  • Modifying a Old Hickory 7 inch Butcher Knife into a drop point Buchcraft/Hunter Style knife. Blade length is about 4 in. overall length is about 8.5 in. I trimmed and re-profiled the blade and modified the tang for a more ergonomic handle. For the handle I did a coke bottle style shape with a slight palm swell. It is way more comfortable than the original. I used wider scales made of cherry and contrasting maple. I wanted to reuse the original scales but one side cracked while removing them. The pins are brass 10-24 machine screws. The edge is a convex grind as the thinness of the blade makes grinding a scandi edge more difficult. I purchased the Harbor Freight 1x30 belt grinder and this is my first project using it and it worked well. I will be making a sheath for this knife in the future

    I broke a scale while modifying an old hickory knife too. I must say that your handle came out looking much better than mine did. Great job!

    Very good video, great music and well produced. Very few people realize just how useful an old hickory can be and you did an excellent job of modifying it with great attention to detail.

    I bought the same Old Hickory and turned it into a Kephart style. I let my SIL cut some meat with it today. He was shocked at how sharp it was.

    Just modded mine. Shaped it like a Kellam Tracker and ground the handle more barrel. Great knife. Added a d ring and belt loop to the stock sheath. You did a great job.

      It's actually possible to do this kind of project with very limited tools. Check out some other videos on the topic and you will see that all of this equipment is making the job easier and quicker, but is not needed at all :)

      There’s a gazillion of them out there, and old hickory didn’t make what he wanted. This man skill made something useful to him.

    You did great work…but it is a sin to modify an old hickory blade! Could have cut that pattern out of a circular saw blade and done the same project…not destroy a perfectly designed knife blade to do it!

    • @redrustyhill2
      @redrustyhill2 7 месяцев назад

      Perfectly designed? I have that exact knife that was my dads, its older than me and i am 45. I have never used it because its a design i dont have a use for. I use scimitar style blade for butchering so this just sits in my knife bag.

    I don't understand all of the hoopla over these knives? They are ugly, utilitarian inexpensive kitchen knives without much appeal even in the kitchen. The handles are the ugliest thing about the knife too. Why waste your time doing this modification, unless it is to practice your knife making skills.

  • @johnclark1612

    Mine is a 5 3/8 inch blade old hickory,I guess it's original. Hate to see you ruin a perfect knife but it's yours. If you were to roll around mine in your hand like that you might loose a finger.
