This year the Lifestyle Lab espresso setup has evolved pretty significantly since last year. Gone are the Rocket Appartamento and Niche Zero. In fact, the only espresso tools that are the same as last year are the tamping mat and WDT tool! So stay tuned while I explain why these items have been my most used for espresso in 2022

Mahlkonig X54 link is broken FYI
Yes, they appear to be out of stock right now. Thank you!
I’d love to see your review of the Gaggiuino.
Would be cool for sure!
As a recent Decent owner, it truly is a pleasure to use. When Decent improves, they make it available to upgrade, a top-notch company. I had a Breville prior and am now pulling the tastiest shots and producing latte art foam w/o a problem. 9 bar pressure; constant flow rate; constant temperature, and a few seconds pre-infusion is so 2021 😀.
Another awesome video Lifestyle Lab!
Thank you for featuring the Mahlkönig X54 Allround Home Grinder! We are delighted you love it as much as we do ❤
Would love to see more Decent tips content
Great to see the whole workflow! I don’t think I realized you want back to the decent! Very fun
Also love the normcore tamper, for the exact same reasons!
Love these !!!
Nice matte mat Matt
😂
I enjoy your videos very much. Can you make a series of videos that analyze the mistakes or things happening in the making coffee process? Like why my puck is so soggy, and how to avoid channeling, etc. I know they are very basic, but really good for beginners to learn.
That was fun. Amazing the price of the Duomo. The price of espresso tools is always ❤❤❤
For single dosing the X54 i let it run about 3-4 times longer than it takes to grind most of the beans that way it slowly releases all the grounds without having to lift the grinder, tap it etc.
I've used a bellows that was custom printed, but it didn't work at all so I'm back to using the hopper.
If you find one you need to make sure the entry to the grinder is very narrow such that the air can actually travel with sufficient force to push the grounds out.
Which bellows did you go with?
Great setup!
Nice! Dude went from a Breville Dual Boiler to a Rocket and Niche to a Decent
Oh man I tried to go to Cavan Coffee when I was in Guelph last week and I just missed them after my class on campus! Anyway, love the video and keep up the great content!!
Nice video. Maybe try the Cremina and see how it compares to the Decent. I would be very curious. I have tried the Cremina and it was the best espresso experience I ever had.
Duomo sounds just like Webber’s fancy portafilter basket combo: you don’t need, there are equally functioning cheaper options but - it’s so nice to have it.
For sure, good parallel to draw!
I love my x54 and can echo your praise. Well done Mahlkoenig! I do not use it as a single dose though as I hardly change beans between bags and if I do I use my c40 to cover the inbetween drinks.
3,500 dollars
@@F4ITHCODER what is? This malkonig is $600
@@Krunkscooters the decent machine
I appreciate the honesty on the Duomo. I'm sure it's great but I cannot imagine how they justify $200.
Also, I’ve found that if you’re content to lightly hold the end of your portafilter handle while grinding, you can remove the top part of the portafilter cradle attachment and use a dosing funnel. This will be my go-to setup when grinding for espresso.
Good tip!
I would love to see a modified holder with more adjustability. Can't dose without a funnel on most machines.
Seems like the only way up is a Slayer and a Lagom p64! Love the videos bro. Got the upgraditis pretty bad; you’re making that decent sound tempting!
Slayer from a looks and user experience perspective 100%, but I'll take the shot quality from the Decent over a Slayer ANY day of the week
Hi, love your videos!
Could you review the "new" rancilio silvia Pro X? Would be amazing!
Looks like Euan Lake and Alex Rosas designed a nice single dosing mod for the X54 to 3d print. Very similar in design to the single dosing mods for Eureka grinders, which I use on one of my grinders and works well. Cheers, and thanks for a fun year of coffee stuff!
@UCgPpWzZyDfHI7KP2cTCgmGQ I can't link to it because the comment will get flagged, but it comes up searching the grinder name on TE verse :)
Found their video, thanks!
Didn’t know those guys had a Podcast now, very cool
please show us how you dial!
I don’t think RUclips will let me post a URL, but there are 3D print files available to single dose mod the X54. Lance references them in his video. I plan on printing them this week some time.
Thanks Eric!
They need a very narrow funnel at the bottom and a big bellows otherwise it won't do anything.
