It is from the famous performance when Galina Vishnevskaya was singing Liu in the opera "Truandot" with Franco Corelli and Birgit Nilsson.
Teatro alla Scala, Milano 1964.
Fantastic performance on everyone's part. Vishnevskaya had a remarkable life. She went though the harrowing Leningrad blockade as a teenager and then she sang in music halls for years. But she found a proper teacher and had a great opera career, both in Russia and the West. Her autobiography is a page turner.

In her autobiography, GV writes that she wanted to sing the final note of this aria pianissimo as directed by Puccini, but she was told that the Italian audiences expected a fortissimo. She decided to hold the note pianissimo and only at the very end to crescendo to a fortissimo. She was told that the effect in the opera house was like that of a whistling train emerging from a tunnel.

What a joy to hear this in correct score pitch. Almost all other RUclips postings are transferred a half tone too high. ANY singer (even The Great Ones) sounds terrible when his/her voice is played back faster than it was recorded. If you can't get the pitch right (this post is perfect), DON'T POST. You're only doing singers a horrible disservice.
If his nerves had been stronger and would have sustained a fully flighted international career, would Corelli have been regarded as "Caruso's Heir" after the untimely death of Björling? I think so. He was truly magnificent.
Dans ces mémoires, Vichnevskaia en parle, de cette Turandot. Comme un choc de titans, et à chacun de se débrouiller pour survivre à la confrontation! Pas question de faire des pianissimi, quand bien même Puccini les a écrit! Ecoutez 2.13....

Bob Smth, Zacaria was more than passable,compare him to someone Climbming Everest he was just reaching the Summit,just a few feet from the top just failing to be able to plant a flag.But my G-D he was excellent,no comparison to today's would be.This is only the opinion of a person who has loved Opera most of his time on this Planet. Rene 89 yrs and still listening,trying to appreciate the current Artists.

I only hear one person booing, and he might be a paid heckler at that. Zaccaria is reminiscent of Pinza here.

I really hated the continuous change of tempi - and such fast to slow extremes. Toady's audiences want more realism in opera, and that usually means a faster tempo to mirror actual emotions. But some of the slow tempi were actually interesting if I could hear it in its entirety.
As usual, Vishnevskaya sings with an old woman's timbre and exaggerated phrasing. Как и обычно, у Вишневской "старушечий" тембр и неделикатная утрированная фразировка.
Не слышу ничего старушечьего, но техника у неё не самая лучшая, хотя именно здесь голос изумительно звучит. Тогда многие утрировали, включая Корелли. Другая манера пения была, очевидно.
Ведь пошло от Нестеренко и Образцовой, артистов Большого и агентов НКВД, что Вишневская плохая певица.
@@tatyanashaideman9639 Такие подробности деятельности этих двоих были мне неизвестны, но весьма вероятно, иначе ведь куда ж было деваться. Образцова как меццо не могла не воспользоваться случаем пройтись по сопрано. Знамо знамо...
@@wagnergalore5866 Когда был юбилей Вишневской, она долго просила Демидову прочесть стихи Ахматовой о голосе Вишневской. Демидова долго отнекивалась, тк дружит с Маквалой , а Маквала дружила с Образцовой. Хотя Демидова постоянно на своих поэтических вечерах использует бахиану в исполнении Вишневской.
