Just saw Tim tonight for the first time since I recorded this performance and his encore was Dark Side and then Hallelujah. He asked for us to close our eyes, also asking the house to go to a near blackout, and then for us to join in a sing a long for the chorus. Unbelievable performance overall and that moment to close the show was simply unreal 🧡

I saw Tim tonight for the 7th time (maybe 8th) and had the same experience of Hallelujah being played at the end. What a beautiful experience. A really amazing edition to my many shows.
This version you recorded is special to a lot of people and was many people's only chance to hear him sing a serious song for, what, 14 years? Lol. Thanks for this. I realised tonight that the only reason I know the lyrics to hallelujah is from watching this clip.

As an Aussie that just moved to Canada, I got to see Tim in a 2000 person theatre tonight and be a part of the whole crowd singing with Tim in the dark. This is my 7th time seeing Tim perform and that was such a special moment.
He seemed to be very present tonight, and a bit taken aback by the hugely supportive Canadian crowd. Amazing show.

I was the sound guy. The Wine Bar was my venue. That was literally the last thing played.
Absolutely fantastic it was. There"s a band on the stage that you can't see. Fab guys but the name escapes me at the moment.
Some guy on his phone or camera but from a sound point of view, pretty chuffed with the sound :)
It really was pretty special & I'm glad I was there.

i think one of the greatest thing of owning a venue, is not the profit, nor the connection you get from known ppl,
but to witness musical/artistic moments like this, that will most likely get wash away and lost from people's memory, or that most people didn't even know existed, but it happened at your venue, and you gets to be there, at that very moment when it happened....
and thanks for Sean we get to share this wonderful moment and a truly wonderful version of this historical song,
      i am truly greatful
PS: who is that lady? her voice is just..... wow

The Sheer Joy of Art and Intellect without Compromising Integrity - so rare and so sweet - Minchin delivers. For those of us lost among our fellow violent ignorant ape decedents with our compassion and creativity gasping for what rarefied air remains there are far too few like Tim to help us along the way. As we mark off the final generations/years of our species and try as best we can to grab what joy remains may humor and the spark such artists provide .... well, you get the point.

Cohen, Shrek Buckley (really y'all?), the truly marvelous K.D. Lang, even my perfect angel Brandi Carlile, never brought me the deep down blues roots Geri brings here. Listen again. Don't miss her laying all the way back in a totally new groove. Somehow, this alcohol-infused bar-room episode redefines the song. Again.

David Kern Quinny is a gem of the Melbourne comedy industry. Total rock chick. I love this clip - musical mates having a great old (definitely tipsy) time together in an off-the-cuff performance. This is what makes festivals like Edinburgh Fringe, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Adelaide Fringe, etc such a great experience - this sort of thing happens all the darned time at tiny little gigs. Take a punt and you can see the most amazing things. Good to see Mick Moriarty copping a kiss at the end.

Amazing voice from sitting hunched over, obviously ten sheets to the wind, holding back laughter, and producing a voice like that! You can hear the strain at ~2.40 and the meter gets a tiny bit messy and there are tichy flats in his upper register, but it sounds better than I ever could even at my best. Also I love that he sings with his real accent. He sings like an Ausie not a generic Broadway West End musical singer, or Motown rip off, or whatever. I wonder if that's a conscious choice and given how pathologically self reflective he seems to be I expect it is :) It really comes out during the crescendo in the final refrain, along with some quirkey, chaotic, falsetto, and lends personality and gravity in a way that a flatpack broadway accent never could.
Four stars (reads like a five)

I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
    It goes like this
    The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
    The baffled king composing Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
    It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
There was a time when you let me know
    What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Maybe there’s a God above
But all I’ve ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
It’s not a cry you can hear at night
It’s not somebody who has seen the light
    It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well, really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah

I have 14 and 15 yr old teenagers that I introduced to Tim Minchin's music at a very young age. We all agree THIS song/video is the best. It's just so raw, organic and real. Our favourite performance of this song (no offense to Leonard Cohen, he's amazing). Extra special because this is the only video I have found online. I can hear this version anytime, all the time. Tim's voice is just perfect for this song. It is so hard to explain but it's like he caresses every note, gets under the song and props up certain parts with his voice and it's just magical.

KD Lang nailed it. I didn't even realize the depths of that song until I watched her sing it. Even Leonard Cohen said that the song could be laid to rest after her performance because it had been done to perfection.

    • @kathyheyne8610

It's not AT ALL about religion, inspite of the biblical references. It's about the heartbreak of falling out of love: "I've seen your flag on the Marble Arch, but love is not a victory march. It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah." That's human pain and grief and loss.

First, this is beautiful. Raw, real and what music started as. No overproduction or trying to hit targets for record sales. You have to be there in the moment to feel it. I love Tim's voice. I really like her voice. The problem for me is that instead of trying to create something beautiful with Tim, she almost sees the end as a competition to out-sing him. Still a beautiful cover, but I wish she hadn't got carried away as it started sublimely

Geraldine Quinn's vocals are outstanding. I really like Tim Minchin, but credit where due, Quinn is the vocal foundation of the duet in this rendition. She alone gave it the sole that inspired Minchin to let go more than he normally would, and her raw, perfect pitch boozy blues coupled with Minchin's nervous uncertainty in uncharted waters make this a truly unrepeatable masterpiece of the moment. BRAVO!

I disagree. She's very good, please don't think I disagree with that, but Tim sings as Cohen would (I feel). American singers tend to turn this into some religious theme and beautify it. Quinn and Tim treated this just right.

I rewatch this every few months or so, for the last however many years it's been online. I saw Tim perform this song several times during his 2011 tour, and hope that someday he'll release an official version of him doing this song (not a studio recording, but just an authorized, pro-shot version of one of the many times he's performed this and other cover songs live).

    • @wideopenthrottl
      @wideopenthrottl 8 лет назад

+Brendan Fletcher It questions the existence of a god and the phrase literally means "god be praised." An atheist singing this would just be humoring their audience since his mind is already made up.

The Phrase is being used, alongside the other religious biblical references, to decry the nature of loving a woman. Just because the language is liturgical does not mean the song is, in the same way that my wife isn't praying to God when we go to bed at night
