Layne ignores all the keto research showing higher levels of testosterone. He hates it because he takes gear himself to get high testosterone. He has a obvious bias.
Low carb tends to drive up SHBG, sex hormone binding globulin; this drives down free testosterone; I’m surprised this wasn’t addressed. People on long term low carb/ keto/carnivore diets frequently have normal to high total testosterone but tanked free , useful, testosterone
3:52 - Listen and you'll hear their conclusions. It appears the closer your low carb diet is to Keto, the less and less you'll see your testosterone decrease. Did they compare this with high carb diets?
Appreciate the information and non biased approach to this. I think some of us get introduced to nutritional information through starting a low carb diet or keto diet because it’s so popular. The more I learn about nutrition the more I want to learn. I’ve maintained my goal weight for about 10 months and now I want to add some muscle. At 57 years old my goals are simply to be healthy and not become frail.
If someone is 35% calories from proteins and 35% calories from carbs, he is indeed low fat, which in turn affects testosterone. That said, Paul Saladino cited low testosterone as a reason to reincorporate fruits and honey in his carnivore diet (which resolved the issue). Robert Ciwes points at insuline suppression effects of long term keto diets on testosterone, and advocates a regular intake of some minimal carb to spike insuline once in a while.
@ads94116 30% in terms of total calories consumed (not mass) is indeed low fat. If you do a low carb diet, you should be about 65% calories from fat, 30% from proteins, and 5% from carbs. Again, it's in calories term, not mass.
I been doing keto. Pros, fat loss, I can eat whatever whenever and I’m ripped right now and I don’t feel terrible unlike when I used to cut for the summer when I used to body build. Dr. Layne, first of all, I would like to thank you for your work. By just watching your content on RUclips, I could significantly improve my diet, which indeed used not to be so bad, but it tended toward extremes time and again, either by consuming many calories or by restricting a lot of them. Now I feel more in control and a lot more free, for I can track the calories and, more importantly, the proteins in my diet. I think I was starving for the lack of protein. God bless you.
Great objective vibe you brought! Never seen you and now subbed! I had a bout with low libido a few months ago and want to share my story and thoughts. Been doing low carb, keto sometimes dirty keto for 2.5 years. I also consistently IF basically from 930ish pm(my nightly whey protein shake mixed with a few nuts and about 1/2 cup of breyers low carb ice cream. Gotta have my chocolate fix!) till between 12-3 when I break my fast alternating days with 3 strips of bacon and 4 pasture raised eggs with avacados and the next day a can of sardines, and mixed nuts of cashews, macademia nuts, pistachios, pecans, and walnuts. The evening meal between 6-8 is usually something like salmon, steak, hamburger, pork chops, chicken with cruciferous veggies: broccolli, Cauliflower or asparagus baked in olive oil and spice. I also do some HIIT workouts 2-3x/wk with pushups, pullups, dips, dumbell benches and overhead presses. So my T levels felt great(along with my libido) for awhile on my diet/exercise regiment and then i increased my intensity and increased my fasting length and noticed my libido dropped. I was hell bent on finding out WTF was wrong and found some some threads online of men in similar situations and also saw some research about your SHBG(sex hormone binding globulin) increasing with low carb/IF/intense exercise. I started taking boron and Tongkat(supposed to act as aromatose inhibiter freeing up more T that SHBG won't bind to). I went and had my T tested before taking the tongkat and it tested 790 with freet T of 16. I'm 57. I'm currently stacking 1/2 tspn of argenine and 1/4 tspn tongkat(bulk supplement brand) and my libido is back like a 30 year old and I feel like a million bucks! I continue to tweak my diet/exercise and overall wellness regiment always looking for optimal health but not being a perfectionist. I was a high school health teacher for 30 years(not that it matters...). I have added a few more carbs especially on workout days. The benefits of fasting and lower carbs especially the simple carbs has made a world of difference to me besides just losing fat weight. I have so much more energy, clear headedness, mood stability, much lower inflammation, better skin, no more athlete's foot or toenail fungus. I'll never go back to the SAD diet(standard American Diet) I still have cheat meals of pizza etc and drink some beer here and there, but my body will transition back to ketone burning quick with a good fast/low carb menu the next day. It does take your mitchondria a good 3-4 months to change(I did disagree with your one statement saying that you didn't think it took that long). I tell people who want to change to low carb/keto that you must be super strict for the first 6 months and then, as long as you exercise, that you can cheto on keto! Hope this helps someone.
