- For almost 20 years now, the company that we all know for their jellies has been expanding and changing their business to a point where they're now primarily a pet food company. This video talks about the transition.

Smuckers: hold my uncrustable
This is a good comment
Don't give them ideas!

I’ve never eaten one of those. Are they at ALL better than crumbly peanut-butter, fruitish goo, and stale bread?
Wouldn’t this be “bigger than you know”
AxxL shut up
Kind of both at the same time.

I agree
This should have been “Smuckers: Bigger Than You Know”
Edit: Maybe even a crossover between Switching Industries and Bigger Than Your Know
I agree 👍
“Smuckers: Changing Flavors”
Agreed. Far bigger than we knew.
I was just thinking that
Smuckers: Switcher Than You Industry
I actually always assumed Smucker's was part of a larger conglomerate, kind of like SC Johnson.
S.C. Johnson isn't a conglomerate. Established in 1886, their CEO Herbert Fisk Johnson III is the 5th generation to run the company, hence their slogan "a family company". It did bring in plastic products when it acquired DowBrands, a new product area for them. But they own the product lines bought from other companies, unlike conglomerates which are parent companies owning controlling stakes in diversified smaller companies operating independently. Smucker's itself is a conglomerate.
@@dk50b my mistake, and thank you for the correction. Not really the point of my comment though.
Like Kraft Heinz then if SC Johnson doesn't count
@againnuendo that tracks, given that most folks who know me would describe me as arrogant and cocky. Doesn't mean I can't acknowledge a gaffe and thank someone for the correction while still being arrogant and cocky.
@@dk50b Just being owned buy a single family doesn't prevent the company from being a conglomerate.
I'm not certain of the legal definition (if, indeed, there even is one for "conglomerate"), but it is usually something like many different or largely unrelated things combined under a single whole, but remaining as separate entities or brands. So, yes, SC Johnson _and_ Smucker's would be conglomerates by that metric.
I always assumed "smuckers" is the sound you make when you smack your lips and they stick together and make that popping sound because they're sticky with jelly.
I personally thought it rhymed with another word that's NSFW. I've never heard of Smucker's as I'm from the UK and you guys probably haven't heard of Robinson's Golden Shred.
@@davidparsons97 Smuck... or Smack... but your lips would never sound like Smuckers. 232 likes from total idiots!
No, it’s just because you have bad manners and smack your lips really loud. Gross.
I've actually never heard their slogan before somehow. I do like it, though. I think the name unintentionally invokes the sound of smacking on food or something like that. Actually, the word "Smuckers" invokes a sort of puckering face you might make when eating something yummy, hard to describe.
Yeah, it just sounds like a tasty product
i always thought it was because it sounds like fuckers
@@hakdov6496 😂😂😂
Those dirty mothersmuckers...
My family pronounces it as "Schmucker's." Very embarrassing.
@@hakdov6496 That cracked me up.
Gotta say, you really got me with one of their properties, I really didn't see that one coming. Sorry for the previous spoilers, and the late edit.
LoL I laughed when he said they bought Rachel Ray's pet food. Hahaha 😅😅
I remember when I found out that the supermarket version of Dunkin Donut's coffee is produced by Smucker's...
Well now I did damn you cause your comment was the one shown without you having to click lol
Or Clorox owns Hidden Valley.
And Burt's Bees
The craziest part of all this is that it happened when I alive. Smucker's is one of those brands that are ancient history, going back a whole century before I was born. And all of a sudden you're telling me that, after I was born, Smucker's went from a pure jelly company to Jif's peanut butter, Crisco, Pillsbury, Folgers, and pet food.
Yea, I knew they were big but not this big lol
Clearly they got ambitious in a big way.It blows my mind how these companys own so many different brands and products.
Mostly former Procter and Gamble brands. Smuckers tried to buy Wesson when ConAgra put that brand up for sale, but the FTC said no, claiming that Smuckers would have had an effective monopoly on food oils.
Yes, hard to believe that immigrants from Switzerland, seeking religious freedom, actually succeeded by making jelly.
Yes, a family of Mennonites, faith-based and ethical can build and run a business.
As a member of the family, I am very proud of our success. We have many beneficiaries and charities.
The lack of knowledge about us it truly sad. Do more research and you just might find the truth.
Oh cool, just got the Meow Mix song out of my head after three years, so thanks for that
Just like a commercial where a dog said: "Great! Now that song's gonna be stuck in my head all day!".

