You guys are not kidding when it comes to inflation hitting us hard. I am an Uber Lyft driver that pays $326.72 a month for just one car. I used to pay $340 a month for the same Infiniti Q70L. I know it’s because of my rideshare endorsement. I’ve been an Uber Lyft Driver for almost 6 years. I’ve picked up 9,348 passengers under Lyft and another 1,721 passengers under Uber equaling 11,069 so far. To think that I only paid $120 for my 2006 Pontiac GTO when it was brand new back in 2007.

In the UK car insurance seemed to spike with EV claims ranging from EV's burned down a house or more to the extent they wont insure an EV if you keep it in your garage or charge it in your garage. it is still thought that an EV was the cause of the Luton airport car park fire.

I drive a 20 year-old Land Rover and last year my insurance company tried to DOUBLE the cost of my policy.
When I told them I was - as I was speaking to them - looking at a comparison website that was offering insurance for half what they quoted me, they still only offered to reduce their quote by around 5%.
I thanked them for their time and went elsewhere... to a company that's just renewed my policy for the 2nd time at almost exactly the same price I paid last year.
Pretty sure insurance companies are a lot like credit-cards, ISPs and utility companies now; they offer discounts to new customers and gradually ramp-up the costs, hoping customers won't bother to look elsewhere.

Same issue I had with Progressive, except in my case, they lied to my state and told them their was a gap in my coverage, when infact there was not (i purchased a new policy with a different company 2 days earlier). Because of Progressive's spiteful fraudulent activity, my registrations got suspended, and I had to pay to get them reinstated, pay for new plates, and get notarized proof of the insurance coverage dates. Corporate greed and incompetence. The person who cancelled my policy at progressive could barely speak english.

As I have seen, one of the biggest reason for insurance hikes is down to electric vehicles. It's almost to the point, that if you scratch one it's a write off. So, with the amount of payouts the insurance companies are doing, you have to expect, they will hike their charges to get their money back. In fact, there is a lot of companies that will no longer insure an EV. Yep, EV's are sure the future.......NOT🤨

I work as a car insurance estimator, a big factor is the cost to repair the newer cars. So many have radar sensors, cameras, park sensors in the front and LED headlights, so once they wreck all that is expensive, and I commonly see $500-1,000 bills to calibrate the ADAS systems, which is a ripoff but it basically has to be done for safety so dealers or stand-alone calibration companies charge a ton for it. I commonly see $8-10k repair bills for hitting a deer and a few years ago they were more like $5k.

Same as unemployment - it's only tracking full-time workers against unemployment claims. The real U6 figure is very different. 9% in my state. That feels correct - about 1 in 10 people are unemployed or under-employed/below the poverty limit.
www.bea.gov/data/prices-inflation/gdp-price-deflator - this is the actual data. You can see if you go to "interactive data" that the increases are per quarter and quite in line with what we see - closer to a 30% actual inflation rate if you rent, own a car, have to pay for insurance, or and so on.

As far as I'm aware, the reason the fed gives that number is because its more of a month over month kind of thing.
I have a business in the insurance industry, there was data aggregated and the real number on each insurance company's inflation since 2019 is about 30%-40%.
FYI: If you're looking to save money on insurance, consider a broker.
They have access to tons of top carriers and can get you some great rates.
There is also tons of Niche carriers you've never heard of that can write you, these are great for poorer credit, tickets/accidents/DUI, etc.
Some companies I've seen that are ultra competitive right now are Progressive and Farm Bureau.
Farm Bureau has the most loyal customers I have ever seen (tons of 30+ years customers).
Progressive is just hard to beat, they have incredible pricing.
Consider Gainsco if you have an old car and do state minimums, they're very price competitive in that niche.
Stay away from State Farm, they preach having your own agent but they treat their customers like cash-cows, they don't care about you.

