Awesome comparison, Alan! 👍 The value of the motion boom is undeniable. On another note, how do you think the maxsound plus would compare to the charge 5 for low level listening? A Sony that sounds warm? Nah man never 😂 You got it backwards. Sony actually has a cold crisp bright sound with emphasis on the highs.. JBL actually sounds warm with deeper mids and lows. Which sounds better? It’s actually a matter of taste. I love JBL’s sound signature. I think there highs are loud enough to not sound over bearing and the lows and mids hit hard enough to not drown out their not so bright highs.
The JBL is actually quite nice, but for the price the Boom is the one. Often times I'd be listening blind on these tests and some parts of songs the Boom was better, some the JBL, but when the JBL shined it shined nicely. I just have personally a limited use case for speakers but want something that outshines my old Motion Qs, and the Motion Booms do it well. Great bang for buck. I prefer the Motion Boom more than the Soundcore party speakers for overall sound.
About the XB43 sounding muffled: reduce the "mids" slider in the EQ, and it's gonna improve. There is possibly a bug in the EQ w.r.t. that slider (on FW 38.00 at least), since setting it high, to me at least, results in a sound that seems deficient in mid-tones.
@@alanrossreviews I bet they didn't quite update the EQ code to account for the crossover. The "mids" slider is probably routing midtones to the tweeters, hurting clarity - meanwhile, midtones to the woofers are uncontrolled, or controlled by the bass slider.
Took apart mine today; turns out, the situation is far worse than I thought. There's no crossover, the tweeters are pretty much just for show. I tested the speaker with the tweeters disconnected - virtually no change in sound. Then I disconnected the woofers, and only plugged in the tweeters - barely anything audible (a very quiet and bassless version of the original track, and not at all like what a proper low-pass filter would do). Finally, I took out the main PCB, and traced the connection to the drivers. The tweeters are directly connected to the woofers on the negative side, and through a 1.8μF capacitor on the positive side. That's 8.84 ohms of reactance even at 10kHz, and over 25 ohms at 3.5kHz, essentially connected parallel to a 4 ohm -woofer- full-range driver, in essence. This also means, since the woofers are fed by a YDA174 amp, with a maximum sustained output of 30W, and burst output of 40W, that the XB43 can only be called no more than a 30W speaker in good conscience. Sony did not fail to disappoint with this one. EDIT: I may just be an idiot. I completely missed 2x100μH of inductance in line with each woofer. So it is a proper passive crossover (as much as a passive crossover can be called "proper"), but still only a 30W speaker.
@@NetRolller3D thanks for the info. so the takeway is? what frequencies are the tweeters actually playing? when you say it is a proper crossover the woofers are still full range right outside of bass? so it cannot be said to be a proper crossover i would have thought if the woofer and tweeter are still covering the same range at the high end. the tweeter your saying only has a filter fed from the woofer?
@@alanrossreviews The capacitor & inductor values seem correct for a 3.5kHz passive crossover assuming a 4ohm woofer and 32ohm tweeter, but there's definitely still quite a bit of sound coming from the woofers even at 4kHz. Maybe the speaker impedances aren't actually 4/32.
Great comparison, thank you... I like charge 5 more cause of size-performance criteria... Usually C5 performs quite nice and balanced. Only issue is the price of C5
Tested the JBL extreme 3, Charge 5 and XB 43 at Mediamarkt. I must say the difference of the smaller and larger JBL wasn't that big. The JBL has alot of bass but lacking in mids and has a high pitch treble that left my ears tired from It. The Sony has a much more musical If not more relaxing tone response IRL. What was surpising was the sound spread oattern! The JBL had 40degree sound cone before it dropped of by 50%, whereas the Sony had a 90degree sound cone. So the Sony is better for entertaining a few friends on a blanket in a park I would say. The JBLs bass is a bit much in the park aswell 😅
@@alanrossreviews I'll see If I can find It somewhere.. I tried a haul of BT speakers last summer and wasn't pleased with amyone from Oluv's Gadgets top 5 here on RUclips.. I actually tried Charge 4 and Anker Motion+ and had to send both back. The Anker hurt my ears so bad with the ear piercing Treble.. I like the Onyx 5 though but the speaker format is so inpractical. Maybe i can saw off the handle on the motion boom and add a leather strap instead hahahah 😅
The charge 5 looks so pretty, i really wanna get it, but the motion boom sounds soooo good 😅 well my budget is 100 euros so.. What should I doooo Alan?
Finally got my Boom. Compared to my JBL charge 4, Minirig 2.1, JBL partybox 100, Sony XB43, JBL xtreme 2 and a few others. Im utterly impressed with the motion boom: that deep bass is something else. For long term listen, I'll grab the Minirig but for some fun listen, the boom but partybox for outdoors or party setting.