How did you type THAT and be first?
Back when i did some electrical work, there was a smuckers factory that out company had contracts with. It basically got branded as the place you DONT want to go because they do such excessive overtime
Smucker’s is like Ralston Purina, a company that made pet food and breakfast food for people!
Because pet food is made from left over human food. That's why there's no mouse flavored cat food or turd flavored dog food.
@@RazoE I just find it weird that dog food and cat food are made from human food, when it’s not good for most pets.
Most of it isn't all that good for humans either.
@@Seriousasaninfarc Ralston Purina wasn’t even that good at making human food, no wonder they got bought out by Nestle.
Hey Frank why does this batch of Chex and this batch of Cookie Crisp look and taste like Cat Chow and Puppy Chow respectively? Shit Andre I think the lines got crossed again. Better get the trucks to come back, don't want another lawsuit on our hands. Shit mang Fred, stuff's not half bad. Yeah Andre guess it could taste worse.
The 1st Company Man video of the New Year- & a good one too!
Really appreciate it. Happy new year!
@@companyman114 would it be possible to get the name of the background music? I used to listen to all your videos when I was working overnight during covid and it’s such a relaxing track! Thanks in advance!!!
Im just waiting for them to enter the semiconductor industry now
"With a name like Smucker's, it has to conduct electricity well!"
Wow! This should have been a bigger than you know thing. This is crazy!
I love their strawberry jam, somehow though, it tastes better when it comes from those tiny square packets you get from IHOP or Denny's.
I had no idea! This is insane considering a lot of these brands have been in my house throughout the years.
I knew about everything except the pet food. There is a reason I never by my Dunkin’ Donuts coffee in the store because it’s not the same coffee 😂😂.
"They were out of KY Jelly, so I got Smuckers instead."
I spent a decade. A DECADE trying to get meow mix sound out of my head. I just finally did it last month. So, thanks.
Bruh u feel ur pain as a falcons fan i keep on seeing 28-3
“Meow Mix; you remember that song...”
*Meow meow meow meow
Meow meow meow meow*
“That’s just part of it.”
No, Company Man, that’s the whole thing.
"I know you can read MY thoughts, boy."
I feel like procter & gamble is in every video
They're a huge conglomerate with a crazy portfolio of different brands across multiple product categories, so it's not too surprising.
Back when Letterman was actually funny, I remember he did one of those spoof product promos with "Smuckers, now with extra Smuck." Why does such useless information stay in my head, but I can't remember where I put my keys?
"To be clear. I don't personally endorse this product."
It's Peanut Butter and Jam mixed together
Right! Lol. That was a bit unnecessary.
I don't understand what you mean Michael.
@@companyman114 It's literally just peanut butter and jam in the same jar and you acted as though it wasn't something "above board"
I'm just not a fan of it personally. I believe peanut butter and jelly should be kept separate until applied to the sandwich. Didn't want anyone out there getting the wrong impression.
@@companyman114 it was the phrasing. You made it sound like some sort of social issue. Normally you say you’re not a fan of something. Pretty much saying that you downright do not condone the act of peanut butter and jelly in one jar was a little bizarre, albeit kinda funny tho since you feel so strongly about it lol
I just found out Smuckers owns Adam’s Peanut Butter, which is my favorite brand of PB.
I JUST FOUND OUT I WAS BUYING LIES- DUNKIN DONUTS COFEE
Can you make a video about the first years of Amazon? Like "Amazon when it was a startup".
This would be a very interesting series of videos talking about big companies when they were just starting up
Remember when they were basically a book company? Back in the day I’d buy new and used textbooks from Amazon because they were way cheaper than college bookstores.
Wow planet biz really got alt accs to day his channel is lit
There's probably a Simon Whistler/Business Blaze episode on them.
I thought he did?
Well done! Love the format, these videos are so awesome!
Damn man. This is why i like watching you. Learning about businesses like this is crazy
I really enjoy your content. You mine the tedious spreadsheets and statistics and deliver cogent and entertaining narrative. It's so impressive, I watch episodes on companies I objectively don't care about, but end up fascinated.
I’ve got so many Smuckers products! Cat Food, Coffee, Jam and Peanut Butter. I’m part of the 90%
Happy to see another video from Company Man! I'd love to see you compare Dunkin' Donuts and Starbucks.
First one you've highlighted that apparently has been able to manage their debt. Too many get on the acquisition train only for it to derail the company.
Smucker’s and Folgers are combining. Either they’ll be Smolgers or they’ll be... they’re gonna be Smolgers
The brand will be Folcker's, with Ben Stiller doing commercials. 😂
it could be a wise financial decision to change my last name to smackers and sell smack. 💡
Blake Xu Smackers. Has a nice ring to it!
@andreiiliescu1 Oh, the DIg'em frog from honey smacks.
@andreiiliescu1 I don't know why companies do it, but sometimes they relabel things thinking it won't appeal to a market otherwise. Like Where's Wally/Waldo, or Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone/Sorcerer's Stone.
@Don Clark there was definitely a typo at the registry. It was supposed to be SHMuckers & not SMuckers. Fing bureaucrats.
I liked the alternate slogan: "SMUCKERS! It's good, damn it!"
This Feels more like a bigger than you know episode rather than a switched industries episode
As a child we were a Welch's house. Remember trying Goober, and thought it was bad. Jif is a good normal grocery store peanut butter (didn't know smuckers owned it) with fewer ingredients than Skippy. The only jelly from a normal grocery store I keep in the house now is Bonne Marie. Good stuff, and I recommend the four fruits flavor. You can find a big jar of it at Sam's Club.
Dude I just wanna say I love your videos! You're super informative and you have a great voice!
the company manufactured some amazing treats, great to learn about their business framework.

