  • Hello folks! Today I want to show you my new restoration project. I found this seax knife at flea market. Seller said, this old knife him get from his brother which working as a blacksmith. I guess it’s handmade knife in viking style. In any cases I bought it for USD $6. I like a big knife, due to you can use it’s like a knife butcher or machete. First of all, I removed old brass rivets and one side of wood handle.
To remove main layers of rusty I used electrolysis and after washing in cold water with detergent.
Then start to polish it. At the beginning I used 80 and 240 gradation sandpapers after from 400 to 2500 and finally polishing wheel. Further I started to make a wood handle, I used nut tree. Rivets I used aluminum with a wholes and brasses. For knife wood handle I used a special oil for wood and after make test for that knife. Also, how you think this knife it's really seax knife? Thank you in advance. I hope you enjoy this video. Thank you for attention!
    Sincerely, Alex. Thanks for attention!
Good luck and health to everyone! With best wishes, Alex!

Very impressed! Also, really enjoyed it when you got to the end and used it for chopping wood as I had been thinking “that looks like a stick knife...”-a knife for making sticks/kindling! I have one by Sheffield maker, Robert Sorby, and when I saw the triangular profile of the blade, I thought it looked like a Seax!
I think that the dinks on the back of the blade was where it was hammered through logs, splitting, and the logs were maybe a bit thicker than it was designed for.
    Nice job!

beautiful work as usual, but sometimes I think you make it more work than it has to be you have a disc and belt sander, you could do more of the work with that. . The fact you could use a file on it makes me wonder about the heat treat, and how well it will hold up. The handle looks a little squared off and boxy for my taste, but I haven't held it it's hard to say from a vid how it would actually feel in the hand. Doesn't seem as sharp as it could be, this looks like a kitchen knife, it should be absolutely razor sharp in my opinion. What was the wood you used for the handles? Good looking stuff.

Also I get this was perhaps a quick refurbish job, but it would have been much more original if you would have created your own unique handle, and perhaps a sheath of some sort.