Hello Charles, I went through the exact scenario too. I was low/zero carb, high fat with some intermittent fasting thrown in, and was feeling amazing (strong, lean). Then I crashed and had symptoms of low t (weak, irritated, lack of libido, brain fog etc) my total T was above average, but free t was in the gutter due to elevated SHBG, I've added more carbs and cut my fasting down, and all symptoms have subsided. Feeling good, I'd say my carbs are moderate now, I'm 44 years old. Thanks Paul
You simply have to choose between two types of energy, either carbohydrates or fats, but if the protein is significantly higher than the carbohydrates and fats, it will raise your cortisol and lower your testosterone levels.
A point to take into consideration is the metabolic type, which Dr William D. Kelley promoted 60 years ago. He saw people as having three ways they preferred to digest their food, and according to which of those three (meat-based, plant-based or mixed) you belonged to, eat accordingly.
Studies leave a lot of wiggle room, because we don’t know the ages of the men, were they training, not training, how was their sleep etc. some people do well on low carbs others don’t, just find what works for you!
As a keto camper and a runner I can tell that after hitting more than 15k three days a week in moderate pace my testosterone crashed, even doing weight lifting my test was really bad, so, I had to tweak from 10% of carbs to 25% Some will say "that's not keto anymore" But after years on a very low carb diet I don't produce any significant amounts of ketones (blood tested) So,,, guess ketosis doesn't matter anymore for me. What I do now: I keep it low carb, lots of fat and meat every day but once a week I eat just whatever I find, honey, fruits, cereal, bread, donuts, 🍩 don't just call it a cheat day, it's a strategy, that's it. Let's face it, no matter how adapted we get to fats,,, high performance demands resources,
This effect is almost identical to Physique competitors where in the peak month(Cutting Phase) studies have shown lower level of testosterone vs initial prep Phase.
Do your own blood work and find out what works for you. Cutting carbs and / or intermittent fasting both crash my T and send SHBG through the roof, even with a moderate protein high animal fat diet.
I am 27, been on a high protein / low carb diet for quite a while. I recently went for blood work to check my test levels. All I can say.. Is my test is low as hell! I was shocked.
For the algorithm, but I also really appreciate the truth and balanced take on things. You tell the truth without attacking low carb because of a minor downside. I'm not a fan of low carb but it's refreshing to not hear "never do this" or "always do this." One of the only channels I can find that with and I almost always come to your channel to see if you go over some studies I hear elsewhere.
That's a lot of saturated fat! I'm really not sure about saturated fats, some says it's fine, others say it's bad and it's better to have more monounsaturated fats and omega 3.
Is the carb content what actually matters? I think its the fat, which I think is where you were headed. I am on a low carb diet because of Type 2 diabetes. No issues with libido or testosterone levels and I eat a lot of protein - I get a decent level of fat too. I didn’t read the meta, but I wonder how many of these studies also included activity levels and types of activity when looking at any hormone level vs diet. Most nutrition research is too short term, under powered, and doesn’t acount for confounding variables to be of value. Eat what works for you and makes you feel good. Just don’t eat more fuel than you need.
Not all fats are the same, monounsaturated fats increase testosterone, polyunsaturated fats decrease testosterone but are a essential fatty acid and must be consumed for optiminal health. Saturated fats are not essential but can be used as fuel and other functions. It is important to try to maintain a 1:1 ratio between omega 3 and omega 6. Any imbalance and inflammation will persist. These studies don't clarify what kind of fats replaced the carbs. The research on fats and keto is ongoing, but the consensus is always that natural foods are the best. So vegetable oils (PUFA) that have been genetically modified to have the same smoke point as olive oil (MUFA) for high heat is likely not good to consume. Natural PUFA's do not have a high smoke point. Why are they being used for deep frying? This over use of vegetable oils in my opinion is causing all kinds of metabolic health problems. The high inflammation along with high insulin, glycotic end products is a recipe for diabetes, heart attacks, etc.

Most low-carb diets restrict calorie intake and don't eat enough fat, which of course will lead to lower testosterone because long-term low calories destroy testosterone.