I've used one for this grinder and it made zero difference
I’ve been using the single dosing mod for the X54 for some time now and I’m very pleased. I put my Decent dosing funnel on the mod funnel for weight, and my bellows on top of that. My workflow is extremely low retention now.
I upgraded from an Apartamento to a Decent DE1Pro too, although I’m still using a Niche. Just preordered a Kafatek MC5 which will replace the Niche as my endgame conical. Now I just a need a flat… (P100 or EG-1 😅)
Heck of a setup!
I choose EG-1 and Flat Max
Things that can knock off a Decent on the brew bar or be considered instead of one with no problem:
- Lelit Bianca or any Lucca paddle flow control e61: They have a much more simplified flow control paddle range from off/
To me the 2 biggest reasons I'm staying with my (Rocket R58) or the (Lelit Bianca V3) my mother will receive tomorrow and that I'm still afraid of buying a Decent is stuff like this:
1- 750$CAD of SHIPPING COST to Canada like WTF!?! I emailed them to ask if it was sent by a private jet plane but they gave me a BS excuse that they don't have any resellers here so they ship directly to the customer from China and even though the machine is lightweight, the box somehow is almost twice the weight around 45lbs they said... still no excuse for being that outrageously expensive just for shipping fees!!! He said that you get the cut the "cut of the middle man" but I would rather pay that than pay 3x the cut onto shipping fees...
2- If you need help or warranty, wtf is it gonna cost me another 2x750$ of ridiculous shipping just to get it fixed?! I bet that no one here can repair such strange machine as they are all used to standard E61 or other more known commercial machines. Wtf are they waiting to get a North American reseller? Are they just that greedy and want 100% of the profit...
3- If the main guy behind the machine, that bald guy which makes very boring videos dies, then the whole project is doomed???
4- Paying that much money to have a "Made in China" stamp... the pill is hard to swallow.
The link for the Mahlkonig X54 does not work.
Hey man, always a big fan of your set up! I do have a question, though, as versatile as the decent is, do you find that you get a different taste profile from having a vibration pump as opposed to a rotary pump found in some of the E61 machines? I’m sure the decent has a much higher quality vibratory pump than the ulka pumps that are ubiquitous in the lower end machines, but I am just curious if you have noticed anything that sticks out like a sore thumb even in standard nine bar extractions without a tapering pressure profile.
No, I don’t think anyone could say with a straight face that they can taste the difference between a vibration pump and a rotary pump
@@LifestyleLab_ I wonder if it’s confirmation bias from those people. I certainly can taste the difference from my current profitec to my older entry-level breville, but I’m sure that has more to do with the improvement in my puck prep, temperature, stability, and just developing a better palate overtime as opposed to the pump style.
100% the difference there is due to a more consistent machine, better water distribution, the larger 58mm basket, and MOST of all, any puck prep / grinder upgrades
Get yourself a special treat for your good work on this channel and pair that DE1Pro with a Lagom P64 🙃
Beautiful beautiful grinders, just so so expensive and hard to get a hold of!
Curious whether you have tried the force tamper, and how you would compare it to the normcore. I have both. I like the impact pressure of the force tamper, but mostly due to how it feels rather than functionality/improved coffee. I just like the feeling of the click, it is satisfying. The normcore is fine and is well built, but I don't get the same resistance that I would feel with a normal tamper (i.e. feeling when a conventional tamper has "bottomed out" and the resistance you feel, and there is no "click" feedback like the force tamper, so in my head I am always wondering whether I have tamped deep/hard enough. Also curious if you did a comparison between the Duomo and normcore WDTs. Is the main advantage of the duomo the build quality and feeling of the magnets?
Similar to the DUOMO, I just can't stomach the price of the Force Tamper. The click does look very very satisfying though.
Yes, the advantages of the DUOMO over the Normcore version is 100% down to build quality and feel while using. Functionally almost identical.
Have you done any work with the Sanremo YOU? Would be curious to hear your thoughts on that one if you get the opportunity.
Never tried a Sanremo 😢
Man i ask, Normcore Temper in this video can use with the original decent portafilter? and what size this tamper?
