The most Underrated novel in my opinion "Umineko". Its in the visual novel format. Without spoiling its something like this: - think of "and then there were none" + Fantasy + Psychological stuff - metatexual - story takles Human problems/conflicts and stuff - touch of romance and drama ‐ mystery is its main focus (reason why I have to vague) You should definitely try it if you like murder mystery, mystery, character driver plot, and layers on the story. I agree, visual novels are underrated, masterpieces like Fullmetal Daemon Muramasa, SubaHibi, Fata Morgana, Umineko, Dies Irae, works by Nasu... I think they could even become literary classics, but they don't get much attention outside their
I think it's amazing how many of these authors, as well as creating complex and well-crafted narratives, have an absurd amount of study behind them, often through psychology and philosophy or even being inspired by classics such as Umineko himself, taking inspiration from The Divine Comedy and The Brothers Karamazov.
I know right? Even more insane, in the list of series mentioned twice, A Song of Ice and Fire was mentioned twice as underrated/underhyped. I feel like some readers truly don't know any other fantasy series other than A Song of Ice and Fire. xD
I'm looking forward to reading The Chronicles of Amber. I've known of these books for decades, and I'm glad they just released that nice 10-book edition.
I love the Greenbone Saga. I love the covers as well, but I wonder if they were changed, would it attract new readers. Maybe a scene from the book or an image of a character or the family all decked out in jade and weapons.
I love The Green Bone Saga, too! As you probably know already... But yeah, I do think Green Bone Saga needs better cover art. I'm not a fan of the cover art, actually. I feel like they felt so cheap and easy to make, especially the one for Jade City. I would've loved having Lan on the front cover of Jade City, Shae on the front cover of Jade War, and Hilo on the front cover of Jade Legacy. :D
"The Books of Earthseea" are on my TBR mainly because Susanna Clarke got inspired by "The Tombs of Atuan" for her "Piranesi" and I could not resist that illustrated edition. I hope that gradually Fonda Lee's and Jen Williams works will get more popularity. I read and enjoyed them thanks to you and I hope more people will give them a try.
Excellent video Petrik! I agree about Green Bone Saga, and I’m hoping to read Earthsea and finish Winnowing Flame next year. I’m actually planning to read Bitter Twins next month.
This video was very interesting I was surprised that Malazan is considered underrated. I'm in a couple of fantasy book groups on Facebook and I swear there is not a post that goes by that Malazan is not included in the discussion. Earthesea is another shocker.i always thought of it has a fantasy classic. And The Book Of Amber, I remember someone saying it was for children but I'll have to look into that one. I am curious where you got this list from. I don't know if it's because I watch your channel and other Booktubers that I know more than half the books you listed that I just don't consider some of these underrated especially the Greenbone Saga since that series won the world fantasy award.
I'm surprised, too. The data is compiled from Booktube and book twitter. You can check them on the description in the video. And yeah, Malazan is talked about so often on all bookish social media platform. It's amazing and crazy how it's still considered underrated/underhyped by some readers. 😂
@@PetrikLeo I appreciate btw your views on reading Earthsea. That is my least fave Ghibli film (minus the CGI one...oof). But the books are wonderful (though I feel the first three are the best). Never sure how people will take to her prose though. Some find her really dry, others just love the prose. If you don't have it already, get the illustrated edition!
Hey Petrik, great video once again. I just finished reading the first book of The Raveling trilogy i.e, The Crimson Queen and I think that is quite underrated as well. Because I enjoyed my time with it and I am excited for the second book.
Omg our minds are linked I just finished the second book of the earthsea cycle yesterday!! And I am utterly in love with Ursula Le Guin’s prose, she has already become one of my favorite author and I can’t think about anything else but these books now
That's so good to hear! I haven't read Earthsea Cycle yet. I'm not a fan of the Ghibli movie of Earthsea. Though pretty, the movie itself was pretty boring, imo. xD Hopefully I'll love the books when I get around to reading them! :)
@@PetrikLeo tbh both stories are really different so I’m sure you have a big chance of still loving the books :) they’re so good I can’t emphasize it enough!
@@PetrikLeo You have to read Earthsea. It is one of the foundational fantasy works for me. Ursula Le Guin is hugely important to the development of a lot of writers.
Sad to see Earthsea not mentioned as much in fantasy circles despite being foundational. I'll never be unhappy with a list that includes LeGuin, she's a master storyteller and one of the greatest prose stylist of all time. Tales From Earthsea is the only Ghibli I haven't watched, no need to subject myself to a bad version of a beloved story. I agree on KJ Parker, low-key one of the most unique voices in the genre. I'll be checking out Worm, first time hearing about it. Thank you for the video.