I can offer some insight on why the Lexus ES300h is so expensive to insure. I had a current generation ES300h that was involved in a front right side collision with no airbag deployment back in August 2023 which required approximately $16k in repairs. I didn’t get the vehicle back from a highly ratedToyota dealership collision center here in Virginia until December 2023. The ES300h is built in Japan compared to the standard ES and the invoice had all these parenthesis on the replacement parts “Japan Built” and thus took much longer to source according to the shop.
The aftermarket replacement parts would not align properly and they had to go with new OEM replacements for nearly everything which is why it took so long to finish. Exceptional build quality these cars, but my insurance through USAA was very close to the quote in this video.

That is how insurance works it is a co-op. Rather than you paying thousands of dollars for an accident the co-op or other insurees help pay for your costs. Sadly when you go to cheaper companies you actually get what you pay for. I have talked to a few Auto body repair shops and ask them who is the worst insurance that they have to deal with and more than one of them have said progressive because they are reluctant to pay the estimate that the body shop gives them.

@davidclemens1578 While I agree with you, I think his point is that 1 in 7 drivers don't pay into this system. As a result, if one of those drivers causes an accident you may be the one who ultimately has to pay for your own damages despite being insured and not at fault.
The idea of "Underinsured Motorist Coverage" is essentially an extra cost you incur to protect yourself from these situations. Which speaks to this commenters point that those who pay often subsidize those that do not. Kind of ignores the fact that the person who is at fault can still be held legally responsible for the damage and repayment, whether or not you'll ever actually see that money.

You would think insurance companies would have money reserves to pay for the things that happen but of course its all about shareholders profits so our money paid in goes right out to them. Then claims happen, hey we need more from you because we have to keep paying the shareholders the same.

I have a family member that owns a small independent insurance agency in a town with about 28k people in it. And lots of smaller insurance companies have gone out of business or had to merge to survive. The covid car and house inflation caught so many companies off guard in 22& 23. Any claim that happens they have to pay the current value of whatever needs to be replaced/ repaired. They were still charging pre covid rates and a lot lost out. And the cost of medical expenses for an accident went up, and they had to pay. I know several nurses that work in Milwaukee and there was such a shortage for a will they were being offered triple time for any hour that they worked over the normal 40. If you don’t want to pay higher rates you can go with your state limits, create a trust title the cars in a LLC that you also create in the trust. If you were to be at fault for a large accident they could only take the state limits from the policy and sue for the value of the LLC/trust. But you’d be responsible out of pocket for any legal fees from a lawsuit against that. And you’d have to pay to create a trust. So for the average person it’s not really worth the hassle.

Why would anyone replace a metal roof with hail dents? The whole reason to go with a metal roof is to remain intact during wind, hail and wild fires. The notion of an insurance company paying for a new replacement for an old, cosmetically damaged roof seems like it would be expensive.

    • @ViolentMLG
      @ViolentMLG Месяц назад +4

@@frankhage1734 Its called replacement cost coverage, and yes an insurance company will pay out to replace the entirety of the roof, or anything else, if it is damaged, as if it were new, as opposed to depreciated value (ACV).
      RC policies are more expensive.
If you live in Kansas, I would assume they exclude wind/hail damage from homes due to the risk there, but I could be wrong.
Although hypothetically, if you were to do this and file a 200K claim and it wasn't excluded, you would get dropped by your insurance carrier and your premiums would be through the roof (pun intended) for quite awhile.

This inflation stuff is terrifying. My insurance doubled! I thought it was unfair as I made my firwst claim in twenty years after my car got washed away in a massive flood. I mean, I didn't cause the flood, I am not God! I just parked my car and overnight the waters decided to swallow my town. Everything has gone up over these past twelve months.

My 18 year old son driving will have our car insurance be over $10K per year. My home owners policy just increased 40% as well. Like you, we don't have claims, and have just been given the excuse of claims as a result of the weather here in Texas.

