Airfix H oo scale is a railway scale it is roughly 1/76 though airfix also re-boxed them as 1/72 . These are the kits I made as a kid the bagged kits were 20 pence and the bottom of the range and were the single seat fighters and the tanks . They weren’t very accurate but to a 7 year old they looked the part and were pocket money friendly.
HO scale is actually 1/87
@@mikequandt7724 Most probably true but the same kits from Airfix were sold as 1/76 ,1/72 and 00 and were made to go along side their 1/72nd scale small soldiers. They weren’t that accurate and were made for youngsters to make and as a 7 year old I wasn’t that bothered.
I just knew this because my father was an avid model railroader. I never really got into it myself.
I built plenty of these as a kid,but they were in old money when I started lol,1 bob and ninepence.
OO scale is unique to the UK and is a bit of an oddity. The bodies of trains are 1/76 scale, but the gauge (ie the width of the track) is the same as HO (1/87). Since OO scale model railways were very popular in the UK, Airfix made their military vehicle kits to the same scale to be compatible. Matchbox also did their military vehicles in 1/76, as did Fujimi.
The airfix hanger kits takes me back to my child hood. my first kits in the late sixties. you had to be carefull opening them as the hanger label had the instructions printed on the inside
I grew up in England in the 1950's/60's and bought and built one of the Airfix bagged kits from the local Woolworths store about every 2 weeks. They would cost me 2 shillings which I think amounts to 18 cents in the US, I didn't paint the kits initially as my pocket money wouldn't stretch to buying paints. I always found the FROG kits very interesting as they often produced kits of more unusual subjects, like the Westland Wallace and Wapiti and other between war aircraft, also many kits of British naval aircraft.
As a boy I finshed one of these my dad started when he was a boy himself. That special feeling. It was closely after watching the movie The Battle of Britain. That's where it all started. Good memories😊. Thanks for sharing.
I remember watching Battle of Britain with my dad too. Great times! We also watched 12 O'clock High. Models are still a part of my life, and I love it.

those bag kits bring me right back to my childhood in the 60's,all my early kits came in a bag,Airfix gave you a slip of paper in the bag in case there was parts missing,you filled out the little slip,posted it and they sent you out the missing part !

I remember very well and it was quite cheap in the mid sixties. Often with my pocket money I would run to the local shop and buy some Panther! My mother complained that I had a fully fledged Panzer Division and with a great commander like me I was never loosing!! Memories...
The Bren Carrier brings back memories form almost 60 years ago. Neat little vehicle.
I'm building one now,I think they're still using the same moulds,massive gaps in between the parts,but the nostalgia factor hides the frustration.

I've build a few of the Jo Han airplane kits. They have almost no interior, but they were fun to build.

AWESOMENESS in a small plastic bag (and its all legal). The JoHan aircraft kits were made with John Hanley's patented 'no touch' parts trees. These kits ended up at Intech and later Smer. I think they added a few planes from other manufacturers like FROG via Intech but it was never their focus (although John Haenle reportedly LOVED aircraft). The 'too little-too late' comment is spot on!
OO scale is a popular English/European model train scale that is about 1/76 scale (OK, it is 1/76.2 if we want to get all 'Mr. Spock' about it). 😁

Those bag kits bring back memories. There was a rack of them by the check out counter at the hobbyshop my dad took me and my brother to. We built plenty.
When I was a kid they were on a spinning rack at my local newsagents, good times, kits were cheap back then.
In the sixties in the UK the cost of a bagged Airfix kit was, around 2 shillings, or 10 pence in today's money.
Seeing some of those bagged Airfix kits is a trip down memory lane for me.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!! I paid $1.25 (which was spendy) for my first bagged 1/72 scale Airfix Stuka. Again, my undieing gratitude.

