- Hello everyone. So this may be a bit of a niche video, but I really wanted to do an update on what it's like having hearing aids - one year on. I get a lot of comments and requests for an updated video, from fellow hearing loss sufferers, so I hope this is useful! I also include a few tips at the end for people without hearing loss, and how they can support someone who has hearing aids. Q: How old are you?
A: I am now 30 years-old! Argh!
Q: Tell us about your family?
A: I have a son called, Bill, and I am no longer with his dad, as we split mutually when he was a baby. I never imagined my life as it is now, with children to different partners, but I am so happy it is my life. I met Mark in the summer of 2013, and we became firm friends. We fell in love when I became single and we’ve never looked back. We have a daughter, called Daisy, born April 2016, and I’m due our third baby - a boy - in March 2018!
Q: What is your job?
A: I am a trained journalist and former business magazine editor, I then moved into content creation at an agency in Manchester (where I met Mark!) and since Daisy was born, I am now a full-time RUclipsr. Yes, it sounds weird to me too! I work around the kids and try my best to make it work!
Q: What camera/software/lighting/music do you use to make your videos?
A: I film my videos with the Canon G7X Mark II (I love it!) and I have a Neweer Ring Light. I use iMovie to edit, PicMonkey for thumbnails, and I use Epidemic Sound, BenSound and the RUclips library for music!

Im partially deaf in my left ear due to chronic ear infections when I was younger. I have never been offered a hearing aid. I have been told eventually I will have zero hearing in that ear . So this video has made me want to push for a hearing aid

Hi Charlotte, I don’t normally comment on RUclips videos but I felt I needed to in this circumstance. I’m a 16 year old girl who is getting a hearing aid tomorrow and I just wanted to say thank you. I, like you, have a very rare genetic condition which has all sorts of side effects one of which being damage to the nerves resulting in me having mild to moderate hearing loss. And to be honest with you I was terrified at the thought of looking different since all the other scary side effects of my condition are not typically visible. Initially, the thought really knocked my confidence and made me much quieter which is unlike me as I am very loud and out going, but then I found your channel (your videos on hearing loss particularly) and you gave me back my confidence. You showed me that it’s ok to be different and that I deserve to be able to hear properly regardless of what people think. I can now say that thanks to you part of me is excited to begin a new chapter of my life where I hopefully won’t have to ask people to repeat themselves as much and I’m excited to show that ‘normal’ people can wear hearing aids too. I hope you read this and see what a positive impact you’ve had on my whole experience. Thanks again, Leah x

Though it's been awhile since you posted this, I just want to say thank you that you did. You just gave me the courage and acceptance about getting a hearing aid. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart.
Thank you so much Charlotte for this, I was diagnosed with moderate to severe hearing loss in both ears especially affecting speech clarity just 3 weeks ago. It was a shock to me as I hadn’t realised that I had any issues with my hearing until a friend highlighted it. This made me reflect and think and I then asked some friends if they thought I had an issue with my hearing and all but two said yes! I subsequently had a hearing test which showed me I that I also have NIHL and I discovered that my mum has been wearing hearing aids since she was 40 and she’s now 76! I had just started a new job as an OT so I had to tell my manager who has been very supportive. I got my hearing aids last week (Phonak with Bluetooth) and they are amazing! I can’t believe I didn’t notice that I couldn’t hear! But I have struggled to come to terms with my hearing loss and it has had an impact on my confidence. I know it’ll get better. I’ve always been super fit and super healthy so having to rely on technology to function sufficiently throughout the day especially in my job has been a little overwhelming. Atm putting my hearing aids in each morning is a constant reminder that I have a disability but at the same time I am
so thankful that I have these amazing hearing aids that have opened up my world. So thank you for sharing. It really helps

It's so comforting listening to people in a similar position with such similar opinions. I'm trialling some aids out ... I have mild loss but I still find I'm struggling in restaurants or bars even with them in. Thank you!