Yes it can, it's a precision 58.5mm
My only concern about software is the possibility of a company putting a paywall up allowing certain aspects of the software only if you pay a monthly fee. Look at what Google did to the pictures. I can crop for free but basically anything beyond that I have to pay a monthly fee to change my pictures. In the future I can see coffee companies charging a monthly fee for their software because it WILL cost money for a software updates.
What happens when the software bricks? Will the machine still be usable?
I imagine there is probably a single dosing set up for that grinder someone makes and sells on etsy. Tons of fantastic coffee products are made and sold on there.
I have access to a 3D printer, so I’m looking into it :)
@@LifestyleLab_ I bought an absolutely fantastic single dose adapter with bellows, as well as a gasket for my breville smart grinder. With a couple small tweaks to the impeller I have a basically zero retention grinder. The parts I got were absolutely unreal quality. Also, tons of love from north of lake superior :)
Have you tried the meticulous espresso machine?
Should be arriving soon!
What profiles do you mainly run on the decent?
Adaptive and Filter 2.1
how about filter basket ? the original one from Decent ?
Running an IMS Nanotech
Does the drip tray on the DE1 come with the cutout for the scales?
No that is an aftermarket one by Euan Lake
@@LifestyleLab_ thank you! I’ll look them up 😊
Do you still have your niche, would love to buy it.
Not planning on getting rid of it :)
I currently have a the Rocket Giotto, Ceado E37J and really want to purchase the Decent. It's a lot of money to buy one without ever seeing one in person. In the decent forum would you know Anyone who has one in the Kingston area?
Look for a local cafe using them!
There is a map on the Decent website I believe
What about your 2023 setup 😊?
I do them at the end of each year! :)
I think brewing a shot with your setup accompanied by some music at the end would be a nice addition to the video :)
The "cheap" WDT is still £10 more than I paid for my 15 yr old espresso machine, gonna have to stick to the needles in a cork lol!
Nothing wrong with needles in a cork! Holy smokes that's a bargain machine though, aha
@@LifestyleLab_ yeah, and it came with a second machine for spares, and has worked perfectly for over 2 years! Francis Francis X1 - built to last 😁
Hmm...a day after Kyle Roswell's. Also tough to go head to head with that setup (not that it's a competition...or is it?)
I’ll take a Decent over Slayer any day of the week. That P100 though…. 😍
@@LifestyleLab_ heh. I guess I get to have an opinion coming from a Decent DE1 to a Slayer. Obviously the Decent is the most versatile option but in terms of taste in the cup, if you're into flow profiling I still feel the Slayer kicks butt. It's also much more of a tactile experience than the Decent. I mostly hated the sound of the Decent, didn't give me a feeling of making Espresso. Dare I say, made me feel like I was making Nespresso LOL.
But yeah that P100, if only it was easily available!
Can’t argue that the Decent is a pretty soulless experience next to a Slayer!
@@LifestyleLab_ the Decent is also half the size so it's probably the right option for almost 95% of folks out there. That being said, I hated how much I paid for shipping to Canada for the Decent. It was over $1000 bucks and I lost almost all of that during the resale of it.
which filter basket are you using?
Good question!
I’m using an 18-20g IMS Nanotech basket
@@LifestyleLab_ WAFO espresso spirit basket will blow your mind
If they’ll respond to my review requests I’d love to give them a try!
Keep coming back to x54...but that hoppers killing me
They have a lower-profile one now :)
Can you do a video on your breville setup?
This is what my Breville setup would look like :) ruclips.net/video/xiBK63yzOF4/видео.html
@@LifestyleLab_ question about the single dose hopper you recommend. Is it is used, does that mean that you don’t need to throw away a dose when making grinder adjustments?
Correct, that will no longer be required
@@LifestyleLab_ thanks!
That Decent screen reminds me of an office Printer 😂 it’s definitely not the experience I am after
Aha, I totally see where you’re coming from
Not a whole lotta charm from a Xerox espresso machine 😂
@@LifestyleLab_ I would be curious to see someone testing a more analog combination such as Micra or Linea + Cremina vs. Decent 🙂
@@toulcaz31 Brian Quan has a good comparison between Linea and Decent :)
@@LifestyleLab_ oh I meant more like if one owned both a Linea (consistent workhorse) and a manual lever like the Cremina (manual profiling), in comparison to owning a Decent. I have seen so many reviews of the Decent talking about the Cremina profile that one may wonder why not simply owning one 🙂
What profiles would be good for an ek43
Would depend more on the coffee you’re using and what burrs are in the EK
@@LifestyleLab_ stock burrs and medium roast
Anything medium roast id go with the Adaptive profile
Gosh! That Duomo WDT tool is more expensive than all of the 1Zpresso hand grinders!