Loving it! My first ever model kit was an Airfix bagged kit of the Spitfire Vb in that iconic blue plastic that I bought in a local cornershop. Fond memories. Keep it coming Andy.
The Jo-Han planes came out in early 1974. I had all of them at one time, except the P-40 which I could never find. The frame lok boxes were neat. The model kits were all engraved and were excellent for 1974. I built a couple of the P-47's and also the Corsair and the Rufe. The Rufe could be built as a Zero as well.
The Frog Sea Venom came out in 1973/74. Bought one at Combat Hobbies in Atlanta. Revell Germany also had it out a few years back.
Wow, what a great bunch of classic kits. I'm currently building an Airfix R.E.8 that came in the same style packaging as that 1957 Stuka and the Airfix tanks. Mine'a a 1968 release I think but the kit was originally from around 1957. The instructions have the same artwork style as the 1967 kits you have. My father bought it sometime in the early to mid 70's. It's gone together quite well for such an old kit. The pilot and co-pilot are funny little guys and the decals have yellowed, but are still useable as far as I can tell. I've had them stuck to the window for a while to lighten up but the pilot names and aircraft numbers have not changed much. I'll probably just use them anyway and hope for the best. I had a few Frog kits years ago. I was building a Gloster Meteor a while back but the silver paint was giving me so much trouble I gave up on it. That was way before I got into airbrushing.

I really liked the old Jo-Han aircraft kits. My favorite was the Me-262, which could be built as a single seater or two seater. The canopies were extremely clear with very sharp detail for the time, (for ALL time, really.) I had several of them on hand when the "Luftwaffe '46" theme really got started in the late 1980's, and these kits really lent themselves to extensive modification. Thanks for posting this!
Got my bag kits from a petrol station in East London , my dad took me down there when we needed paraffin for our heaters ! No central heating back then 👍🏁
Hi Andy, that was very generous of the gentleman, seeing that plastic bags reminded me how kits came packaged, I think they were 1/72nd scale aircraft, have a great weekend, regards from a Kiwi living in Australia.
Andy 00 Scale usually is associated with Model Railroading it the size of the train or vehicle in comparison to the life size vehicle.
If it indeed does refer to a model railroading scale, then it equates to about 1/76th scale.

The Pyro 1/32 car kits aren't bad for their age, and they did some interesting subjects. I built their 1940 Ford 2-door sedan as a US army staff car years back, still have their 1934 Plymouth sedan with similar intentions, and used a Rolls-Royce of theirs as the basis for a scratchbuild/kitbash of the armoured car long before the Roden and Meng kits were available.

That sprue gate reinforcing the box idea is pretty cool, have a few kits that would have benefited greatly. Manufactures should look into modifying the pizza box saver for some of their kits.

Hi Andy. Great show as usual! Nice to see some of the old kits from years gone bye...actually, I have that Jo-Han Me-109 kit, well I should say; what's left of it. Bought it several yrs ago, but never built it.
I´ve built that Bren carrier. Cardboard box with the same artwork. Had no idea how old the kit actually is. I also have Airfix Stuka.
They're still selling them. I bought one new about five or ten years ago. (still haven't built it...)

Built Airfix bag kits including the Stuka in the 1950’s. In England they cost 2/6. Two shillings and six pence which was my pocket money at the time. Started building kits again twelve months ago. How times have changed.
I have also started building again in the last year, after a 20 year break. I am trying to build all the 1970's kits that my grandmother sent to my father in the mid 70's. They came all the way to New Zealand from England and many of them were well mangled by the time they got here. I've finished the Cutty Sark and almost finished the 1/12th scale Bentley, 1/72 R.E.8 and a Revell 1/32 Spitfire. Also building a 1/16th De Dion Bouton made ny Japanese company Midori. Still got a the Airfix 1/24th Me 109, and Revell 1/32 Hurricane, Beaufighter, Stuka and US WW2 truck, as well as a few more Airfix, Revell and Aurora kits that my father bought in New Zealand.

