Thanks David, after watching this video I decided to drop my mobile hotspot yesterday. Turns out AT&T misquoted how much they would be charging me a month for adding this on and they were overcharging me $10 a month for the last year. Needless to say I am no longer with AT&T and glad to be back on Verizon.
David, if you are on one of the modern shared data plans hotspot functionality is included in the plan for birth Verizon and AT&T. Also that expensive hotspot only costs $10 to add to that plan if you need the separate device. It sounds like your client was on a really old legacy plan.
This is good information. It wouldn't work for a household with more than one person using computers. In your example the guy completely ditched his internet provider. What if the owner of the iPhone is not home, then the other person has no way to connect. People need to be aware of this potential downfall as well.
Thanks soooooo much Dave this was fantastic! I have an iPhone that is grandfathered with the old at&t unlimited data plan and if set up a personal hotspot I will lose my unlimited data plan. It's a shame because it would be great if they would let me use my phone for a hotspot but they want to make more than the billions of dollars they already have. However thank you so much for all of your help your classes and website are phenomenal!!!!!
Here in Australia we don't have to call up to have the hotspot data turned on on our cellphone networks here in Australia. We just have to turn it on in the setting on the iPhone or iPad or a android phone.
David, I have hotspot/tethering - unlimited data on my iPhone for 2 months now after cancelling my tv-internet. My problem is; I’m not able to 1. connect my smart tv to the internet (like it’s not a strong enough signal) and 2. when opening my apps to stream movies they always stall- start - stall and start. It’s very frustrating. What do you suggest??
Most plans I know of will change you extra for hotspot data. Some plans you need to sign up for the hotspot data option. While most carrier have an unlimited data plan on your phone.
eddienetptown? I got the Ptown part but who's Eddie and does he have a couch (for day/two) to spare for the festival in June? Few years ago it was SULU as the grand marshal. Always wanted to see the parade. *Spectator not participant.
Based on this information i would assume any data used on the computer downloaded via hotspot would count against the phones data plan? Or do you get a separate usage when you pay the additional fee?
Can anybody help me I can't I turn off the screen overlay, I have a tab a tablet Samsung I have tried many times to fix this problem but it didn't work I have watched RUclips videos and I still don't get it I do what they say do but I just can't turn it off I would like to add third-party apps on my tablet & android phone please help
Here in Australia it's very expensive to use the cellphone network for the internet from a cellphone. AU$50.00 gives me 8GB of data for a LTE WIFI modem each month and AU$35 gives me 4G of data on a iPad each month here in Australia
Steve Kays Smartphones consist of a plan that I call the trifecta (mins, texts, data). The data is your portable connection to the internet via your carrier (ATT, Verizon, Tmo, Sprint etc..) Hotspotting is the ability to allow other devices to latch onto your phones "internet capability". Think of your phone as a ferryboat with a big diesel engine (engine power is the internet). For a guy in a rowboat, he'd like to toss you a rope and enjoy some of that propulsion power. He has to ask you. Then he throws you the rope and you tie him on. That's the username/password situation. You have to know the captain or ships name (signal name) and get permission (password) or no one will catch you rope. Your tablet is a sailboat. But there's no wind today. (Wind = WiFi). Most days you get by with wind power... but not today. You're in the ocean and it's dead calm. You see the ferry? You have to get him to pull you or you're going nowhere. Get their attention (find out the signal name) and get authorization (password) then throw your ropes and enjoy the ride. Data is fuel. If the ferry is running low, they might deny you a tow. You'll slow the ferry down and they might not make it to port. Then hope for SEA-TOW (a WiFi signal from a coffee shop or business or a house with unlocked WiFi) Was I helpful? Amy Davidson is a redhead hottie.
the iPhone mobile hotspot, reduces dramatically the battery of your phone. (Max usage of hotspot is 2 hours) image if you are travelling and you cannot charge your phone. In addition your phone is working as a router so it gets super hot, as a result your battery efficiency is heavily damaged over time.
Hi Dave Love your videos. My AT&T old unlimited account does not allow for hot spots. Was hopeing the new iPhone 6 / ios8 had a way around that. however I do have a Virgin Mobile Hot Spot that you can pay month by month. I only need when I travel and find that helpful that there is no contract and can pay as you go month by month.
Thanks for another great video David! Another option is to get a 3G tethering router, such as these - www.edimax.co.uk/edimax/merchandise/merchandise_list/data/edimax/uk/3g_routers/ I have a 3G-6218n and iPhone 4 with unlimited data plan. I get about 6.5 Mbs on a good day. When they roll out 4G here I will probably get a new iPhone 6 and use that on 4G. Even on 3G I'm using minimum 25GB per month of data. I have over 20 devices on my LAN. It's probably not an option for online gaming or households with multiple internet users (as someone pointed out below), but video streaming at 720p is usually ok.
I wish we had unlimited data on a plan here in Australia on our cellphone plans. That would be a dream for all Aussies here in Australia. We can get unlimited voice calls each month for AU$130
Sean Zappulla They are stopping the unlimited tethering option, though they are still doing unlimited data for the phone. It was inevitable, as 4G was killing their network. Last month I pulled 125GB through my phone! The phone plan costs £23 a month. I think generally the UK is a rip off, but mobile phones plans do seem to be cheaper here, maybe only Finland is cheaper. Probably because the market is totally deregulated, and the country is small and over populated making it viable for multiple Telco's to operate in the same area.
That doesn't happen here in Australia. The highest data we can get on a mobile network is 25GB but thats over AU100 a month most people here have cable or ADSL or fibre. fibre has just started getting installed under the ground but very few places have it but all business have ADSL connected around Australia. I'm on cable with 100GB in one house another house i have got 250 GB on cable. I'm the only one out all of my friends that has cable internet. ADSL is a pain in the neck when watching videos online.
Here in Australia our cellphone plans at AU$130 with unlimited voice calls to anywhere in Australia to a landline or cellphone but the data is 3GB each month on a 24 month contract and on my network Telstra iPhones come unlocked on the plan and that came useful when i went to New Zealand earlier in the year. Phones come unlocked on Contracts or outright. anyone can buy an iPhone at an Apple store without a contract and unlocked. So if you come to Australia and you want an unlocked iPhone go and buy one at Apple Store and claim it duty-free at the airport and keep the receipt and they put the GST back on your credit card at the airport once you go through customs. A lot of tourists buy iPhone's this way.
+Terrell Johnson right. But he was using Verizon as an example in the video. If your phone has HD Calling (Verizon's name for Voice Over LTE) this is no longer a problem
SammySaysSo Data and Voice should be two separate functions and not linked to disrupt either. Your carrier must be crappier then Ishtar. Was I helpful? Let my parole officer know.