I hate to agree with Tyler, but Kudos for pointing out that driving habits went to hell during the pandemic. I tend to blame everything that’s gone crazy since 2021 on the effects of COVID, but when people stopped paying attention to red lights it only makes sense that insurance claims (and then premiums) would go up. Until they start enforcing the laws again this is not going to stop.

When I bought my 2023 Defender 90 last October the first thing my Insurance agent asked me was if it was an EV. I'm paying $1800 a year and don't think it's too high.
EV's are so easily totaled because of the batteries and fear of fire if they get damaged. You also have people who can't afford their car payments anymore and are wrecking them or having them stolen on purpose to get out of the loans. So everybody else has to pay for them and prices go up.

I worked for an insurance company through the pandemic, and I’m actually kind of disappointed that you, Hoovie, as a car enthusiast didn’t think of this already - insurance companies are in the business of repairing and replacing cars, and we saw literally statistically the largest increase in those 2 things on record. Of course the cost of insuring cars went up drastically. The same thing happened to homes. Remember when the price of vehicles increased significantly, like 10-50% depending on the car? That’s what you’re paying for. I bought a Hyundai in 2019 that’s worth $1,000 less KBB today than when I bought it with 40k miles. You’re paying more money because the insurance companies will pay more money if you have a claim. Also, I quit working for insurance companies within the last year. They suck, but for other reasons - this makes sense.

Phones are the biggest problem, but the fact that visibility from modern cars is absolutely horrible is probably a big part of the accident rate increase. How about instead of blind spot monitoring, cameras and electronic “driver aides” just build cars people can actually see out of again.

The government inflation figures are based on a list of about 300 durable goods. Rent, insurance, and utilities are NOT tracked properly as nobody I know is paying less than $1200 a month. Rent could double and we're still officially at 3 or 4%. lol. No, not making this up, either. Everyone I know is paying about twice to just live month to month as three years ago. Where I live, it's now $3K a year with a clean record. It went from $160 a month to $240.

Been with this insurance company 7 years. Last my homeowners ins jumped 27% on a 1400 sq ft home and I pay $1200 a year on 2012 Ford Fusion now. Call around and they are still the cheapest for me. I just don't get it. I miss the good old days when responsible behavior, keeping same car, being loyal to provider was rewarded with lower rates.

Insurance man tells me EV's insurance will skyrocket.
Recently a EV had a crash at a roundabout near my house. Rolled over on its side and damaged the bottom of the car and battery pack cover. Tow truck wouldn't take it without being inspected by an expert from the car company. The roundabout was closed for hours with police, fire truck, barriers in attendence until the expert arrived. After towing had to be left in a paddock well away from other cars in case of battery incident. If the crashed car had been an ICE vehicle it could have been rolled back onto its wheels and driven off.

Funny this video came out because I had a shower thought last night about this same topic. Every time I try to cut some of my personal spending back, be it canceling subscriptions, changing providers, etc, something always offsets that's savings with in a month or two. Bought new Corolla Hybrid to replace my 2021 GTI. Fuel cost to go way down, but insurance goes up. I actually thought the insurance would go down, but nope. Then I got a friendly reminder from a friend that when it's time to renew the registration on the car in a year, I'll be hit with an additional $60 hybrid tax. Yes Kentucky wants their money because charging yearly property value taxes on homes and cars just isn't enough apparently. So it seems like no matter what I do to save, with in a month or two, something hits back. Like you Tyler, I never use my insurance. Trust me, I'd love to use it on a tree in my backyard that's been threatening to topple over. But at the same time, I don't want a rate hike. So if they are going to hike my rates, well I want it to be worth while, so when it eventually falls, takes out the privacy fence, roof, gutters, and part of my neighbors roof, then at least it's justified rate hikes.

Also, get the cat spayed. The health issues later in life aren't worth it. Mine is currently recovering from a late (13y/o) spay because she had uterine infection that is apparently common in older intact females.
