    Frank is so much more than a "shredder" or inventor of sweep - he's a thought, rythmic, melodic player who always plays exactly the right thing. Hat off.

      @@anish3183 No one does what Gambale does. Les Paul and Ritchie Blackmore did mini short phrases but not anything like the sheets of sound all sweeping. Gambale now calls his technique "Gambale Sweep Picking" and that way there's no more controversy. Sam B. FG Admin

    So many guitar experts on this page. Guys that eat Yngwie for lunch and Holdsworth for dinner. I'd pay a thousand bucks to see you all line up on stage and stand next to Frank Gambale and show him how it's done and then take questions with answers like: "y'know, Michael Rabin was all technique." and "Bach didn't know the first thing about composition."

    He's not a gimmick player, he owns his style. Music is all about finding your voice and Gambale likes to sweep pick, so why should he change that? There are different skills involved with sweep picking as to shredding or squealing or whatever the hell else you choose to appreciate. He already proves that he can play any incredibly difficult melody and is a genius composer, so who really cares if he's partial to sweeping in his improv?

    For me, I bought just about every fusion player album I could get my hands on. I like Al, but I liked Jan, Anthony Jackson, Gadd, Lenny as much. I still break out his first solo album, which I actually think is his best out of the bunch. I saw him perform opening up for Weather Report (Jaco), for the Black Market or it might have been the Heavy Weather Album, I forget. But most fusion albums after the 80's started because smooth jazz. ARGH!

    I've seen DiMeola twice with RTF in the 70's, as well as his own band in the 70's when he was headling fairly big gigs (5,000+) and I'm comparing Gambale to DiMeola, and DiMeola is second to McLaughlin, so the pecking order is McLaughlin, DiMeola, and then MAYBE Gambale in terms of playing fusion, but there are other lessor known players I would consider to be as good if not better in actual playing style as a side man fusion player. Ray Gomez comes to mind.

    So, how many concerts did you attend back in the early to mid 70's when the fusion era was happening?
    I saw the version of RTF do their reunion and though it was great they got back together, they came close to what they originally did, but it's kind of tough for even them to play like they did back in the 70's. Youth and that rawness they had is part of it. Back in the 70's, they were in their 20's & 30's, and that youthful energy/fire/internal drive that made it what it was.

  • @Oneness100
    @Oneness100 11 лет назад

    From my perspective, RTF in the mid 70's, was a 10, the reunion was about 6.5 to 7, maybe an 8 at best, because they lacked the energy, they were playing the songs how they are written, but they lacked that fire which brought down the performances, plus some of the songs were actually played slower and it almost sounded like they were "phoning in" their performances. This to me is about a 5 to 5.5 in comparison. Maybe I'm too critical for you, but that's how it appears to me.

    @kerryrock1 I have to disagree and also agree, Frank and Al have as much heart as Bill, but they all have different voices; with Frank, his phrasing does come from listening to horn players and using a technique which allows him to play very angularly as well as as fluidly at high speeds; like a horn player. But then, not all horn players play the same, look at say David Sanbourn and Ravi Coltrane which horn players do you mean?

    First off, I like Chick, Lenny, Jean Luc Ponty, and practically all of the original fusion guys that came out of the fusion era, when this stuff was brand new. I've got all the albums, seen them in concert when it was fresh and new. Unfortunately, it's not close to how it was done back then. They don't have the same "spark" they had, then when you get someone that ISN'T the original player on the albums trying to pass this off, isn't doing it for me.

    I don't know if you are aware, but Gambale is also considered smooth jazz, which is nothing but commercialized instrumental music for novices that don't understand, study or listen to REAL jazz. Sorry, but Gambale couldn't put a headlining solo band together and tour concert halls around the world, which I kind of feel is mandatory these days. I see him more as a side man for second level fusion bands. He's taking DiMeola's position because DiMeola has a credible, successful solo career.

    • @alberthaust4542
      @alberthaust4542 6 лет назад

      Di Meola and Mclaughlin got their careers going in the 1970s. If they started out when Gambale did so, they would not of had as much success. If you spoke to Di Meola you would find that his audience sizes are much smaller now than they used to be. In the U.S. he has gone from concert size gigs to the club scene.
      I like both Di Meola and Gambale a lot. In my opinion, for this song, Di Meola's approach seems to work better. This song has Latin and Classical influences, which are more in line with Di Meola's approach than Gambales.

    Gambale using advanced sweep picking to play stuff Holdsworth can't even play is not cliché. Listen to "Truth in Shredding" where Holdsworth & Gambale play on the same tracks.You might not like Gambale's style or think he's too dry, but you can't accuse him of being cliché anymore than you can accuse Holdsworth or McLaughlin. McLaughlin still plays plenty of Mahavishnu type runs he was playing 40 years ago but his nonlinear, polyrhythmic approach outside of bebop clichés makes it sound fresh

    For me, only a few artists were spitting out really good albums in the 70's. I think once these guys started to over produce their CDs, do mostly over dub with ProTools, that's when the music scene was messed up. Some of the great players started selling out and then the next crowd of players are being brought up where they have chops for days, but can't play anything meaningful and they don't play WITH the others, they just solo for themselves and they kind of don't play with the melody line.

    Not all music is built on cliches. McLaughlin doesn't play cliches, Al might every once in a while, but he's not as bad as others. I have not really paid attention to Al since his first few albums. Those are his best, when his work went downhill, I stopped listening. I might check them out over time, but I liked his first three or four albums. He's does have a weird mannerism on stage and he's not delved into jazz as much as I think he should have.
