Musashi Shirakawa Dragon Katana: Sword Re-Reviews, Episode 6

Hi everybody, Welcome to my Re-Review of The Musashi Shirakawa Dragon Katana. This sword is an old model of the still available 1060 DH Dragon Katana I purchased over ten years ago and was the second sword I reviewed on SBGForum! So how has this sword held up over the years and what does it say about Musashi Katana?

A well-done and highly informative review of this particular example from Musashi. For how long you have owned that sword, it has held up surprisingly well considering the blade has not chipped or rolled, and the ito is still serviceably tight. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks glad you enjoyed it! Yea they definitely don't make them like they used to when it comes to Musashi katana. These old Shirakawa models were a steal for the $80-$125 they were asking back in the late 00-s and early 10's.

I’ve had one of those, they’re not bad. But the T10, 1095, or damascus steel blades are better.

For being ten years old, the blade looked remarkably rust free. How often do you oil your blades? I don't oil mine as often as I should - tiny little discolored spots tend to collect near the ha. Also, and in my opinion, the bane of production katana, have you ever encountered tough resistance when it comes to sliding off the tsuka core from the nakago after removing the mekugi pins? I've paid up to $1200 for a katana (Direct X from SBG) and yup, pins out yet the core didn't want to budge at all!

I clean my swords monthly on average unless I cut then I'll clean after every cutting session. I have a whole cleaning kit I use. I have a video showing my cleaning methods I clean my Japanese Swords the same as I do my European swords. That's the problem with production swords and katana especially, a lot of koshirae and or fittings are mass produced and not built for each individual blade so you'll get variations on fit and finish sometimes doesn't matter if it's $100 swords or $1,000 swords unless advertised the majority will have run of the mill fittings.
