So, does that mean you often have to replace the tape when cleaning the harp?
I wanted to ask this as well. I rinse my harmonica and swish it around in a bowl of water whenever I'm done playing it. Do you replace the tape each time? Or am I cleaning too often perhaps?
What does the tape do?
avoid squealing tone in overdraw
@@detharp Sorry. I should have been more specific. HOW does the tape keep the reed from squealing? What does it do to the reed that keeps it from squealing?
It stops the torsional vibration of the reed. It mutes so all the air can go to the other reed and the overdraw/blow begins

@@FilipJersMusic Fascinating! Thank you!
A very informative video
Glad it was helpful!
Does the tape stop the vibrations that produce the OB squeel? I’ve never seen tape applied to the reed, only the rivet end. Very useful! Also, is there a specific tape you use?
Yes correct! No, just standard office tape.
@@FilipJersMusic that’s excellent info to know! I’ve always had issues with it whenever working on phosphor bronze reeds, and I usually use BluTak on the rivet end, the tape will look so much cleaner. Thank you.
Do you use this tape trick on overblows on holes +4°,+5°,+6° too?
No not so often, mostly on overdraws.
@@FilipJersMusic thanks Filip !
Thanks much for this. While I can squeak out a few overblows and overdraws, I can’t play them well and can’t afford customized harps. This gives me a couple of new ideas to try.
Make friends with a customizer. A good one can take one of your harps, tune it, and set it up for advanced techniques for WAY less than custom harp.
Please sorry..... A diferent question, Please which potitition do you play for' on the road again "
2nd position!
Great video Filip!
Manji A is my favourite harp - always in my pocket.
I used to hate it until I was good enough to control it and play all 38 semitones.
The 7 OverDraw was very hard to pull at first, and after proper gapping and flat sanding the comb and flattening the plates it came out fine but with squeaking.
My solution was dental wax on the reed bases, but after many months of playing and washing of the wax, it came down to better technique - proper point of sucking out the overdraw and lowering the jaw into accurate tuning, stabilizing the vibration so it won't squeal.
Perfect chromatic flows - cheers!
Good point! And yes - good technique is essential and makes everything easier. I am so amazed how small distances is it on 7OD and between different keyed harps, doing it on a C harp compared to A or a LF differs a lot. I use dental wax as well. But sometimes this tape trick can be useful! The dental wax collects dirt and dust easily.
What a wonderful tone! It is the first time I have heard Manji being played, amazing!
Thanks!
Thank you verry verry much . 🎉
No problem 😊

It work's great! Thanx, man!
Cool, happy to help 🎵🎵🎵

Filip, thank you for teaching us how to solve problems easy, smart way. It might be off the topic, but I believe that's the way your look in this video fits you very well.
Thanks!
