I think the reason for those treatments against the athletes is because they are physically amazing and work hard and with skill but don't manage their own finances, or seem in charge enough of their own lives (mainly finances) this is the case with many people. Managing your finances is ultimate independence. I'm not completely independent myself and so I'm no judge here on this.
