It's been done as a simple joke far too often to work again. They had to take it (semi)seriously, flesh it out with a solid scientific core, that was the only way to make it fresh again. Masterful.

It took me way too long to get the Sailor Moon reference. The japanese schoolgirl uniforms are those of Sailor Uranus from that anime (and yes, I had to google that).
