    Also, this movie is INCREDIBLE with color theory.
    Riley: striped shirt as they're moving with all colors on them to show theyre in harmony, or so it seems. yellow jacket on the first day of school because she's still young enough to be excited. Striped shirt sans blue and yellow at the dinner table because all of her emotions are fighting for control with joy and sadness gone. Black jacket because she's emotionally shutting down.
    Emotions: joy has blue hair, backing up the theory joy and sadness go hand in hand. Disgust has a purple ascot, suggesting disgust is mainly motivated by what scares us. Anger is wearing a red tie showing how when were angry, we can't see, hear, or feel anything else. Think, "seeing red". And finally Sadness is wearing a white turtleneck as a combination of all the emotions, like how all light is combined to make white light.

    fun fact, disgust is actually meant to look like broccoli! the animators used different shapes to create the characters: joy is shaped like a star, sadness a teardrop, anger a brick, fear as a nerve and disgust as broccoli, since that's something Riley hates! it's such a fun little detail and I love that you picked up on it right away

    Joy and Sadness aren't polar opposites. They're two sides of the same coin.

  • @MysticMyths
    @MysticMyths 3 года назад +81

    Rival, Joy is the villain of the movie. She was so focused on Riley being happy that it was toxic: Toxic Positivity. Saddness is a part of life, all emotions are. We can't force them down, ignore them, push them away.

  • @TheInspirefly
    @TheInspirefly 3 года назад +189

    What happened was this: Riley had gone completely numb, and was depressed. Her other emotions couldn't get her to stop running away, because she had shut down from not being able to feel what she needed to. Meanwhile, Joy realized that Sadness was actually good for Riley and a valuable emotion (by looking at that old memory of her teammates coming to cheer her up after she lost the game), because Sadness was the signal to others to help Riley, and Riley's signal to herself to get help. So rather than preventing Riley from feeling sad, like Joy thought she had to, she realized the solution was to let Sadness do her thing and let Riley feel sad when she needed to, rather than try to force herself to stay happy, like so many of us try to (and even Riley's parents had unintentionally put that pressure on her, not realizing how emotionally damaging that would be). When Riley was able to feel sad again, it caused her to "wake up" from her shutdown and reach out to her parents for help.
    This movie is incredible, and was made in collaboration with some of the top psychologists in the field to be very accurate, regarding emotions, cognition, personality, and brain development.

      All of this!
      Also, I love how the end when Riley comes back shows us why Sadness felt compelled to touch the core memories and what it would do: the happy memories Riley had in Minnesota are now tinged with sadness because she's no longer in Minnesota and misses those people and places. Those will always be core memories, and now they'll always be a little sad, too.
      The scene with Sadness and Bing Bong always gets me with how good it is... Joy tries to distract him from his sadness and pain, to force him to keep it down. But Sadness sits down with him, allows him to feel what he feels and validates his feelings. What happened *was* really sad! And he needed that space to just feel that with someone who could empathize with him. Reinforces the overall theme of the film!
      And the mix of Joy and Sadness at the end: bittersweet! Riley is still sad about being away from the friends she had and the familiar places in Minnesota, but she's also happy that her parents listened to her and understand that she can't always be the happy one anymore, that it's not fair to her.
      This movie does *such* a good job at showing how, as we age, our emotions become more complex. When we're kids, it's pretty easy. Joy, sadness, anger, fear, disgust. Those are all pretty simple emotions and as kids we don't really need more than that. As we get older, experience more complicated events in the world, and mature... we need more complicated emotions to cope. Hence, after the first experience of bittersweet, the main emotions get a new, larger control panel with more stuff and where more than one of them can be in control at one time.

    7:02 no no. Riley was crying because it didn't hit her until just then that that part of her life in Minnesota is over, and crying, like anger, tends to overshadow everything, to where you can forget who you are, or why you were ever happy in the first place.

    A lot of people headcanon Riley as nonbinary because every other person whose emotions we see have all their emotions as the same gender, whereas Riley's emotions aren't like that

    • @aliyahpulido953
      @aliyahpulido953 2 года назад +12

      This is reasonable! Another theory I've heard floating around is that younger children have mixed-gender emotions because their world isn't set in black-and-white certainty yet, and they're learning how to be themselves and develop. When they get older, their emotions homogenize and work better together, which is why adults' emotions are all the same gender, which is also the same gender as their human. Now, if Riley (or any other person) WERE non-binary, I'd imagine their emotions would present according to how their human feels, and the emotions would probably all present the same at any given time too. If not, their emotions' genders would probably also fluctuate differently so some would be more fem or more masc than others, to varying degrees.
      This was just a thought experiment that was fun to build, I mean to cause no offense or argument, I just wanted to put my little blurb out into the Internet for others to ponder, and maybe add to!

    but Riley's emotion's gender are mixed.. It can mean two things
    Either Riley is questioning..And once she figures out her gender...Her emotions will become the gender she is sure of or it means she is not one of the two genders
    also Riley's emotions are childish and immature(which is why at first sadness may have come off as irritating but she was just curious) unlike her parents whose emotions are very controlled and stuff.. Cause these emotions are children as well.. the emotions are as old as they are