On a side note: that link for the Mahlkonig is not working.
Thanks for the heads up! They appear to be out of stock at that retailer 😢
Mahlkonik grinder link is a 404 error
Check out the Profitec Pro 800. Not enough lever machine content on RUclips and everyone I know that has the 800 gave raving reviews.
Hopefully early 2023 😏
As an owner of a Londinium R24 and Decent, this. I favor the LR, especially for light roast. The shots are beautiful, tasty, sweet and delicious. So simple to keep clean, no need for puck screens and/or filter papers. You quickly get used to removing the scale and glass and not being able to stop your shots. And man it is satisfying to use a lever machine.
@@Lectuz Thanks for sharing. I'm torn between LR24 and P800. Leaning towards Londinium because of the quieter rotary pump and aesthetics
@@dparad22 Not sure about the P800, but Londinium gives you several parts to self repair with instructions on their own site.
2023-> Odyssey Argos and Billet Basket/Wafo baskets.
Ouuuu very interesting prediction!
Thanks Benjamin
In 2023 I’m predicting Meticulous with Timemore Sculptor 078S.
Great sounding combo for the $
Weber EG-1 coming soon... my prediction lol
Yeeesh, that’s one pricy grinder 😅
While I'm sure technically this year's setup is superior and produces an amazing end product, it doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies. I think I would enjoy using last year's setup more.
Hi Lifestyle! Glad to see you are also from Canada, I did not even know and love your channel :o
1- WDT Tool: I just received a new one today to replace the 3D printed one I had which was already very good. It is by far the very best WDT I ever saw and used, very affordable too at 40$ in aluminium with a heavy magnetic steel stand. It's the guy from (CafeFabrique) in Quebec that's doing both of these which I highly recommend you check. He sells other very useful accessories too. Since I have a WHOLESALE account at Eight Ounce with my business, I went checking the prices out of curiosity and there's barely any difference with the retail prices of the Duomo stuff, it is still way overpriced mostly when you consider (Normcore) does a very similar model at only 103$ though it has very bad rating on Amazon. I would personnaly stick to a good magnetic funnel and a quality WDT like the two I suggested above. The (Duomo Disribution) is 280$ to 250$ and they're coming soon with a mix of Tamper+Distribution at 305$ cost.
2- Tamper: There's already a bigger saving on the (The Force Tamper) that goes 280$ to 220$. I have the (PUSH Tamper) which is 250$ so still not cheap but extremely high build quality and made in england, bought at Eight Ounce 3 years ago. Some people complain about flat tampers saying that you constantly need to adjust them but I've never found it to be the case. I always use the same 20g basket because why would I switch basket if I would then need to recalibrate all my beans?! I'm single dosing with 2 variety every day in a (Ceado E37SD). Yes there is a slight difference when I push down if there is a big variation in the grind size between my 2 type of coffees but nothing major at all and it is far more ergonomic and you can't ever push side-way the way it is designed.
The guy at Decent said his studies shown that the perfect tamping force was 15lbs and that anything above was unnecessary. I would believe that as I did see long ago from WLL that there was barely any difference between tamping from 10-30lbs. For this reason I think those spring tampers are a bit gimmick as in unncessary and more for the feeling or the person that in his head NEED to be 100% sure about his consistancy even if tamping force has little to do. I agree though for the price I can't see why anyone would pay more than the (Normcore) you've suggested at only ~60$. I saw they had a FLAT spring-loaded tamper too for the same price. I did not even know it was possible to have a spring into a flat tamper, what do you think about it?
The tamper Decent is selling is super ugly, looks very dull and is way too expensive just like their funnel that is 4x the cost of anything online for some reasons as if it was made of gold.
3- Affiliate Links: Is it me or the affiliate link so you get a bonus, doesn't work for the Decent machine? Also can we click the link then choose to buy something else at Amazon or it has to be the item from the link? How much in % does it give you back out of curiosity? I would like to help as much as possible.
==============================================