Thank you so so much! I got hearing aids two days before this video was posted. I’ve got otosclerosis which basically means the bones in your ear that vibrate are becoming fixed. I relate to this so much!! Please can you do more videos like this! Maybe like experiences or funny or embarrassing stories. It’s great to see a ‘ normal’ you tuber who I watch going through a similar situation and being so open (not that it’s great you have hearing loss but you know what I mean) Thanks again!
hiya x i just found out today that i will be needing hearing aids for both ears and i have been feeling really weird about it as i thought being 19 and having to use hearing aids was a bit strange, i am a bit worried about getting them and how people will treat me once i have them. This video has really helped a lot , it is nice to know that you and others have similar feelings and worries and it has helped to reassure me a lot.

Thank you for this video Charlotte :) I've had mine 4 years now and like you say, they've changed my life and I also hate it when I run out of battery or forget them. I'm still working on putting my hair up when I'm wearing them though - you've encouraged me to try not worrying about that. Really relate to the itchy ears - drives me crazy! Your hearing loss videos are what brought me to your channel! I'm 28, and I choose my first hearing aids tomorrow. I also have a connective tissue disorder that affects my collagen as well (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome)! Thank you for sharing your experience, I also have mild to moderate hearing loss and I can't wait to hear the little things again x
This was really interesting, Charlotte. I remember that you were a bit wobbly about your hearing aids when you first got them, so I'm really pleased that you seem to have made your peace with them now. x
A great video, Charlotte. You have such a pragmatic view on life. A friend of mine has worn aids for 30 years. Unfortunately, she has always tried to hide it from everyone, apart from her immediate family and a few close friends, like me. She is so sensitive about it, as she feels that people will judge her. It makes me really sad, as actually most people have realised and don’t give a jot.

This is so usefull as people at school in my classes have hearing aids.
Also glasses are cool and i have to wear them and keep a eye on my eyes as i notice a difference as i had a squint when i was little and am short sighted
I am a 34 year old mom of 2 and in the morning I am going to be fitted for my first pair of hearing aides. I also have mild to moderate hearing loss. This was so comforting and encouraging. Thank you for the positive words and I'm looking forward to the benefits!
Hi charlotte ive had mine a week now and watched your other videos on this subject what a lovely person you are and its great how you make people like myself and others feel reasured keep them coming my hearing aids arecthe same as yours im amazed how sharp the sounds around me are now.

Finally at 30 years old I have been tested. Iv known for so long that my hearing wasn’t right but my husband pushed me to get tested and I found out I have very significant hearing loss and need hearing aids. I am so nervous to get them but your video has put me at ease. Thank you 🙏
Loved watching this video. I have a cleft palette and Pierre Robin syndrome as well. I also have hearing aids for both ears as well. Knowing that I’m not the only person with all this has made me happier. Thank you for sharing your story it’s made me feel not alone
Hy hun I'm in the same boat ,I've got to have double hearing aids because I've got nerve damage in both ears and they will get worse as I get older. I've waited so long to go see someone about my ears but now I can't wait,just to hear properly again will be amazing.

Hello Charlotte, thanks for your great videos I have found them very informative. Whilst watching this video the NHS have just popped my new hearing aids through the letterbox, couldn't go for a fitting because of Covid, so now going for a test drive once I have read all the info, thanks again. Thank you for this, I watched your first one the day before getting my hearing aid and it really helped me. I am getting on really well with them and hopefully will continue to. I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome myself which is due to faulty collagen too.