Thanks for another great review,Alan. What would you say is the best stereo setting for a small room? which speakers in case portability is rarely needed? Thanks.
@@alanrossreviews medium loud, there are houses behind my house so I don't want to go jbl extreme/motion boom loud. Strong but smooth bass, stereo surround feeling, its for my bedroom which is small - medium size, playing mostly epic music (two steps from hell and alike)
65 quid for the Motion Boom atm. Seems a solid deal. Ironically i can hear the Boom's Bass is the best overall.. on some big Sony Xtra Bass headphones ho ho ho
First impression with my Jbl charge 5, a fairly clear and neutral sound without impressing in any way. Then I set an external equalizer (10 bands), turned on dolby atmos and started listening the "Two steps from hell live at Wacken Festival" concert. It was wow, the sound quality is impressive for a mono speaker under 1 kg. The speaker suddenly became much more dynamic. Jbl products always sound better on live music than on studio albums. To get a quality sound, the speaker must be set according to the type of music you listen to. Jbl eq in the app is quite rudimentary.
This is fine if you just listen to one genre. Often though i find it doesn't work out if you listen to multi genres. But if you are just adapting it to your own ears and room thats different, then it works all round.
@@alanrossreviews Yes, I adapt the eq for each musical genre. I usually listen to rock and metal. I don't think the perfect speaker exists just to plug and play. It's like a concert without FOH Engineer sounds flat without life.
Thanks for your awesome reviews!!! Like your channel! I was about to buy 2 x JBL Charge 5 to have some nice stereo sound. After watching your reviews I decided to go with 1 x Motion Boom instead!!
Great comparison video. I don't know much about speakers but I'm really learning alot from watching your videos. I really love the xb 43 because i like punchy bass but not deep bass, idk if I'm getting this right or not but i don't like the kind of bass in subwoofers, so the xb 43 lacking deep bass is actually perfect for me. Wish it'd go louder for the size tho.
Ignore the price and focus on sound quality, Which one would you choose between Motion boom and Xb43? I usually listen to Pop, EDM and some chill-out music. Need your help!
Hey Alan, do you think you could review the UE Hyperboom? I know people haven't been a big fan of UE in the past but we were all pleasantly surprised by the Wonderboom.
@@alanrossreviews So, which one? :) I am considering getting another Flip 4 with my Charge 4 (my previous Flip 4 died), they sound so good together (Charge gives the meat and Flip the extra mids/highs).
I know I'm late, but although you get Stereo with 2 Flip 5's, they dont have tweeters - so the high's would sound easily better on the Charge 5. The bass would probably be identical but a slight edge to the dual Flip 5's
I wanna buy one for my room, not that big, mostly would listen to it on like 50 %. Which one should i go for? I mostly listen to hiphop Would love a respond!
@@alanrossreviews thanks for the quiz respond! I ordered the motion boom yesterday, mainly because its 70 bucks cheaper than the c5. Hope i‘m happy with my choice when it a arrives!
I have a pair of Sony xb40’s. Many people have commented that the older Xb40 has a better sound signature over the xb43. The only drawback back with my Sony xb40 is that the barrel charger requires an ac plug. I had wished that Sony would have used usb instead. I have a Sony Bluetooth speaker(2013) with the first liquid radiator and the signature is quite awesome. I believe it is 40watts plugged in. Seems like Sony lately has been just pushing out non offensive products. Pricy middle of the road products. I recently bought a JBL bb3 and a flip5 mainly for the deepest bass. We’ll see how long these JBL’s will last.
@@alanrossreviews yes sir I agree. I must say the bb3 and flip combo really bumps when pushed. I’m a truck driver and the company has no radios installed in delivery trucks so I have to haul my own sound system in daily. Good day and god bless.
Hello Alan have you ever had a chance to test the Sony XB-501G ? That speaker is pretty unique its a single mid/bass driver and 2 tweeters set up this speaker is truly impressive on the low end it would be an awesome battle against something like JBL extreme 3 Anker Motion boom even the Onyx Studio 6 yes its really that good cheers.
@@alanrossreviews Actually if you use the sony app and play with embedded eq you can make it really "sparkle" I own lots of nice speakers and believe me if you get your hands on one you will more than likely really enjoy it. I listen to lots of music with acoustic guitars and they sound so natural but it will handle anything like hip hop or dance or rock its just a really good all around speaker. Oh and its also google capable so you can have 1 or 2 or 100 playing at the same time its truly something nice.
Hey, I just ordered charge 5 but after seeing reviews I think of returning it. I will mostly use it for my PC so the volume will be probably around 30-40%. What do you recommend guys ? I thought that clarity and good bass for low volumes will convince me but now I dont know :(

