  • In September 1987, prisoners held at the Peterhead Prison in Scotland rose up and seized control over one of the prison's buildings. In the unfolding unrest, one of the prison guards was taken as hostage. In the end, after five days of negotiations to bring an end to the crisis, the S.A.S. were authorised to intervene.

One of the prisoners involved, John Devine, tried to sue for £30,000, claiming the SAS used "excessive force" when they freed prison officer. It took the jury 30 minutes to dismiss the case. When questioned, the four SAS men gave evidence that "at no stage had Devine been beaten, apart from two initial blows with a baton on the arm and face to bring him under control". 🙂

I was on duty that night in the prison. Even we didn't know it was going to happen. Jackie Stewart, who I personally had a high regard for, took a horrendous amount of abuse. That has been well documented. But don't forget officer Bill Florence. He had been hurt so badly that the prisoners let him out earlier. They were so concerned that he might die from his injuries. A colleague and I were stationed in the Delta hall corridor (the white elephant for those in the know) and heard Bill screaming as they abused him severely. It's an experience that I will never forget.

This is why when I was 18 and a herion addict and I spent time in juvenile prisons and at 18 I got 3 years in adult prison this was in early 90s and being so young it was a rude awakening, the violence in prison is off the chain, I got used to it because you have no choice. But I vowed to never put myself in that situation ever again and I haven't, IV been off herion for since the 90s and IV not been in trouble since. It scared me straight. I was in with serial rapests and murdereres and you think yr tough till yr in the yard with real grown men that look like they are in the sas because they do weights all day and fight. When I first walked into the yard I felt like I was in kindigarten but full big pychopaths. No way. I saw stabbings and I wanted none of it. I can't believe I was so messed up at 15 I was on herion. It's hard for me to understand I'm nearly 50 and it's like a bad dream I still have dreams that I'm back in prison and I wake up and I feel so happy I can do what I want. I can go fishing or surfing or do anything I like it's wonderful to be free.

Also the Irish Rangers staged a hostage rescue in Liberia in 2004. They not only freed all hostages but NOT A SINGLE SHOT WAS FIRED because the captors shat their panties and either fled or surrendered. Keep in mind, the captors had AKs and similar weapons. It was covered on this channel too.

That quote at the end really sums it up. I worked at a prison here in the US where inmates initiated a disturbance and took over their dormitory. The whole thing lasted only twenty minutes or so. I was part of the armed response that quelled the situation along with six other officers. Thankfully no one was seriously hurt save for some bad bruises from impact munitions and a lot of burned eyes from OC grenades. The population is always ready to tussle until they’re met with greater force. The cruel reality and ugly truth is there are some who only understand arguments made this way. We were lucky. Most don’t realize the situations these officers are placed in when they go to work each day. The dorm I mentioned housed around 150 inmates with one officer to supervise and it remains that way even now.

I know my father was part of it and multiple of his friends it took me 25 years or more before I found out his friend was in the SAS and it took me another decade to come to the conclusion my father was.
It is true, they never talk about it even to family. I knew he was in the military as a child and a prison officer later but it never clicked until later in life when I looked back at the multiple weapons we had in the home and he had a gun by his bed
I will never know what he did back then as he walked out when I was 19 years old after divorcing my mother but he never bothered with us being me and my sister.
But I do know a few stories from his friend as we had barbecues in the back garden when I was young just things like " we got in a door thicker than that with 3 guys on the other side, just take the door off that way " while making a booming noise after but no one uses to continue the stories. It's like everyone knows what he meant but never added. Lots of small things over the years like this with zero detail just short sentences once in a Blue Moon.

As a result the Met Police asked the SAS to test their security and not get caught and no violence to be used. They agreed and the senior police officers did not tell the officers guarding Buck Hse and the SAS entered over walls and various other entrances and left notes where they had been which were later found by senior officers who were gob smacked. Security has now been tightened even more.

As he tells it, they were told that 'Special Forces' would attempt to breach their defences and carry out an attack, or attempt to gain intelligence about the camp.
The camp went on full alert and for three days nothing happened. On the third day, the exercise was declared over 'End-Ex?' and only then did they hear a bell ring and a lone figure made his descent from a large tree on the base. Yes, he was an SAS trooper and yes - he had been hiding in the tree for over three days whilst the exercise was going on! Whether 'gathering intelligence' or being used to 'remove' high-level operatives, the reality of what he COULD have done - had the situation been real - wasn't lost on anyone! And - just so that you know - they reckon the SBS are even 'WORSE' than the SAS! :-)...