I've only gotten to 4:08 and I'm teared up. I've experienced hearing loss from as early as 5, my family never took me to get it assessed despite the complaints. I'm in my 30's now and just started experiencing tinnitus only to realise that I almost can't hear a thing from one ear. Now, I'm in the Caribbean, laid off work and there's no otolaryngologist on my island. Wanting to get my hearing assessed and addressed is what I pray for most. I don't know how or when but I'll keep praying for a way. Been trying to source doctors so I'm researching prices, countries etc. So glad I stumbled across you.
So glad you have done this video. I don't have hearing aids but have had hearing problems since being a child.. I used to get told i was faking it by the audiologist.. my hearing is so bad after having my last son so I need to go back to the doctors x
Hi, I have been wearing hearing aids for the last year also, same time last June. I'm in my 30's and the last time I got my ears checked before last year was when I was child. I'm like you got mild to moderate hearing loss in both ears, from ear infections and other things I had going on as a child. My mom kept bugging me to go get them checked out and that's when I found out I needed hearing aids, I also wear glasses and contacts on top of my hearing aids!
My mum's just started wearing ear aids and it's taking her a bit to get use to wearing them. Brilliant video

Thank you for making this video. Im 38 right now, I have moderate high frequency loss on my right hear. But since hearing on my left ear is now declining too, I was finally offered the chance to have a hearing aid. For now only on my right ear. It has changed my life a lot. Im a singer, I feel a lot more confident singing now. And your video has helped me a lot to deal with the emotions that come with a big change.

Hi Charlotte thanks so much for making this video. Unfortunately there are so few user reviews of hearing aids on RUclips so it’s great to see one by someone who isn’t being paid by one of the big brands. I’ve worn hearing aids most of my life (I stopped for a few years as teenage/young adult stupid rebellion and am now 31) and can offer a few tips on some of your frustrations:
- the little tail on the end isn’t actually for pulling the aids out, although it does help. It acts as a retention wire and helps the aid stay in the ear canal. If you take it off the aid will fall out. (When I first got this style of aid I didn’t have one and it sucked).
- the receiver (which is the cable that goes in your ear) should last longer than six months. However, the domes that go in your ear should be replaced regularly - like every couple of weeks. Depending on the device there is a wax guard under the dome that should be replaced weekly. That will make a massive difference to the vibrancy of the aid. I wasn’t told this when I first got this style of device.
- some devices come with softer domes which are so much more comfortable as they are made of a softer plastic. It reduces the scratchy feeling in the canal and just makes them feel a lot less annoying.
We need more videos about user tips. We should collaborate. :)
I have been wearing the Phonak hearing aids for around 9 months now due to mild to moderate hearing loss. I’m 36 and my tinnitus started when I was 21. I have constant ringing in both ears and over the years my hearing has also deteriorated. My hearing aids give me so much confidence and I describe it like having my head in a glass bowl when I don’t wear them. Thanks for your lovely video x

Lovely video 😊 my 6 year old daughter was born deaf and fitted with hearing aids when she was 15 weeks old (severe/profound loss) at 3 her hearing was deteriorating more and she was fitted with cochlear implants. Unfortunately due to the inner ear structure she hasnt developed speech, but now she is a fluent BSL user 😍 she also uses some lip reading 😊 i hate being somewhere when you have forgot a supply of batteries! Xxx

I have worn glasses since I was 8 yrs old, and in school some children made fun. But at least I could see lol.
My dad had hearing aids for year's and he used to comment about people not repeating themselves.

I’m 29 and have just been told I need them too due to premature cochlear degeneration.