Hi, I bought the Motion Boom. But, it's really quiet. :O I'm testing it against a JBL Charge Essentials 2 and I would say it's significantly quieter. Not even the bass does't hold up. I've tried it on both an iPhone and a Samsung with Soundcore app. I've updated the firmware to 0.43 and still the same. Am I missing something?
Hi ! I have FLip 6 GG and its great ... i bought another flip 6 - CS version - its horrible ... I want to but Charge 5 (maybe 2 for stereo) . Sir, tell me which version is the best , please.
Is the motion boom actually waterproof? My first unit had water inside of it after I tested it under some water out of the shower (just some sprinkle from the top) and with my replacement now I don't actually want to try it anymore 😂
@@alanrossreviews Ok seems pretty weird to me. When I shook the motion boom I heard the water splashing inside of it and after I set it on my shelf for a night there was a puddle. Anyways it's a great sounding speaker and I don't regret buying it. Thanks for your valuable comparisons :)

It really doesn't matter anymore...trust me, its not the same story with the flip 5s. I've tested all versions! The tl & tt are the same speakers, same goes for the nd & nt. But they all sound basically the same on their latest firmware.
I just got the Sony XB43. It's not a great speaker for it's size. My JBL Extreme has a warmer bass sound. I spent $200 on this Sony and am very disappointed.
Sorry, I'm using a translator. I am from Argentina. Here there is almost no information about Jbl. Only 2 versions are sold here, both manufactured in March 2021 from what I saw on the box.
And very narrow sound but you notice it less at lower volumes where for me its strong point is, the sheer clarity without pushing volumes. 👍
@@alanrossreviews Now i am so happy that i couldn't buy Motion Boom :D
I prefer C5 instead of Boom...Thank you for your comparison...
Soundcore motion boom is expensive here in Nigeria, just bought mine $136. thanks for the video.
well still a decent speaker.
The JBLs bass is a bit much in the park aswell 😅
id rather loisten to the motion boom (not plus) than xb43 and x3. the charge 5 as portable travel speaker i really like.
Maybe i can saw off the handle on the motion boom and add a leather strap instead hahahah 😅
the handle holds the speaker together so not possible 😭
I found the soundcore have more sounds! One of the sounds is losing from another two speakers. That one ts tc ts tc ts xD

What a let down by Sony.
The Srs Xb3 was a little montser.
the older sonys were definitely better

i am trying 😁
The charge 5 looks so pretty, i really wanna get it, but the motion boom sounds soooo good 😅 well my budget is 100 euros so..
What should I doooo Alan?
well charge 5 smaller and more knockable while motion boom has great deep bass for size and price that you wont get from the charge 5.

