ADDITIONALLY, towing is different between the two. The Outback pulls 2700 with the 2.5, Forester pulls 1500 with the 2.5 or 3000 with the wilderness (trans cooler, FD ratio). XT outback can tow 3,500!

"The base model Forester has only four speakers, which kinda makes it sound like it's shouting at your feet." LOL
Having sold both cars for years, and having owned the Forester and Legacy (non-lifted Outback), here is my take on their differences...
The Forester handles better, and feels more lively overall. Full stop. Subaru always say that the Outback drives like a car, compared to most SUVs, and that's true, but it's a really heavy, slow, ponderous car. Very dull. The Forester feels and behaves like a smaller, more agile, energetic vehicle. This is when comparing both with the NA 2.5. Obviously, the Outback's optional turbo changes the equation, at least in terms of acceleration. If you want or need halfway fun acceleration, the Outback turbo is the only way to go.
Cargo-wise, it's fairly simple. Do you value depth, or accessibility? The Outback has a longer cargo space, but the Forester's is taller and wider, making it the better option for Costco runs, furniture shopping, buying a BBQ, etc. If all you're doing is grocery shopping, and height/width don't matter all that much, then the Outback's superior depth is better. The Outback is also better for sleeping in your car.
Comfort is a mixed bag. The Forester is definitely better for ingress and egress. For the elderly, or for people with bad backs, its very tall doors that open so widely make the Forester the best Old People car on the planet, other than maybe some minivans. Just open the door, turn your back to the seat, and skootch back until your butt hits the seat. You're in. With the Outback, its additional height vs a sedan makes it better than the Legacy, but it's still not as easy to get in and out of as the Forester. Seating-wise, it's SUV vs sedan again. Do you like to lean back in more of a prone position, legs forward, or sit up straight and tall, legs more beneath you, and have a commanding view of the road? The Outback reclines more. The Forester places you in a more active driving position, and its ginormous windows offer better outward visibility than the already excellent Outback's. The Forester offers a genuine sitting-in-a-fishbowl feeling, especially when that (semi) panoramic roof is open.
The Outback has newer, faster, "better" infotainment tech, and larger screens, but it's all much less user-friendly than the Forester's traditional switches, buttons, and smaller screens. That being said, the overabundance of buttons and switches on and around the steering wheel is a real nuisance on both vehicles. Subaru needs to simplify their steering wheel controls layout, big-time.
Materials-wise, the Outback wins. It's less plasticky, with more soft touches everywhere, and a cleaner look. Unfortunately, as mentioned above, that cleaner looks comes at the cost of decreased usabiity. Subaru really needs to go to Honda school to learn how to build a clean, functional, user-friendly interior. Toyota and Mazda could also teach Subaru a thing or three there.
Exterior styling? Cardigan-sporting Grandparents, or vape-huffing Outdoorsy Tinder Couple? The Outback is decidedly AARP, while the Forester is pure PNW Tree Hugger. Distinct personalities. Both are rather homely, in that peculiarly endearing Subaru hiking-boot way.
The Outback is quieter on the highway. Not by much, but the difference is there. It's the more serene mile-muncher.
Conversely, the Forester is better off road, and for most daily duties in which smaller/more agile beats larger/more cumbersome. Let your teen daughter borrow the car, and she's much more likely to come back with a dented Outback than with a dented Forester, due to the Forester's greater outward visibility and shorter, boxier shape. It's not just inexperienced, phone-addled teens, either. A lot of distracted soccer moms and elderly people with diminished spacial awareness routinely misjudge the length of the Outback's rear end, and end up paying the price. The Outback's rear bumper and quarter panels are powerful magnets for parking lot light poles.
While both cars use the same crappy CVT and direct injection, the Forester has had a slightly better recent history of reliability. Neither are stellar, but both have improved significantly over the past few years. For one thing, head gaskets are no longer an issue. Unfortunately, excessisve oil consumption and ultra-expensive windshield replacements remain a concern. No longer would I recommend any Subaru, as I would have confidently done in the past, if a buyer is looking for something to go 200,000+ trouble-free miles. Between the CVT simply not lasting that long, and the oil consumption posing serious longevity issues, I just can't do it. Also, there's the additional longterm concerns with the Outback's turbo. Instead, I'd tell them to buy a NA Toyota. I wouldn't even recommend a modern Honda anymore, not with nearly all of them now utilyzing turbos, direct injection, and CVTs.
In the end, I think the choice between the Forester and Outback is fairly easy. You know which one appeals to you, which one suits your tastes better: friendly, utilitarian SUV, or lifted midsize wagon. Turbo options notwithstanding, the rest is just details.

You really marked out the differences so well and the great thing about Subaru is they actually let you build the vehicle you want (at least at my local dealer in CT) to be delivered 6 months later. This is a great video! I’ve owned a ‘19 Forester Sport and traded for a ‘21 Toyota Venza hybrid. I got a lot less fuel economy than the sticker on the Forester and drove a ton for work. I’ve changed jobs now and don’t drive for my job except for the commute between work and home. I want another Subaru and am thinking about the Outback XT. My greatest hesitation on the Outback is that giant tablet infotainment. I like knobs, buttons, and analog gauges. I had enough issues on the Forester infotainment and it was much smaller. Thanks for such a well done comparison.

I was dead set on the Forester, but then I sat in the Outback and knew it was the one to buy. The seats were better contoured and form fitting whereas the Forester felt like a bench seat by comparison. Even before I changed my mind, I thought the Outback was the better looking vehicle. The Forester is kind of flat and boxy whereas the Outback has better sweeping lines and curves. It looks like a sleeper station wagon that has been souped up. As someone who is relatively tall, but also very long-waisted, I have a very tall seating height but have no issue with head clearance in the Outback.