This sort of bag kits are rare in Singapore, i bought a 1/72 Spitfire(blue color unbuild model in the clear bag) around 4 or 5 years ago that cost around 5 pound 30 pence
I'm actually building the (re-released) Airfix WW1Mk 1 tank I built as a kid when it was first released, only this time correcting some of the errors on the original - unknown to them back in 1967 based on a Mk 2 at Bovington Tank Museum. It is actually a really nice little model for its time.
I loved those models in bags when I was young and of course, they were affordable.
Very nice examples to receive and will make great additions. 00 scale equates to 1/76 scale and is/was also prevalent in model trains in the UK and Europe. The Airfix series 1 and 2 baggies would have been available in department stores such as Woolworths for about 20p (old money), have a few in the stash so must check.
The Series 1 and 2 baggies were eventually available on blister cards with the instructions printed on the back.
The thing I remember about the Airfix Me-262 was the area around the cockpit was off in shape. Which is very apparent when placed next to the Frog Me-262 which was considered the best kit in the 60's before Revell came out. A thing I remember about the Jo-Han Me-262 was deep square trenches in the panel lines.
Andy; From a conversion chart I have OO scale was a UK model rail scale 4mm scale with is 4mm per foot (1:76.2).
00 is 1:76 scale, the same scale as 00 model railways. I believe FROG (Flies Right Off the Ground) was the first ever maker of plastic model kits.
I had the Bf 109 when I was a kid. Mine was molded in burgundy
The 1/76 was also compatable with HO/OO scale Railways, made nice wartime track displays.
I remember those. They also had wwI aircraft. I used to build them. Thanks for the ride back in time.

I made both those armour kits when I was a lad. My local toy shop had loads of different kits hanging on metal pegs. I made the Gloden Hind and the Sopworth Camel biplane, Both came in bags. Think they were a shilling each. 5p in sterling today.. They were the cheapest Airfix kits later to becme series 1. slightly larger kits were series 2 and about 2 shillings and six pence, 15p today.......
You can still get the Jo Han 109 kit from Mistercraft. The latest release isn't as good though as the molds haven't been looked after very well and the decals are poorer in the latest release. Still, if you want to build this kit and not use one of the survivors, its an option for modellers. I'm thinking of getting the Mistercraft kit just for the nostalgia, because I never saw any of their plane kits in Australia as a young fella.
Airfix tractor in red plastic was the first model kit ever sold by Woolworths. The second kit was the golden hind sailing ship again by Airfix. Both sold in the old plastic bags with paperhangers for the rack in a shop/store, which also doubled as instructions inside.
OO scale is 1/72.6 - used by UK railway modelers. It uses the same gauge track - 16.5mm or 0.650" - as Continental European/American HO scale (1/87). This means the track gauge is incorrect - should be 18.83mm or 0.741 in", but the track is correct guage (er well, nearly - it's still a bit too small) for HO scale. Lord knows why it persists, really, as everyone apart from UK, Ireland (where it's used to represent 5'3" - not as wrong as the 4'8.25") and Australia model HO. Well, that's that made clear as mud.
Anyway, great vids on these vintage kits, I've built quite a few of them in my time :)
Airfix still do the Mk.1 Male Tank in 1/76th Scale under their Vintage Classic Branding - builds up nicely too.
These days you could build these kits in an hour, and spend days painting and detailing.........If they were not collectors items, I would be so up for that!!!!
Andy 00scale is 4mm per foot or as others have said 1/76 it is associated mainly with British outline railways. American railroads tend to be built to HO which Is 3.5 mm to the foot. A larger scale was used because British locomotives tend to be smaller and the large motors available at the time were difficult to fit in them. Perversely both 00 and HO fun on the same gauge track so arguably OO is less accurate
Double O scale is a train scale, so you can use with OO train scenery. That was a really early OO too

I found that same Jo-Han BF109 kit at an antique store for 1$. Unfortunately all of the parts were already cut off the sprue and loose, with several missing.