Finally got my Boom. Compared to my JBL charge 4, Minirig 2.1, JBL partybox 100, Sony XB43, JBL xtreme 2 and a few others.

So hard to say because of variables in taste, room acoustics etc. Even how loud does it need to get?

getting 2 booms & playing in stereo👌🏻
Heaven 😝
Sony xb 43 (LDAC, Tweeters, ESTEREO, input 3.5)>> all jbl flip & chargue (sbs mono)

Thanks for your awesome reviews!!! Like your channel! I was about to buy 2 x JBL Charge 5 to have some nice stereo sound. After watching your reviews I decided to go with 1 x Motion Boom instead!!
and of course you can get two motion booms for one charge 5 and still get really great stereo.
Wish it'd go louder for the size tho.
yup you described it well, sub bass being a different type to punchy upper bass. and xb43 lacks sub type bass.
Ignore the price and focus on sound quality, Which one would you choose between Motion boom and Xb43?
I usually listen to Pop, EDM and some chill-out music. Need your help!
motion boom 👍 pair for same money as xb43 depending on deals and country.
Hey Alan, do you think you could review the UE Hyperboom? I know people haven't been a big fan of UE in the past but we were all pleasantly surprised by the Wonderboom.

I am considering getting another Flip 4 with my Charge 4 (my previous Flip 4 died), they sound so good together (Charge gives the meat and Flip the extra mids/highs).
I know I'm late, but although you get Stereo with 2 Flip 5's, they dont have tweeters - so the high's would sound easily better on the Charge 5. The bass would probably be identical but a slight edge to the dual Flip 5's

We’ll see how long these JBL’s will last.
its been downhill since the xb40 and xb30
@@alanrossreviews yes sir I agree. I must say the bb3 and flip combo really bumps when pushed. I’m a truck driver and the company has no radios installed in delivery trucks so I have to haul my own sound system in daily. Good day and god bless.
Ordered a motion boom should come in today
enjoy! 😊
Hey Alan, how does the motion boom compare the Sony xb40. Does the motion boom have significantly deeper bass and how much louder does it go?
i havent compared them directly but yes the boom goes places im pretty sure the xb40 never went. the boom is bigger of course.
Hello Alan have you ever had a chance to test the Sony XB-501G ? That speaker is pretty unique its a single mid/bass driver and 2 tweeters set up this speaker is truly impressive on the low end it would be an awesome battle against something like JBL extreme 3 Anker Motion boom even the Onyx Studio 6 yes its really that good cheers.
quite muddy im told?

I thought that clarity and good bass for low volumes will convince me but now I dont know :(
Charge 5 is ok, what's putting you off?
@@alanrossreviews Mostly the bass. I haven't heard neither of these speakers in real so I can't really tell but I am seeing really different opinions regarding the sound quality on lower volumes. (30-50%).

Hey man please review head to head the Soundcore Motion Boom and the Alec Lansing Mix 2.0. The Altec has a huge light show.
One question, have you tested the new NT and TT models (CHARGE 5H AND CHARGE 5J)? Which one did you find the best in terms of sound quality?
no i only have the tl version.
1 motion boom vs 2 charge 3 - who wins in sound quality?
charge 3 simply cant match the bass of the boom whether one or two of them.
I get for the waterproof part and the sound clarity. I have a kid I like to go to the beach and pool so... are the others waterproof? And their marketing. They do have ones with LEDs but I don't know if those are water proof and it's a bit more too
they are all waterproof, only xb43 has lights.
Would a combination of the motion boom and the motion plus be the perfect sound to get and play together?
not really, the boom just needs the wide angle tweeters of the plus.
what microphone do you record on?
Motion Boom material looks bad, Motion Plus material is firmer, hope they would improve the next generation of Motion Boom.
but how does it sound is the bottom line?

over the long term maybe the xb43 but its way heavier.
With custom eq on the motion boom, can it be as good as the jbl charge 5 ?
For sure, but the c5 is very clear at low volume so this is the only area i would say the c5 can have the edge on the boom, its a lot smaller of course.