I prefer a wagon's shape to an SUV's, but after driving both the Outback and Forester I ended up buying the Forester (Wilderness). A lot I liked about each but the fact that the Forester was lighter, shorter and had a smaller turning circle were important to me. And that it had no turbo, crazy as that may seem.
For a naturally-aspirated engine though, highway mpg has been pretty dismal in the Wilderness. I've only had it 5 months so I hope it reaches the EPA figure at some point.

    • @AleksPTA
      @AleksPTA Год назад +5

Agree about the turbo. I ordered a 2023 Forester just for that reason, would much rather have a naturally aspirated engine. It has enough power, given the fact that I sometimes find myself in bumper to bumper traffic many evenings having gobs of power is kind of pointless. The Wilderness is geared lower which is going to impact fuel mileage. It also rides a little higher which doesn’t help with fuel mileage. It does look sharp though!

Couldn't justify the $ for the Crosstrek Limited. My only real complaint about the Outback is the front fascia re-design. The 20-22 designed looked much better - can't really complain through.

I love my new Outback, but I don't like the almost ZERO space to put stuff under the giant info screen. There's one tiny pocket that barely fits my wallet and phone. The Forrester has a more reasonably sized screen and therefore, much more room under the dash, and there's another spot for things in front of the console. The size of the 11.5" screen feels pretty necessarily large.

The Forester Wilderness takes the homely and turns it into hideous. But, it appears that the dark grey body color will disguise the overdone cladding fairly well. Yes, it does look goofy (like it needs larger wheels/tires to fill the wheel wells), but I'm interested in buying one.

The outback trunk size is huge and if I needed that much storage space, I might be swayed. I’m on my second forester (2010 was my first and now I have a 2019). Has Subaru fixed the cracking windshields? It is a real issue, considering one has to have that eyesight gizmo recalibrated each time. Ah, the wonders of the modern world. Can they go 60K to 80K without the need to clean the direct injection engine? Will they develop oil burning before 100K miles recorded? The current Outback, aside of the Tupperware, looks great -- nice wagon. The 2025 Forester looks to be a winner. My Fusion has the non-turbo engine, and has not used a drop of oil, now at 80K, with no need to clean out any carbon deposits. I went 8 years on the original battery. Just wondering how the latest and greatest cars compare to those of today? BTW, I am liking the looks of the CrossTrek the most -- kinda sporty and might be best to zip about the town in.

Im debating between the crosstrek or forester 2023 (both premium)! Which would you recommend? Im a young adult looking to purchase his first car. I plan on mostly using my car for daily commutes (moving to a new state and unsure how long the commute is, maybe 20 min). But I am an outdoorsy person who will try to go snowboarding / camping/ hiking as often as I can. Thats why I am looking at subarus. That said, the only "big" differences I see are, price difference of ~$2-3k, much smaller cargo space for crosstrek, better view on forester, the 'smoother' acceleration on the forester at low gear, and in my opinion the crosstrek has a better exterior look, has a better sportier look. With such a small price difference, in terms of spec, forester wins but given that I am a young adult, any reduction is price is very appreciative. Also not sure how small the cargo space on the crosstrek is. I dont have anything planned but I can go on trips solo or with friends. Which would you recommend and any additional insights you can provide? Ive also looked at Rav4, CRV, etc, but the crv is too pricey, and the rav4 feels too cheap at the base model. Subaru seems the best bang for buck at the moment.

    • @kanalune

I’ve had Crosstreks as loaners and prefer the forester much better. I prefer the roomier size and the way the drivers seat is sat higher, however I’m also just used to a bigger car. If you don’t mind the size, the Crosstrek is definitely worth it especially with the price and driving either is fine 😊
Actually sad (and maybe funny) story. I had a 2023 Crosstrek for 6 days. I cheaped out and got the base so it came manual. Found it just wasn’t for me so I traded it in for a 2019 forester (my previous car was also a forester). Had the Crosstrek been bigger and more comfortable for me to drive I would have kept it even though I wasn’t a fan of the manual but I’m just more comfortable in a bigger car. Especially because I live in a city that everyone drives like maniacs in.

    • @kanalune

@@kanalune thanks for the info! Yah I def am more comfortable with the forester size, but that means the transition to crosstrek wont be bad at all. Ive never driven a subaru before, and because of that wary of buying one. The extra space is a definite plus, but Im wondering if its still 'doable' on the crosstrek for any roadtrip, or snowboarding trips. maybe solo or with friends. Or if its not worth the hassle and paying the extra few for the forester. that said, i will be living solo for the most part and still using the car mostly for daily commute in a city (city doesnt get the worst weather). So im wondering if the forester is worth the extra buck. I just wish they made teh forester look nice

    • @kanalune

@@ChrisParkpartybus Subaru is definitely my brand of choice. I’ve had plenty of loaners from them (my old Subaru was in the shop a lot; it was over 200k miles) and I’ve driven almost every model. I’ve enjoyed the handling on them all and if it wasn’t so small I’d actually say the Impreza is my favorite besides the forester. I hate my moms Nissan Rogue and my dad has a Prius. I think you should definitely get the forester if you are going to need the space because I feel it would be uncomfortable to do a road trip in a crosstrek, but again I’m biased because I like a bigger car. I think the only major difference is the space and it’s worth the added money in my opinion. The sunroof option is also a game changer. That is now a must in any car I have 😅