In the U.S. the military can't be used as a police force. The National Guard can because it is state controlled not federal. We would have used state and local SWAT, and upon request FBI HRT. If needed the National Guard can be ordered by the governor to support the police at any point. Just pointing out the difference between the UK and US

    • @JohnDoe-tx8lq
      @JohnDoe-tx8lq 2 года назад +30

But the US Police Force is highly militarised and the UK doesn't have a separate National Guard, though it has smaller SWAT style teams. Every US officer is armed, and every department has access to Military grade machine guns, protection and armoured personnel carriers. For dealing with a hostage situation like this in the US, the real difference between Police, National Guard and the Army is the politics. I would suggest the US can and does use more 'military power' within its own borders than the UK,
...I'll add this edit, obviously different countries with different problems, but:
US - Deaths from Police shootings: 2.85 deaths per 1 million population
UK - Deaths from Police shootings: 0.05 deaths per 1 million population - and none of those where by the regular police officers.
So the fact that "in the U.S. the military can't be used as a police force." is kind of irrelevant.

I admit I never heard or read anything on Mrs Thatcher side. Only in the special forces book/documentary community
And you also have history. The fact is the SAS were never employed in any such operation since.

    • @richardpatton2502

@@cucuawe465 the British do have those kind of special police units. And already had them back then.
But we have to go back a little.
It all started with the Iranian embassy siege. Operation Nimrod.
The British intelligence realized the embassy was a reinforced building, bars on windows, reinforced doors, thick walls and windows etc.
This requires what is referred to as an “explosive entry”.
Police units were not prepared or trained for this kind of entry so the SAS were given operational control over the police.
More details were at play but this is the main reason behind the use of the SAS.
Mrs Thatcher was so impressed that, naturally, she understood these are professionals that can get the job done. As I said before she referred to them as “my boys”
So when the time came to use force and rescue another hostage she didn’t think twice and called on “her boys” again. Even though special police units were available and, possibly, better prepared for this kind of non-lethal action.
But she admired the regiment and they didn’t let her down before so she went with what she knew.
I can only imagine the faces of the SAS troopers when they were given batons instead of MP5s…
This is just a very basic explanation. Many more things were at play here, some of which we don’t even know about

The unquestionably the most elite of any and all special forces on the planet , ordinary looking men , blend into any environment, hardly noticed , the stereotypical grey man , they’re not bouncing around with tight T-shirts on exposing their leg sized muscles like some special ops you see , these guys are elitist at virtually anything and everything, a small team of men , wether it’s reconnaissance patrol a fighting patrol or something else , can and will strike with such force , speed and intent that even the best of enemies won’t even know what’s happening, until they’re either killed captured or tied in knots, the Mention of the SAS to anyone committing an act that would generate interest by the SAS soon have these people asking for their mummy and reflecting on their poor decision to be naughty , if you fuck with them , then your either a possible candidate for selection or you have peanut butter for brains

One extremely brave, well trained man, love to think he's scottish! I've heard many are, proud of them all.

My Dad was born near to Peterhead, just north of it, he remembered what happened and said the prisoners were protesting because of the conditions they were living in. Before the hostage taking the inmates would "slop out" by smothering there shi*e all over the walls in protest and the guards were made to clean it up. Nasty stuff eh, this went on for months.
Edit: the SAS used CR gas not CS gas, the warden that was told didn't know the difference, CR (dibenzoxazepine) is a LOT stronger than CS gas, "you are temporarily blinded and your lungs begin to feel like they have been filled with water" CS is quite bad- your nose, throat and eyes burn but with a bit of adrenaline you would experience you could pull through, CR is a different story, you can't even stand up. Within a couple of moments you're on your arse. "it didn't matter how tough you were, you'd end up being carried out of the room by a couple of guys.
"One of the 4 teams went to the parapet and posted (a) CR (grenade) onto the roof" This incapacitated the prisoners who were rounded up.
CR gas NOT CS gas. Check your facts dude.

Iranian Embassy, Falklands and this inciteful operation really redefined the UK. Peterhead was real hardman's prison not after trained troops and not many restored order.