i dont want to pay for hot spot 10gb cost 70 dollars id blow through that in three days im looking for a device that will allow me to put my sim card in and convert to wifi so i can take any where i want and use my laptop.

Uh, I used both my Xpiria and Moto(3 of them) with no ill effects since '07, just kept them plugged in, with no battery issues. They were/are my main internet(why pay for cable/dsl when I am located within 100' of the tower), but today I USB tether, too much local interference from wifi's nearby.

I have an Amazon Firestick but the only internet I have is 15gb hotspot on my Android phone. Can I still use the Firestick?
Thanks David. Now I will be using the hotspot as suggested by you. Thanks once again
When you watch this video in 2020 in iPhone 11 🤣🤣

You can also use USB antenna's for your phone s ok the your hotspot has a better range
PC Classes Online Rocks!! Thanks for this video!
the only issue with this is you cannot use the phone and you can only connect one device at a time
As I stated above Verizon has overcome this issue if you have HD Calling enabled.
well thought out
Finally. Something that makes sense. I'm looking for some help for setting up my wife in the motorhome.

Let her live in the house during the winter at least. :)

+Jacinto Montelongo lol turn on your personal data and turn on hotspot in the settings.
Thank you! I had no idea :)
No unlimited data with VW so keep in mind you are sharing data from plan when you use this method.
what if you want to use your laptop instead of your phone?

Get att data connect pass!
Antonio APC79 I got that hotspot doesn't turn on
VZW gives you a hotspot for free if u have a more everything plan with 10GB of data.
Cell phone hotspots are great for occasional usage but if you plan on using a lot then you will kill your battery.