00 is a UK model railroad scale close to 1/76. These vehicles would make great flat car loads or scenery items.
OO is basically just 1/76. It's most commonly called OO by British rail modelers but i've noticed that when it comes to kits most people and companies just call it 1/76
Those Pyro kits were later owned by Lindberg, I don't know if they made the cross over after Round 2 got them though.
The Jo Han Bf 109 is actually not a bad kit for 72nd scale. A few faults, but overall accurate.
Given the quality of the kits at the time it would have been considered a good kit as not many would have recessed panel lines.
@@forgivemenot1 Yeap, the Matchbox 109E would have been a competitor as it came out the same year, but the JoHan looks to have more detail.
Ho in the United States is 1/87. Lionel made a pre war 00 scale in the us that was both 2 rail and a 3 rail version. Both were considered very realistic . But in the US after ww2, ho is what the scale modelers were doing and it caught on. The oo scale stayed in Europe and was slightly larger yet compel able so it stayed on. It is not an exact match to ho, but it was closer than 1/72.
Growing up, every model I did I built with my imagination running wild & accuracy was never a concern or even a consideration. I got into the space kits as it was happening. Good times. I had done 2 or 3 Jo- Han kits. I just rebuilt almost all Tom Daniel hot rods & it was fun using my knowledge now to do nostalgic kits. 1/3 of my stash are old kits from my childhood. I bear Revell no criticism or negativity. They are old friends much as dear old Aurora.
OO scale is a British railroading scale, it uses the same track gauge as HO scale but the bodies of the locomotives are larger. This is why many old Airfix armor kits are 1/76 instead of 1/72. Hornby still primarily works in OO scale.
Andy, been a fan awhile. I have been a CHiPs tv series fan since it’s inception. I have a vintage 1980 CHiPs motorcycle and been looking for someone to assemble it. I think it would be great for you channel. I have watch/assembled tanks and planes and watched your videos for inspiration, thank you. For some reason I have ruin one of the kit trying to assemble it, scared to ruin another kit.
You can do it Apex! Even if you make a mistake, there is usually a way to fix it. Big CHips fan myself. I ended up finding an Aoshima KZ-1000 motorcyle kit, which has CHiP's markings. Even got a signed photo from Larry Wilcox, which I will put on display with it when I build it. If you decide to build your bike kit and want someone online to build it with and work through the challenges, give me a shout. We can build out bike kits together online. Dan
Andy OO scale is equivalent to American HO scale. The OO scale is 1/76th scale which H.O. scale is 1/87th scale.
Which year marks vintage kits in the USA? I'm from Poland and we treat as vintage, kits made prior to 1989.
It’s probably been mentioned but Airfix’s OO scale is HO scale.
Slot car racing was a big deal where I lived in the early-mid 60's. I built quite a few of the 1/32 Pyro car bodies and mounted them on a Monogram motorized chassis. Didn't win races but turned a few heads at our local track when I'd run a Woody wagon or Mercedes SSK there.
00 is 1/87(??) Its the scale Hornby used - "Hornby Dubblo"

00 is a model railway scale and does equate to 1/76 scale. Typical of Airfix, most manufacturers use 1/72.
OO scale is indeed 1/76 and is still used as a British equivalent to HO scale (1/87) for model trains. Real British trains are smaller than US or European trains so the scale is different to produce similar sized electric trains. For example, this is the scale used by Hornby.
H0 in railways is a strange mix the wheels are one scale and the bodies are another it was supposed to be Half O gauge but to keep the trains on the track they made the wheels bigger.
The "Minitanks" or something like that I have are all OO. Looks like you said 1:76, I always thought HO and OO was same.
I had the 109g kit
Frog, Matchbox and Heller (and to a lesser degree Airfix) have produced kits of uncommon aircraft that are still the only game in town. I would much rather build a $5 kit that has the right general shape and maybe not the most amazing fit and details than pay $50 for a modern limited-run kit that requires just as much sanding and filling plus resin, PE, vacform canopy, etc. and looks no better on the shelf.

00 scale roughly translates to 1/87 scale used primarily in Great Britain slightly larger than the HO scale trains using 16.5mm track common in the U.S. and other places
In short these models could have been used on an HO scale train layout.
00 scale may refer to a train scale that the Brits used for their train sets.
And they still make those airfix kits

Last time we checked the JoHan tooling was in storage at a tooling shop in KY.....they have not been rerun because the clear tooling is missing. Any takers???
