What a great video. The tip on the finger tightening method with the ratchet is great. I remember back in the day doing my first spark plug change…changing the plugs on my jeep and following the torque spec with a torque bar and one plug snapped and put me in a huge problem spot. My cousin who is a mechanic saved my ass with some specialty tools to get out the broken plug. When I told him I used a torque bar he looked at me like i was nuts. Explained it’s not necessary and just snug them up. Lesson learned. This finger technique is fantastic

Thank you for the video. I was apprensive about trying this myself. I was worried about the difficulty of getting to the back plugs. I am so glad I tried this repair because it was super easy. Make sure you have a magnetic socket and a couple of extensions and you are set. Hardest thing for me was disconnecting the wiring harness from the coils. Do it yourself and save yourself between 100 and 200 dollars
this is exactly what i faced, coil wire harness and getting the spark plug out, spark-plug was very securely tight - took a little bit of strength to unscrew it, when I tried to sit the coil back it too require little strength to press/set it so the coil screw can mount ( this back side #2 plug)
Thank you so much for such a detailed video..Wish I saw this video before getting fleeced at the dealer (Capital Honda in San Jose)..took the Odyssey when the CEL came on and was told I need to change all the 6 spark plugs and coils for $3200..When I said no, they forced me to have one spark plug/coil changed for $568...never going back to those cheaters again

Are you changing the coils or plugs? Don't waste your money on unnecessary things, if the o2 sensors are good (no CEL) then leave it alone. I have a video on the upstream sensors.
MrRangerZr1 my sister brought the van and the check engine light was on and I check it's and the codes came back oxygen sensors and fuel cap. The van was sitting for a long time and it's looked good so we decided to get it. But I'm going to do a tune up on it I already changed the oil and air folder. But I thought I had to buy ignition coils when you're changing them. But you said I don't have to change them unless the ignition coil is bad. I have to changed all 4 oxygen sensors the lower control arms and the trailing arm bushings and the front brake rotors and brake pads and the rear brake rotors and pads and the rear lateral arms cause one is bent
I should add be careful what you find on Amazon, there are some knock-offs that are being sold are OEM NGK plugs on there. I ordered mine from Rock Auto as well. They were $26/ea. at the dealership, ~$9/ea. at RA
Good vid, Odyssey engine is easy, some cars the intake manifold must come off to get the back three cylinders. Only one "non-positive" comment, torque value for spark plug and use of torque wrench would have been nice, although not needed.
Car running well even after 120, 000 on original NGK spark plugs but I decided it was time for a change. After I changed the spark plugs, the check engine light came on and was idling rough. What could have happened? I put back the old plugs and had same problem. I removed the battery several times and finally got it back to original state. Sort of scared trying to replace the plugs at this point. Any suggestions?
@@MrRangerZr1 I took car to a mechanic and they told me all the spark plugs were misfiring. Was told not to use the pocket coin gap tool because it messed up the platinum tips. I rechecked the gaps on the old spark plugs, (no manipulation whatsoever) but seems like the gap tool still messed up the platinum tips. No need to check the gaps because factory gaps the spark plugs well ( probably okay to check with a better gap tool)

Mike B code be plugs or ignition coils. Cylinders 1-3 is in the back and 4-6 is in the front. If you’re getting #2 misfire, switch coil from #3 to #2 and #2 to #3. If misfire switches now to #3, you ruled out a bad coil. With 100k+ miles, change all of the plugs.
I was able to replace the 3 spark plugs in front . Was able to disconnect and remove coils for 1 and 2 but the extension (6 in.) wouldn’t fit. Too long to get it in the hole, not enough space. With #3, I couldn’t even disconnect the wiring from the coil and this is the cylinder w/ multiple misfires. Somewhat frustrated here.
You did it wrong; you're supposed to stand around talking nonstop and spend most of your time awkwardly repositioning the camera while walking on extremely loud gravel. This video is too efficient, convenient, and professional.

Technician (254 miles away from my home) he said I need to replace the Spark Plugs and Timing Belt since it was 118k Miles on it. Well I got my car and started way back home and since then and today my car is hesitating each time I put some accelerator. each time means even I stop on lights or changing lanes or trying to push the car. what could be the check points I have to check.. he said he used all Honda Parts TRUE/FALSE God Knows..
Love the meat and potatoes approach, man. Respectfully, get a torque wrench. Even the cheapest ones are better than guessing with a standard ratchet. ✌

Any trick to getting the back right ingnition coil out? I'm considering removing that hose that blocks pulling it out.

Fabian Rossini you don’t have to change the ignition coils. Replace them as they go bad. Use only OEM.

You do it by feel. Do the front plugs first, you'll then be able to figure out how to do the rear ones.

What did you use the dielectric grease on and anti-seize lube?
Dielectric grease on the end of the ignition coils and anti-seize on the spark plug threads. Very small amount needed.

NGK plugs are $10 each on amazon. I found a seller on ebay that was selling 6 OEM NGK plugs for $47 shipped!
I just ordered the NGK oem's for my 2008 EX-L from Rock Auto. They were around $46 shipped.

Is that Cracked around the nut? I overtight mine too and gave me cracked around the end. Was wondering if i need to change the whole ignition coil?

Checked all my plugs today and they were on there hand tight. Lol tightened up and it idled much better.

Loose connection somewhere. Make sure the connectors click when you reconnect them.

That's a excellent choice. Just change the ATF frequently and you're set. If you have the VCM system, disable it.

So you did the timing belt service? Spark plug and timing belt service needs to be done no later than 105k miles.
MrRangerZr1 yes I did replace timing belt and sparks but after that the van hesitate after a dead stop it’s slow or sluggish acceleration.