Keto/Carnivore people say that insulin reduces free testosterone. Carb people say that keto/carnivore raises shbg which binds free testosterone and makes it unusable. I'm so fckn tired of this confusing bs.

I believe HF diets have been shown to spare testosterone, whereas LF diets have been known to lower testosterone and/or have other negative effects (if dropped too low), I.e. low libido, low mood, depression, malabsorption of fat-soluble vitamins.

I saw some evidence suggesting this yrs ago, i actually think i commented this before on your channel some yrs ago to, that the supposed benefits of high protein could actually be undone by the lowering it causes to testosterone levels. It really doesnt seem like a natural diet and its not enjoyable at all! It got my interest because i experienced a huge drop in testosterone through the yrs after doing high protein diets, i also had other issues to so its hard to pin point, but my problems didnt start until i took on the bodybuilding lifestyle.
Love it Layne quality channel. What’s your view on weighed vests during cutting apparently some evidence shows the added weight on the bones tricks the brain into maintaining NEAT and obviously keeps energy expenditure higher
My analysis of this is complete bro science but maybe high protein low carb diets elicit gluconeogenesis and high iron intake which as a result also increases SHBG?
I did a low carb diet in the early 90's for 4 months and lost strength left and right. Then did low carb again in 1998 - 1999 for 14 months , and lost weight, but body composition was terrible. I calculated 1/3 of the weight loss was from muscle, and 5% of the weight loss was water weight.
Were these studies controlled for amount of exercise? If not, that may be a clue to why high protein causes testosterone crashing (stress from exercising while at a carb deficit).
LCD’s aren’t the best and cause unnecessary stress on the body to include lowering hormones, muscle loss and slows the metabolism. The majority of people that do LCD’s most always go back to eating carbs because they aren’t inherently unhealthy-aside from short term use for some medical conditions. The cell runs on sugar, and fat is our body’s backup system and using fat as our main fuel actually increases fat oxidation and is the main cause of insulin resistance in cells, especially polyunsaturated versions. Yes LCD’s are better than the standard American diet but isn’t the long term better approach IMO. Love your videos!!
When I went low carb….my muscles depleted and at one point, my sugar was crashing in to the 40’s-50’s on the glucometer. I started getting heart palpitations. My body was finding it very hard to adjust to a low carb diet. Now I try and keep my carbs below 200 grams per day and that seems to be a happy medium for retaining muscle mass.
I’m on a caloric deficit, lost a good amount of weight. My DHEA levels were slightly elevated and testosterone was a bit lower than normal. My Dr. said it’s likely my body was compensating my lower testosterone.

Anyone in the know would be doing an actual (
Low fat causes low test. High fat with high carbs = fat stored. I really like the diet of Frank Zane, who was doing 1:1:1 macros (calories wise).
Another excellent video! You seem to be very good at educating and definitely have helped me with great info! Thanks
For the algorithm, thanks from Portugal 💪🇵🇹
I love the motivacional Layne! 💪🏻❤️
You mentioned HF diets have been shown to affect testosterone compared to LF diets. In what way?
I believe HF diets have been shown to spare testosterone, whereas LF diets have been known to lower testosterone and/or have other negative effects (if dropped too low), I.e. low libido, low mood, depression, malabsorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
Thanks I need to get more info on this. Hey recently developed type 1 diabetes and so have Stop eating sugar and eat as few carbs as I can to try to manage it with diet for as long as I can. But I've noticed a significant reduction in libido I wonder if it has something to do with affecting the testosterone or cortisol levels
On low carb/keto my SHBG was double the high end of the range 120nmol/dL crushing my free test.
I’m currently doing keto and I need to get my blood work done for this very reason (shbg). Although I’m not symptomatic of any low t high e symptoms, I’m still curious what my levels are
@@GuacIsExtra99 did your SHBG and free test get impacted in the same way?
@@SBavailablehandle haven’t done blood work yet but I’ll update her when I do, I honestly don’t feel any symptoms like low energy or libido but I should still get tested
@@GuacIsExtra99 I was right around 20g of carbs a day when I had the issue. I speculate that if I went up to 100g or so of carbs a day I would've been able to resolve the issue and remain in ketosis but I am glad I gave it a shot and learned what I did.