    I’m a year late but thought I could explain Rileys hair and eye color being different from her parents, and yes it is because of recessive genes. Imagine that “A” codes for black or brown eyes, and “a” codes for blue or green eyes. We each have two “letters”, one from each parent. A is dominant, so you just need one to get dark eyes. While lighter eye colors are recessive, so you would need two a’s.
    For Riley to have blue eyes, even though her parents are brown eyed, she needs to have the genotype aa, while both her parents would have the genotype Aa. There is 25% chance that two people with the genotype Aa have a child with blue eyes, so it’s not that rare. Same premise goes for blonde and dark hair

    6:33 This is a perfect example of what can happen if we don't allow ourselves to feel sadness, or any emotion, for that matter. They go out of control eventually and "don't know how to behave," aka, we act on them in inopportune ways, like having a breakdown in public or laughing uncontrollably when our life has exploded on us and everything is going wrong.
    Sadness has never been allowed to do her job, so she impulsively tries to have a role in Riley's life any way she can, which results in chaos because the other emotions, mainly Joy, won't let Sadness have her role and let sad/melancholy moments play out. In reality, we NEED sadness to release toxic things, and being sad isn't toxic in itself.
    Just like Cinema Therapy said about this movie, "Feeling joy is good, *if it's real.*" Otherwise, it's just toxic positivity, where the happiness we're pretending to have because "being happy is good," is fake and we don't get to process our other emotions that are vital for balance. And it's perfectly fine to have mixed emotions, or to have NO IDEA how you're feeling in the moment! Just let it out, let yourself process it! That's much better for your mental and emotional health than trying to keep it in.

    I think this movie just represents DEPRESSION in such an accurate way. One of the things I noticed in the movie is that joy kept pushing sadness away acting like she's less important even though she was exactly the second emotion that was formed after her in the brain, I think they were trying to say that not allowing your self to feel bad is one of the reasons why mental health issues pile up and also when joy was gone so was sadness which meant that the most affective or deep (basic) two emotions along with core memories were absent from the brain and that might represent how depression also equals the feeling of emptyness or just being numb. and also confirms the idea of sadness being as important as Joy like I said the two basic emotions

  • @GummiAnd
    @GummiAnd 2 года назад

    The hole theme of the movie really is sneaked into the design of Joy. Because unlike the other emotions, she is not just one color. There's both yellow and blue in her, meaning there's no joy without sadness. Repressing your emotions can really mess you up. You gotta embrace it all.

    This movie without the 5 being comedic is sad. I really feel for the Reilly. It’s hard to movie away from what you love and know, especially for kids. And moving from MN to CA is a big change! Entirely different lifestyle and culture. Unfortunately kids aren’t always taken into account when uprooting life. It’s just sorta assumed they’ll get over it like many adults do, but it’s not always like that. When I was young, my mom moved us to a city based purely on her own motives and didn’t take my well-being into consideration, even though others tried to bring it to her attention. Long story short, my school didn’t work out. I bullied quite a bit and ultimately had to move back to my home town with other family for a time. Sure, moving can be fun, sometimes unavoidable and necessary, but it’s also important to check in with the kids and recognize when your kid might be trying hard to be strong when really there’s more going on than what’s on the surface.

    Interesting that you picked up on the blonde hair and blue eyes; there's a fan theory that says that Riley is adopted. Which I personally think holds legitimacy, besides her looks. There's the clothes that her mother is wearing when she first sees her, they don't look like delivery clothes, and the way the parents talk to her there seems like this is the first time they talked to her. There's also a detail in her Family Island where her family tree does not have any branches besides her parents.
    Also, this is one of those movies that invariably makes me cry. You can look at Riley's idea to run away and no one being able to make her feel anything to change her mind as being the same thing that happens in suicide. Every story I've ever heard of someone who survived a suicide attempt instantly regretted it. As someone who has dealt with depression on and off for years, the perfect representation of depression is not too much sadness. It's not being able to feel anything. You go about your day in a fog on autopilot, and you don't feel much of anything. I also think the concept that she has forgotten how to be happy, and it took her getting sad in order to remember how to be happy. In many ways, the role of sadness in this story and in real life is to process difficult times and to open a door for the people in your life to comfort you. The creator of this said when he was thinking of the storyline for this that he thought of the important people in his life, and all the important people in his life are those whom he has shared sadness with. The more you try to push sadness away, the worse off you get.
    I often do a test with this movie, because for me watching it is cathartic. There are two moments that make me cry each time. Of course when she cries with her parents, but also when Joy is in the void and all these memories of this happy girl are fading away (dammit I'm tearing up as I'm writing this) followed by Joy rewinding the happy memory to see that it was only happy because of sadness. The more I cry at these two scenes, the more cathartic it is for me. So if I'm blubbering like a baby, you can bet that means that I've been pushing something off. And afterwards, I spend the next few hours in Pixar Nirvanna, where I'm at peace and things seem so clear.
