My husband and I were at Carlson Brothers in Tacoma, WA looking at their beautiful Ellensburg Blues. I tried on several rings and fell in love with pretty much all of them😀
Thank you for sharing with us. Best display of Ellensburg Blue Agates I have seen. Greatly appreciate the privilege of seeing them in detailed photos. Wow.
Wow. Need to watch this a few more times. Lots of great info to learn from here. Thanks to Nick and Carl for sharing this with us! The part about the microscopic views really shed some light on how they look the way they do!
When you see someone as wonderful as this I wish i lived next door to him . fascinating , entertaining and wanting to pass info on to people who are interested for its own sake . Nick you have some wonderful friends. x
Mr. Zentner, you ought to see if you can ever get on the property where Holly Blue is found near Sweet Home Oregon. The logging company has cut off the area to the public. One person to start with is my brother to get some info. He took me there once to dig Holly Blue before the area was shut down. Interesting area.
Awesome! That was really educational and super neat for him to allow you to record and video this. I would just love more of these where you learn about how to look for any particular rock/mineral/gem in the "wild" and how it presents in the raw. Carl is super neat!
Fun video, thank you! Really like when common items are used to tie back into Nicks bigger story and themes! Helps solidify the story and bring it to life in a more understandable way.
Great video like always. Thanks to Mr Carlson and of course Nick. I'm learning a lot and wish I knew some of this when I was a kid riding motorcycles all over the area. At least I saved some agates and quartz stuff 50 years ago, I need to get them out for a new look. I hope we don't see any more political flags though.
Cabochons have axis orientation for the cut especially opals and fire agate and many other stones, as for labradorite feldspar including moonstones orientation for best cut and cab is necessary for the visual effect you wish to achieve on cabbing the stone for its beauty. Good presentation on your local stone Nick
I'd love to hear more about its structure. Average crystallite size or is it amorphous silica? Are you aware of any research papers that are freely available? A great read is Studies on Agate by Terry Moxon.
I get what Jeff is saying about different things happening in the same place & at the same time... like the garage door & crystalline core, as well as the northeast WA rollback challis magmas in the same area & time as the metamorphic core complexes (~52-45 Ma). 🤔 Are all of the rollback magmas within the metamorphic core complexes, or only some, or none? I also get the concept of having an arc signature due to re-melt of old arc rocks in the challis... given there were no basalts (seen) these should have a high Nd / Sr value (or high Hf value) ...right? If these challis were subduction from ~50 Ma, they would have lower values.. right? At 1:28:48 of Eocene W Metamorphic core complexes with Tekla Harms; Tekla said: "Core complexes are located universally where the mountain belt thickened the crust maximumly". Could the thickness explain why no basalts were seen? Tekla also talked about the extension for the metamorphic core complexes relaxing to the west.... could that also explain the age progression pattern (even if it was rollback and/plus extension relaxing to the west)? The north & south Siletzia boundary lines represent today ..right? So the lines would not have been horizontal 50 Ma, but diagonal ( / ) ...right? Sometimes it's difficult to know what part of images represent today or an older time when they have modern geography and are representing an older time. ...so I mentally un-did the Straight creek fault & rotation to figure the diagonal lines for the n & s Siletzia boundary 50 Ma. Is that accurate? 🤔 💖💞
I don't understand the time sequence between when the volcanic eruption happens originally, and when the hot material that eventually forms into agates happens--- does it make no difference? Can it be millions of years, or is this a function of the later cooling process?
Since Elly's contain zircons can you use zircon magnetics as to find out generally where this came from, and since zircons are aligned and have poles could that alter the flow of liquid sort of like a ferrofluid
And what about the 'Ocean Picture Stone' Dan Hurd is finding up in BC? It's got the same colors. It's brecciated. I'd like to hear the story on that some day.
Nick should as his quarry is just over the border @ Midway BC about 4 hours drive from Ellisberg, We got 8 kgs and a Museum Specimen @ 5 kgs when the Family first worked the claim.Prices have climb since 2019 but with far more colours.
In the works, along with some non fossilized mineral speciums. Fossilized speciums requires both Federal and Provincial permits. 1 to 2 years. Also sending Nick another book .This one by Dale Leckie, The Scenic Geology Of Alberta. His latest book (June 2021 ) was recommended to us and is featured in our Fly Fishing site! Many of our River's in Alberta cut through some awesome places. Geology and Geography abounds floating down Alberta 's River's it is great for Sole and Mind. People like Nick Zendner, Dale Leckie and Ben Gadd must be named as respected National Treasures.
Hmmm... I've found very similar looking blue agate, perhaps slightly darker, east of Medford, Oregon. But it was out of hydrothermal tubes passing through basalt.
Another great segment, thanks Nick. As it happens we were driving over Swauk pass that morning on the way from southern Utah to Everett. Saw the signs for the miners meeting and stopped by, but missed Carl’s presentation. One question I had looking at the crystals in the magnifications, is it the hexagonal Quarz or the monocline form (moganite) of SiO2?
You gained many followers recently when your video about Ancient Plants in Washington was discovered by our Facebook Plant Club. But now a new issue has arisen : Would love to see your take on the Space Com report about the "Mystery of Grand Canyon's missing rocks". How did the evidence of the breakup of Rodinia effect Washington State?
I wonder if Mike Eddy or Erin could date the injections? It strikes me as a fault related event maybe a last gasp ,itd be interesting to know the differences in ages...
The boys and I will be viewing and reviewing, cussing and discussing this video ad nauseam. We’re a Blues family. What event is the intrusion of the blues associated with?
would be an honor to meet Carl Carlson, would love to sit and hear everything he has to say ! Thank you for this video 🙏🪨
Nick, that was so cool, and make sure Carl knows we all appreciate him sharing his information that has been passed down from is dad.

@@lotharschiese8559 So I've been learning! Nick is a great teacher. I've seen all of his stuff.
I cant imagine what it must be like to make a trip to Carl's mine and actually dig for Ellensburg Blue Agates. Definitely a bucket list item.

Cool! Thank you, Nick and Mr. Carlson! I wonder how many blue agates I stepped on and never recognized out in the field!
You gotta love that Carl Carlson!

Great vid, Nick! It was a fun day going between the 2 gatherings, and both your presentations were great! Chris

I too found similar blue agate in Spray, OR. Also chert pieces, rainbow colors at a place where Indians supposedly made arrows.
I've always wanted to be a Georgia rock hound

The pictures of the minerals look to me like a reflection that you might see in space through the Hubble
As above, so below
😁
It's too bad this isn't at night and you could some of the samples under a black light. Same goes for seeing scorpions at night.
Rock. On.
My late wife found a blue agate on the beach in Port Orford Or. Long way from Liberty..

name/location of Carl's shop
I believe it’s Carlson Brothers Jewelry in Tacoma, Washington.
Mr Carlson still here?
I want to be the first to comment. Thank you Professor Zentner.

The cave dude in me wants to know if those agates fracture conchoidally and flake easy after heat treatment.