@@baseballlive77 mines just comes on suddenly like really high pitched ringing to the point where I can hardly hear anything else. It goes away within a minute or two though.
I would say I’ve had it for about the past 5/6 years. It hasn’t gotten noticeably worse thankfully
I'm 27 and just got a referral to see an ENT specialist as I've had hearing problems in my left ear for years and am finally trying to get something sorted. Had so many different answers and I'm excited to finally get an answer. I expect the outcome will be a hearing aid and I'm honestly excited about it lol...
Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I've just found out I have severe hearing loss in both ears, along with really loud Tinnitus, which is masking my hearing even further. I'm having the hearing aids fitted tomorrow, so the tips you've shared from your experience are most useful and welcome. Videos like this are so helpful and reassuring. do the hearing aids help deal with the tinnitus? like lowering the intensity and make it less bothersome .
Yash They seem to affect my perception of the Tinnitus. It certainly feels less present when the hearing aids are in. And I notice a considerable increase in intensity when I take them out at night. It never goes away. But as I said, it does change my perception of the Tinnitus intensity. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much for sharing! One day about four months back, I suddenly lost some of my hearing in my right ear. At the time i though my right ear was just blocked, but the doctors found no sign of blockage. I am 17 years old, and not knowing what caused my hearing loss has really given me a heard time. I have become really anxious and depressed. I have not been able to go the doctors over the summer due to them being on vacation.. Hearing you talk about how much hearing aids helped you have given me hope and made me look forward to getting one! I also have ringing in my right ear due to my hearing loss, do any of you have any experience with a hearing aid for both hearing loss and tinnitus ?
Hi Charlotte. I'm Jen, I am 34 years old. I live in Surrey in the the Uk. I was born with a similar syndrome to your condition, but neither me or my family realised everything which was different about me was actually linked until I was well into my teenage years and we went to see a geneticist. I have a 1 in 25 % chance of passing my condition on to my own children. I'm dreading any child I have going through everything I went through medically, growing up, especially if they're partially deaf blind like me. I was born, like you, unable to feed or breathe, so I was transfered from the hospital where I was born, to another hospital a few miles up the road for the first of, wait for it, mum reckons around 30 surgeries to close a massive fistula which affected the whole of my mouth including teeth and lips. I had 5, braces to straighten out my top teeth as far as they could be straightened, plus a piece of bone grafted to my gumbs from my left hip to where my gums hadn't formed properly either, so they would have been permanently wobbly without the extra bone there.The hole in the roof of my mouth is still there, making eating and drinking still quite challenging for me today, to the point where I use straws and or spoons for most foods which don't need cutting up or which are particularly sloppy. I wanted my nose and lips rebuilt, because my top lip was about a quarter of the size of my bottom lip which really stuck out and I thought that to be the reason why I dribbled a lot especially when I was asleep. I had my forehead moved forward where my skull didn't fuse properly. Mum said the docs thought they might have to fracture my skull and so the bones fused properly, but I don't think that happened in the end. I was also left totally or legally blind as my eyes barely formed. I had an optic nerve when I was born so I had light and colour perception for my first 4 years of life, then everything, suddenly, went dark, shortly before I started School. My retina and optic nerve had died, despite a successful Corneal graft surgery 3 and a half years earlier. Lastly but not leastly, my hearing. I have normal hearing in my left ear but moderate to severe hearing loss in my right ear. I struggle with normal behind the ear or in-ear hearing aids, whether they're NHS hearing aids, amps or various other hearing aids which I acquired from Boots Opticians or a private clinic in the town where I lived. Everything is louder for me wearing hearing aids in my deformed right ear, but the behind the ear or in-ear hearing aids also cut out very loud noise, so when I eat out in pub restaurants sometimes or I go to discos, concerts, parties Etc, its like I've gone deaf in my right ear and I can't hear anybody on my right side, so I have to insist I sit to the right hand side or right hand end of a table or group of people so I can join in with conversations around me. An old Schoolfriend had a bone anchor hearing aid or BAHA implanted nearly 18 months ago. She is also blind like me, but she was born 3 or 4 months premature. She had severe problems with both ears. She has a daughter who turns 3 tomorrow. She's trialling a second BAHA on the left side of her head on a soft band. For those who don't know, a bone anchor hearing aid or BAHA is a sound processor which clicks into an titanium bolt in the side of the skull a few milimetres to an inch from the affected ear if not both ears in some cases. The abutment is the receiver in the side of the skull which conducts sound through the bones of the skull and bypasses the parts of the middle and inner ear or ears which can't pick up or let in any sound because of the way they have formed. I trialled a sound processor for a Cochlear BAHA 5 smart on the right side of my head for two weeks at the beginning of December 2017, then I had a 5 months 1 week wait until I had a 12 milimetre Titanium bolt or abutment, drilled and screwed into my skull, about an inch above my right ear. That was the worst of all the surgeries I have ever had, because I stupidly decided, because I had bad reactions to general anaesthetic in the past, I'd have this operation under local, for nobody who had it before on the BAHA users group said it would vibrate so badly and so loudly, I would have an anxiety attack on the table, which is exactly what happened. 4 weeks ago yesterday, on the 22nd of May 2018, I went through 90 minutes of absolute hell, but I am sincerely hoping it will all be worth it when I get my sound processor unit on Friday the 13th of July 2018, first thing that morning, followed by the first of hopefully many check ups.
Great video, I have a hearing aid, I’ve got cholesteotoma, I had surgery last year so I’ve not needed to wear it recently but have noticed it going again so I really should maybe start wearing it again!! Just need new batteries!!!
We have just been told my 18m old daughter needs hearing aids. Can't wait for her world to open up so much more when she hears new sounds clearly for the first time. My daughter also has a mild-moderate hearing loss, born with a cleft lip and still has a large gum notch but the hearing issues are completely unrelated to the cleft. How do you find flying with hearing aids? We have 2 holidays coming up and I just wondered if the cabin pressure caused any issues. X

