  • A chapter by chapter verse by verse study of the book of Proverbs.
Verses 16 through 19 are a very important and well known segment. I would encourage you to underline than and memorize this portion.
Six things, and a seventh, are an abomination to Him. The way this is stated is a literary device that is intended to put emphasis on the seventh thing: on the really important thing and to show that the list is not exhausted. So he begins and says six things the Lord hates. Now many people find it unbelievable or hard to believe that God could hate. This is an incorrect belief! Because, if you really love, you have to have that contrast in your life of hate too. Psalm 97:10 commands us to hate evil. “You who love the LORD, hate evil!” If a dog is eating your child, if you love your child, you are going to hate that dog. You are going to get the dog out of the way. Oh, I love my child, and I love the little doggie that's biting my child's arm off. No way! You are going to have that contrast. It doesn’t matter what the world says, or what culture says. They say, “don’t be a hater.” Well God is and I want to be too. I want to hate the things that God hates and I want to love the things that the LORD loves. The Bible teaches us to hate sin, to hate wickedness. The Lord lists several things that He hates. We should make that same list for our selves.
Most of these sins are connected to something we do, in or through our body. The eyes have a proud look, the tongue lies, and so on. We are again reminded of what Paul wrote in Romans about presenting the parts of our body (our members) to God for the work of righteousness, not sin. “And do not present your members as [ a]instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.”
This collection of seven sins is also focused on how we treat others. We must honor God and worship Him in spirit and in truth, yet God is also concerned about how we treat others. Each of these are serious sins against others.
As a child of God, I should hate the things God hates and I should avoid the things that God hates. In Deuteronomy, the sixteenth chapter, He teaches the children of Israel that He hates idols; He hates anything that would come between us and our fellowship with Him. He still hates these things today. Psalm 47, remember when we were in the Book of Psalms, He said that He hates wickedness. The seventh thing shows us-- the number seven being the number of completeness-- that this is a complete hatred of these things. He hates all seven of these things. Ecclesiastes also tells us that there is a time of love and a time of hate. We are to hate evil and we are to love good. The Lord hates six things, yes, seven are an abomination. They are a stench to Him.