Did you recover from that?
I heard nothing but "should', "could", "probably", "might".
I did the carnivore diet for 3 months and it ruined my hormones. SHGB went through the roof and my testosterone took a massive hit.
@@olivertrumanjr9556 did you recover? I went carnivore for a couple.of months and it ruined my hormones, I'm currently back on a balanced diet, taking some herbs to balance hormones, hopefully I improve.
whats with high fat, medium protein, low carb?
Dude you’re one of the best in this field. Mad respect
Carnivore lowered my testosterone level on paper but my body composition and ding ding are doing well so? Lower number but better performance?
For the algorithm- I appreciate the calling out BS vids but really love these educational videos.
Can someone write in the comment what's the final word? Are carbs good or bad for T? I don't have time to watch the entire 13 min.
Nope, gotta watch it
I noticed that my SHBG levels spiked when I do keto and low carb. Although I'm lean and look great, this higher SHBG seems to bind my free Test so I'm supplementing with 12mg/day Boron with so/so results. Lane, what else can be done to loosen free-T from SHBG besides stop doing keo?
Any research on diets and skin? Is there a diet that is more beneficial to skin health, acne, skin vibrancy, etc.
Thank you Lane for all the work and value!
Sounds to me like the defining factor is really the fat intake.
I stopped eating carbs, after about a year and a half, my testosterone went from 219 to 505.
Carbs reduce testosterone
Love it Layne quality channel. What’s your view on weighed vests during cutting apparently some evidence shows the added weight on the bones tricks the brain into maintaining NEAT and obviously keeps energy expenditure higher
Nice work Layne.
Great work.... Layne is the best.
Always valuable! 👍🏻 Thank You 🙏🏻
My analysis of this is complete bro science but maybe high protein low carb diets elicit gluconeogenesis and high iron intake which as a result also increases SHBG?
Shawn Baker has left the chat
Very informative & pertinent to my personal goals thanks Layne 👍
Can somebody link the study pls?
I’m commenting because Layne said I had to
🔥 as always! Thx Doc 👍🏿
I did a low carb diet in the early 90's for 4 months and lost strength left and right. Then did low carb again in 1998 - 1999 for 14 months , and lost weight, but body composition was terrible. I calculated 1/3 of the weight loss was from muscle, and 5% of the weight loss was water weight.
i can't wait for your research review layne!!
Great information, as always!
Thank you for your knowledge 💪🏽
For the algo. Thanks for these awesome educational videos as always Layne!
Were these studies controlled for amount of exercise?
If not, that may be a clue to why high protein causes testosterone crashing (stress from exercising while at a carb deficit).
Very interesting! Did they study long term testosterone? Yes but small sample. Low carb high protein can decrease T long term which is bad.
I wonder about how this works in women. Would it theoretically be the same? I’m new to the whole chemical/hormone/androgen health and fitness world
This is great info and as always, explained so well!
Commenting because it helps, and I like ya man.
TRT and keto. Without either one, I feel like shit.
With both, I feel and look superhuman.
Layne you are just great to listen to, making things easy for me. Thanks mate
Great video. Very unbiased👏👏👏
For that alg tho! (keep doin what you do Layne, also, love the Carbon app!)
Any research out there on TRT and insulin resistance?
dont take it XD
I should clarify: I am insulin resistant and wondering if TRT would benefit that at all.
Hey Layne, long time listener first time caller. Love your preworky and recovery!
How much fiber should I eat on a daily basis?
None, you don’t need it
None, you don’t need it
For the algorithm! Btw thanks again for giving me the literal shirt off your back at the Arnold!
Does this include the keto diet? (Extremely low carb)
comments on keto diets and association with high SHBG?
Good information!! I want my testosterone!
150-200 for me,if i go to low (50) I feel slughish
the sluggishness was likely due to dehydration. You got to up your electrolytes a lot especially in the first few months of transitioning to keto.
Sounds like you were doing keto wrong
@@clevername333agreed
I’m on a caloric deficit, lost a good amount of weight. My DHEA levels were slightly elevated and testosterone was a bit lower than normal. My Dr. said it’s likely my body was compensating my lower testosterone.
I hate the algorithm, but you provide good info so.....