I would like to say thank you for this video as I was born with hearing loss due to being born 3 months early but no one knew til I was 5 years old but luckily I had hearing aids from then on. When I was younger no knew I would be able to talk like someone who's never had hearing loss. I have the same hearing aid as u and I also find my ears r ichy and yes battery is annoying and always stock up and have a pack in ya handbag. Also I have to have my ears clean with ear drops
I love this video! I have had my hearing aid for about 15 months but only in the one ear. I am due to have my baby any day now (in fact I am 6 days overdue!!) and one thing I am worried about is if I am lying on my 'good' ear of a night when I don't have my hearing aid in will I hear my baby cry?! Now everybody says I will hear him cry but they also don't have hearing loss so can't appreciate my concern. How have you found it of a night with Stanley crying? Do you have any tips for the night when not wearing a hearing aid? Xx

I have been wearing hearing aids for a year and I just got my hearing checked and I’m getting my new hearing aids in the next coming weeks. I went from mild to moderate hearing loss to severe to profound hearing loss and I thought it was a double ear infection again it’s such a big change. However people tease me at university
I'm getting my first ones in a few weeks and I'm so nervous. Will people be able to see it and will they treat me different. Will it bother me to wear them. Lots of worries. Your video has helped me a lot. Thank you.

i should hopefully be getting some hearings aids soon, i’m trying out a new kind called Evotion which isn’t available yet! so i’m basically a guinea pig! 😂🙌🏻 Did you have to have an MRI scan, because i’m now having my second one just to check there’s no other problems. One question, how long did you feel it took to get used to them, did it put you off at first, was it too loud? thank you for posting this video 💖
Ever since i found this out from a doctor friend I have been on a mission to tell anyone with small children. **button batteries are deadly if swallowed** Its not a case of operate and get then back out bc they leak. I didn't want to scare anyone. But I have a 5yr old who mouths everything. He has swallowed a magnet. Thankfully just the one. So I am hyper aware of this.

