I don't think the elephants are "afraid" of the mice, but are actually aware of the difference in size and are being cautious not to step on the tiny creatures. So, while it looks like they are moving away in fear, they are actually moving away from the mice as a matter of caution. You might say they are "afraid" of stepping on the mice!
Haha actually, elephants afraid to a mice because it can crawl on their skin or trunk. Elephants had no epiglotis and they're afraid being soffocated by a mouse
Damn guys, if you're doing this for school, you'll never truly understand how groundbreaking this show really was. If you have the time, go back, watch some random episodes if you have the interest, it's sincerely one of my favorite science shows from my childhood
Well I'm here for school.. And elephants have been known to be very gentle creatures. They react to humans like humans react to puppies. They think we're cute. I don't think the elephant was scared of the mouse, I think the elephant backed away because the mouse came out of nowhere. Basically, I think the elephant wasn't scared of the mouse itself, it was scared it'd hurt the mouse.
This is a myth, elephants do not think humans are cute nor do they really care to that extent for smaller animals. Of course they do express empathy and can develop friendly relationships with other animals. Just as some of us humans fear mice, spiders, and other small crawlers despite them being a fraction of our weight, size and strength, so do some elephants, this is a natural fear or phobia of certain things. Some elephants fear mice, some elephants do not, ultimately depends on the personality of the animal.
That… isn’t true. Yes, some elephants are gentle, but they can be brutal bastards if they want to. Also they are afraid of mice because mice (or rats more likely) have a tendency to crawl up their trunks, thinking it’s a place they can hide. It’s very uncomfortable for the elephant.
Tough to determine if the mouse squeak was real (i.e., actually delivered by the mouse during the data collection such that the elephant heard it.) or not (a video sound overlay for dramatic purposes). Notice that the mouse squeak was only audible when the mouse was present. Not with the dung-only trials. If this was the case, then deliver the mouse squeak (recorded from a real mouse) with and without the dung. Or, mimic it with an A.I. app. IV = presence or absence of the dung, the mouse, and the mouse squeak DV = elephant's response after exposure to each of the IVs individually and in combination (ANY change in movement by the elephant, for how long, revisit-investigate the site, etc. ) Just say'n
Adam: "it'd be like comparing a human and I fly, I can't think of a reason an elephant would be afraid of a mouse" *Humans that are afraid of flies, spiders, and.. mice*: "Are we a joke to you?!"
Flies and mice can carry diseases, spiders can kill you. Phobias are why they don’t and not all humans are afraid of them. Are all elephants afraid of mice? Cartoons I love them lmao
There are so many people saying that they could've tested something else or they made the conclusion too soon. 1) This is not the full episode nor does it belong to this channel, 2) It's mostly fake , 3) the two men in the video (Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman) are 53 and 64 years old rn so this episode is from at least 10 years ago, they've probably learned by now 4) This was made [with the intention of making it easy for the audience to understand and to be entertaining Also good luck with school :)
It's plausible, but the experiment is incomplete because we cannot rule out that the elephants only act this way around mice and not other creatures of similar size. A complete experiment will tell us whether they are likely being cautious not to hurt tiny animals or if they are specifically stressed about mice.
Was it that the elephant didn’t want to step on the small animal? It looked like it could have been more cautious then afraid. Or ‘afraid’ of hurting the mouse then of the mouse hurting it.
So shallow. The elephant is not afraid of the mouse.. It just doesn't want injure It! So the elephant eliminates the possibility of stepping on the mouse by steering complete clear of the little one! Stop under estimating the innate compassion of natures creatures!
Well, wouldn't say I am a nerd, presay, but I do live anything with the Mythbusters. "I reject your reality, and substitute my own." "Don't try this at home, we're what you might call experts."
Anyone here because it was on the "How to Prepare for Unit 1 Exam Retake" handout for test retakes? Though I must say that I am curious about exactly HOW long they waited for the elephants to deiced to walk by that spot??????? (if you are seeing this comment 1 - 4 years since I commented it then hello newbie underclassmen and good luck from your upperclasswoman.)
When this aired, I wasn't surprised when the elephant reacted because I figured animals are sensitive to movement and the dung moved. I was really surprised when it didn't care about the dung alone. My guess is that since elephants can't see details as well as primates (I'm not sure how anyone actually tested that, did they ask an elephant if they could see the letter "e"?), they really don't like small animals.
Well the King Cobra does live in Africa, it's possible it's scared of Snakes or other Venomous small animals.. and if it can't make out exactly what that small animal is.. that it's just being cautious to avoid a deadly bite.
So what exactly is plausible here? If your point was to prove that elephants are afraid of mice, I don’t think that you did kit very convincingly. The mouse got the elephant’s attention but it wasn’t frightened, but most likely curious. So what did you prove as plausible?By the way, I enjoy your shows very much. I’m giving this one a like button.
I don't think it's even that surprising. We humans get jumpy when we see a mouse or a spider etc even though we know it's not a threat to us. I've also seen videos of monkeys acting grossed out exactly like humans when they see a rat.
OKAY ..... How about this test wont work. Who's to say the elephant is moving through fear or moving to avoid killing the mouse. The elephant is respectful of life, they have been known to mourn their dead.
Experiment needs more data you have to do this with a brown mouse no elephants going to see a white lab mouse in the middle of the Sahara or Serengeti normally Right? so more data needed

That's what I think too. I don't think they had a good result for this experiment.
