The reason for these empty 'halls' is that they were a part of the protection. If you leave empty cavities in the roof, bombs will explode partly in empty air and release the pressure. It's cheaper to make than having a solid concrete.

HH, please pass on to your friend how grateful we all are, for guiding you guys through this amazing structure, and allowing us all the privilege to see what very few have ever seen. And most especially to see such rare sights, as the corner guard position, and the whole sub pen from the bottom, the top, and, the dry dock gate. I doubt very few have ever seen it all like this, and very, very, few have ever seen the guard post , or been able to play with the shutters! Thank you both for taking the time, and effort, to share this incredible location with us. Hoepfully, the developers nver get their way, and this structure remains as it it, so be seen by many future History Hunters for a long time yet. Cheers to you both!

My father was a merchant marine Ship Captain. The U Boats never hit his ship when on convoy. He wanted to be a fighter pilot but he was stuck being a Captain on a ship. Later he got a new ship and spent the rest of the war in the Pacific.I spent my life at sea never wanted to do anything else. Seeing your shows are great I enjoy them all. When I was young I spent months at Dutchharbor it was in 1960 the Navy left everything when they left after the war. I remember the submarine base there I would explore all of the old military positions on the Island. It was still mined in some places so you had to stay out. When I was fishing and doing salvage work I worked with men that were in the German military as well as for the allies. Everyone got along well they were part of history and it was a privilege to know them all.

It wasn't until you and EE went down the stairs to the bottom of the pen that I really got a sense of the size of this place. Amazing that you received permission to tour the place and were able to document it!!! That gate folds!!! Crazy!! Pics of the U-Boats in the place was great to see. Top corner visitor and the shutter moved!! Awesome! What a huge area for storage and workshops! Soldier footprints in the concrete from the construction who probably were watching over the workers as they put n the concrete, set forever for us to see! Great stuff!!

Hitler built this for his thousand years Reich. He meant for it to last. Even with the workers working fast to finish it, it is still standing. It’s a testament to the impressive work of people of this time. I wonder if the square cutouts in the walls were attachment point for equipment to build this huge structure? I do hope developers don’t get their way and try to destroy this historical site. Thanks to your friend for allowing you to share this amazing site.

Can't even imagine the time spent designing and constructing those intricate concrete structures. Yes, just imagine what they would have looked like back in the day. Until 1995, a submarine bunker in Hamburg's Vulkanhafen harbour still housed three submarines. They were largely cannibalised by the British and then the bunker was to be blown up. However, this did not work out as planned. The structure was too massive. Sand was then filled in in 1995. At the beginning of the 2000s, the remains were blown up again with moderate success and then further demolished. Today, the entire volcanic harbour has been filled in and a car park has been built on the buried bunker remains along with the submarines.

G'day from an ex australian submariner engineering, fascinating the build capabilities of the German Kreigsmarine to support their submarines, Karl definately had skills but eventually we all know the history the sad loss of all the brave men that servered in submarines that lost their lives for their country as a fellow ex submariner great respect to you as a brother in Unterseeboot

Hello to the History Hunting Crew.. Thank you for bringing us something new. It is an amazing U base. It is asinine how large this places foot print has to be. Thanks again for the amazing views and peek at history. You would think a facilities that size would be used completely for something today. Take care and stay safe!

Those indentations which were seen in the side walls could be where one put lengths or wooden or steel props to shore up the boat and make it steady ? Great video 📹 and many thanks to your friend who made this possible.

I would love to see how they set the blocks to support the u-boats, and how they used the upper floors for , Thank for the tour of this fascinating facility HH And EE.

Such a fantastic explore and a great follow up to a previous video to actually have a friend to let you come inside and make it come full circle ! And fulfill your dream of seeing the inside of the guard tower section too ! Because of your past service as a submariner to show your son about this must be really exciting to share with him . I also found these before as well . I wonder if on your "Off time" you and EE went Bowling and had some fun too lol . Love it , and hope all is well my friends !

Awesome video once again. This video is so much better than watching a documentary on television. With you and Eagle Eyes we get the Raw action right here and now feeling. Great work to you both, I love it. If the Germans built it, you know it will be very Awesome Very Cool and last for a very very very long time.

The system used is similar to the Pedestrian Underpass that are under Railway Stations for getting the water out when it gets flooded.
The floor is slopped to the center where there is a deep pit with what's called a submersible pump that when turned on, pumps the water out into the gutter on the street above.

Another one that is incredibly neat to see is the giant bunker that had been built to essentially act as a final assembly factory for the Type XXI Uboats. I don't remember exactly how many would have been in there at one time in various stages of final assembly, it was something like 17 boats between the first stage and the final stage just before they would sail out to sea. But it is a neat place to see. It had never been fully completed, and the roof has some... what you might refer to as "wartime redecorating". It's just kind of nuts how big of a construction it is. And really fascinating all around.

Guard corner was pretty basic but effective for MG34 and MG42's I was hoping you would go up there and you did, it takes a curious man to investigate what's behind a wall or door. In some ways the U Bunker is like a Veste with openings for shooting arrows from many angles. The war was a proving ground for German ingenuity.

I always enjoy your videos. It's so encouraging to see how EE is growing and learning at your side. I can agree that the Germans had brilliant engineers, and often good designs. But as a U.S. citizen of 72 years, my Father fought in WWII against the Axis powers. Please keep in mind that many of us have family members that were wounded or died in the conflict. My Uncle Corwin was shot down and killed in a bombing run over Germany. When I think of the enslavement of thousands and thousands of workers, the many death camps & the Holocaust; I just can't be so enthusiastic at what they built. But I always learn from your videos, and I appreciate that.