Lovely, educational video. Couple of questions: 1) Is there a rechargeable battery for them? And 2) Do you find that a day without the hearing aids leaves you feeling tired? I’m a teacher & a student who is hard of hearing will often flag quite drastically if he’s forgotten his hearing aid. Do you find it happens to you? It may be a childhood thing or changes person-to-person.
lubeeluonline Ooo! I love a good question. The first one, not that I know of. You do get free batteries on the NHS though, which is a plus. And the second one - I definitely get tired. My audiologist said that she felt for me that I’d waited so long as it’s so much extra work for the brain and trying to concentrate. Most people just hear. With hearing loss you have to actively concentrate when you don’t have them in. And it can really take it out of you. How old is the student? Maybe worth having a chat with his parents and see if there’s a way to help him remember them. I feel for him! He must find it tough! You’re so lovely for thinking of him! xxx
Charlotte Louise Taylor Thank you for the response. He’s 10 & has been almost profoundly deaf in one ear since birth (the “almost” bit is super important as it means he can use a hearing aid). It’s not often that they forget but it’s really noticeable when they do due to the fatigue that sets in. It’s interesting to know how much energy trying to hear consumes!
I’m currently trialling a new pair that has rechargeable batteries. I don’t think that would be a good option for children with aids as they would forget to charge overnight and the charge only lasts about 18 hours. My old pair would last a week per battery.
It can go both ways with fatigue. If my aids are sitting in the ear wrong (as Charlotte mentions in the video) it can be exhausting. It can also be exhausting if they are tuned wrong and there is a lot of noise as sometimes the hearing aids can make things too loud. For example a tambourine can set off a clicking sound in the aids that really hurts.
Hi Charlotte,I have followed your hearing aid postings for the past year,I am glad your hearing aids are apart of you now and you have a supportive family,a friend of mine has sticklers,she cannot use the phone anymore,she has a minicom,I have worn hearing aids for over 40 years,I started with the body worn ones with cords and button receivers in my ears,and on a bad hearing day I still use them! But I have 2 bte hearing aids from the nhs and blue silicone molds,I have had to have speech therapy as I cannot hear my voice anymore,so my voice can be loud and it sounds like I have a cold and a lisp all the time,have your family and friends noticed any change in your speech? If your children need hearing aids in the future you can show them what they are like,I cannot understand why it's ok to wear glasses and get very few negative comments but when you wear hearing aids you are seen as retarded if thats the right word,or they shout at you,even here on you tube you have a few thumbs down,what is their problem?? You are very bubbly and beautiful,you don't look 29,more like 21,so please post more hearing updates and how your next test goes,I am classed as severe to profoundly deaf! But what's in a name!loads of love to you all..

I just got hearing aid today and it was a struggle. Im just at lower end of normal they say but i notice difference now
Hi Charlotte! I’ve not watched any of your other hearing videos but I wanted to watch this one as I’ve got an appointment booked at the ENT clinic tomorrow. Basically since I was young I noticed I’ve had bad ringing in my ears but never thought anything of it til now. I’m nearly 18 as you may know. Now, I’ve noticed I always have to turn volume up on things and I get annoyed at people if they talk quieter to me than usual as I can’t hear that well. I know your hearing loss is due to your syndrome and I don’t have that but I was wondering if you noticed any other symptoms? If you want to call it that. Like ringing or anything like that? The appointment all went good. They did a hearing test and they said my hearing is fine and don’t need nothing drastic like hearing aids. Turns out I have Tinnitus! There’s no cure for it but the specialist told me some remedies to try for it xxx
My dad has tinnitus. It tends to get stronger if he's listening to white noise in the background like in a car or something, so he wears earplugs to help... I'm curious if your tinnitus is reactive or if it just stays steady all the time?
I have hearing loss and tinnitus myself but I don't think it reacts to certain sounds, I just know some people's does. :P :)
Mines stronger if I’m in a quiet room or if I’ve been near loud noise it’s worse after that. Mine seems to be better if I’m actually in the car and have the window down and hear the noise of the cars and the wind x

I have hearing aids since I was 12-13 got them for starting high school and I cannot live without them I’m now 27 I have went in a shower n not realised either lol n had to throw them xx
I'm 30 and really want to get a hearing aid because it dramatically effects my life but hearing ads are SO expensive and insurance doesn't cover it 😥
