- Yeehaw!!!! I photographed Lance Armstrong, Jan Ullrich, Christian Bruyneel and our local guide Paddy descending Sa Calobra in Mallorca during THEMOVE Mallorca cycling camp Sept 28th, 2023. This was our third year in Mallorca, so I knew this “Queen Stage” was definitely happening again and so I wanted to capture my perspective working from the moto on video to share this year. I love to follow behind and capture images, because it’s a cool perspective and you feel like you are right there with them and we can keep up (hopefully) the entire time. It’s crazy how fast we all descend especially with the cars and busses on the roads. Thank GOD for my moto pilot snd good friend Gerald. He is a retired French National Guard moto pilot and worked 20+ Tour de France races (where I met him in 2004) and still works with photographers at the TDF and other big cycling races, so he is super skilled with cyclists and traffic. I can sit, stand, twist, hang off to the side, yell commands while photographing and he does such an incredible job allowing me to be in the position to get the images and most importantly all the while keeping us safe…that is until he runs over my ankle 🤦♀️ “She’s ok…she’s fine” 😂
What a rush it was and my heart started to race again watching the footage. I wanted to share the unedited video with you so you could see the whole descent start to finish. When you see my Sony body with the 16-35mm and mounted on the hot shoe go by my side and it looks like I’m not photographing the guys for a bit, that is when I am photographing with my other Sony body that has the 70-200mm on it. Next year I’ll have a GoPro on both cameras. I always work with two Sony bodies with two different focal lengths bevause as you can see there is no time to change lenses.
I showed this video to my boys because they don’t get to see me working very often. They were really impressed and when I was going to stop the video before I turned the camera on myself because I looked like I had been run over by one of those tour busses, they said “Mom, you are working…who cares, be proud” They are right…I am proud.