I own a product from half the brands they own. I didn't even realize.
I feel like you should have a tier list of the companies that are "bigger than you know."
Maybe one day. Have to cover more of them first.
It’s true that Smucker’s owns lots of pet brands. I work at a dog treat factory, and the biggest brand of dog treats we make is owned by Smucker’s. Smucker’s is essentially our biggest customer. We make it more than our own brand of products.
Wow I had no idea how big they were, great video man I love your work! Can't wait for the next vid! (:

This was an entertaining, informative video. Thanks.

This video made me crave peanut butter and jelly so I opened my fridge and my jelly was made by smuckers!
They out here slaying 🤑
This should have been in your “bigger than you know” series because Jesus this is way more than I imagined.
I always thought the slogan was a play on how “smucker” sounds like a word someone would use to describe licking their lips because something tasted good. It’s close to smiled, smacked, and pucker, which are all “mouth verbs”. Like if you were reading a book and there was a sentence like “she smuckered her lips after eating the tasty jam” you probably wouldn’t blink
Can you do a video on Family Video? They recently announced that they were closing their remaining stores to focus on online sales.
I was like, wait why didn't I see this on my break and then realized that it came out after break when I was in my math period.
You watch RUclips videos at school? I'm glad we didn't have all this back in school or I would've never gotten any work done!
Small detail to add from a recruitment fair they were in: they shifted production away from crunchy to creamy peanut butter when COVID-19 hit for a while.
Got to ask... why?
I just tried apple butter for the first time after this video. It’s amazing I can’t believe I took this long.
Do a video on Warner Bros. I've seen the logo million times but I don't know much about it

I knew most of this because my family is from Orriville Ohio where Smuckers is based. It was fun visiting there in the summer when they would make jelly the place would smell so sweet. When my parents moved out we found an old jar of Goobers in the back of the pantry and it turned into a contest of me and my brother daring each other to eat some of it. Mom took it from us, called us morons and threw it away.
Moral of the story: America is owned by a jelly company