Yeah! I still have to read it, but compared to many other series, Earthsea isn't mentioned often. A bit crazy, considering how supposedly foundational the series is. I got myself a copy of The Folding Knife! And we'll see whether I'll love it or not when I read it! 😄
Thank you! If there is enough view on this video, I will make a final one consisting of the ones mentioned twice. But if not... well I think this is it for now! :)
If anything Malazan is overhyped, in my opinion. It's often given a blanket recommendation which seems like a recipe for failure to me. I am loving it, but don't expect most people to, really. It's not easy to read, it's rough and exhausting emotionally, and it's super long, just to mention a few of the detractions. Totally worth it to me, but a lot of people pretend it will be to everyone's liking when it really just won't be.
Malazan as a blanket recommendation is really what's annoying about it even though I love the series SO MUCH. I think that's also why some people still think it counts among the underrated/underhyped series. 😅
Nice video! I do recommend trying Earthsea once. Hope you like it when you do. You know I agree with you about The Fall Of Babel. Its just such a comedown from the previous books. Still worth a try, agreed. Malazan underrated 🤣🤣🤣. That was a surprise to me like you. Winnowing Flame trilogy yess! Happy reading!
Thank you so much, Paromita! I hope to try Earthsea someday. But yes, The Fall of Babel is a huge disappointment for me. Glad we can agree, too, that Malazan is not underrated at all! xD Happy reading to you, too!
I agree with you about the Books of the Babel series. Perhaps we both and a few others are only the select few who thought so and gave it a low rating on Goodreads. The first 3 books were excellent, and the 4th one was so disappointing. It wasn't only because of how it ended... the 4th book overall wasn't of a similar quality as the previous three.
I'm pretty sure we're on the unpopular side on this hahaha. But yeah, other than Senlin's few POV chapters, I think every part of The Fall of Babel was a disappointment.
Michael Wisehart he has two excellent series "The Aldoran Chronicales" or "Street Rats of Aramoor." And Edward W. Robertson's "The Cycle of Arawn" and "The Cycle of Galand." These series all are way underhyped!!!
I really enjoyed the Winnowing flame series. I read it last month. Per your recommendation. I love the Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling. I just finished my 2nd rereading of it a few months ago. It is one of those that you can disappear into. I have Jade City but haven't started reading it yet. I have a current pile TBR books and it is is my second pile. I probably won't get to it until next year. I do have Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson series in my current TBR pile 1/2 to be reread and 1/2 to be read for the first time. I don't remember why, but I avoid books by Ursula K. Guin.
So many underrated/underhyped. I would mention three series Prince Of Nothing/Aspect Emperor (R.Scott Bakker) Under The Norse Sky (Leo Carew) and Raven's Mark (Ed McDonald)
I really don't think you're going to like Earthsea. It's pretty painful. I just read it for the first time this year. That being said, you should try because it is a classic. And I hope you can fit Worm in next year!! I really think you will enjoy it!
I definitely will try Earthsea and see whether it will work out for me. I do realize that many classic fantasy did not work as good as I hoped, though. And yessss! Worm has been on my radar for years now. Time to get to it next year! :)
I still say the Deed of Paksenarrion and the follow on 5 book series by Elizabeth Moon are an underhyped series. I think this trilogy is best thought of as one book, probably because I first read it in an omnibus edition. I'm actually rereading it right now, the end of book 2 of the trilogy still gets me in the feels, now in book 3 it's hard for me to put down.
I have only watched this video of yours , so far. But plan to watch more. PROSPERO’S CHILDREN by Jan Siegle? Maybe you have read it? If not , maybe it is in your wheelhouse? Let me know. I really liked it.
Amber underhyped? Absolutely! One of my favourite series, and massively influential as you said. But even as a big Malazan fan, it’s laughable calling it underhyped. 😆
I don't think I've heard of Amber until two or three years ago, and still rarely to this day. Certainly underhyped now! But not for Malazan... crazy how this is deemed as underhyped. 😂
I bought earthsea series in one big book from Barnes and noble in Memphis … bookstore where I live don’t carry it and many other books also like ship of magic , etc
For me, Richard Nell's stories of Ash and Sand are terribly underrated. I think if the series had more humor, that series could be up there with Abercrombie. I think Malazan is interesting because we generally like things that are familiar and accessible like Disney/Pixar Movies. Malazan is a challenging read and depending on one's patience and fantasy reading proficiency play a large factor. So, if it's not easily accessible, it's something esoteric and has its own sub-section of the genre.
The family of sorcerers and all the characters in David Edding’s The Belgariad and The Malloreon will always be my most beloved characters in fantasy..plus, not just trilogy’s, but,..five-ogies..
@@PetrikLeo well, you’ll understand why Harry Potter made lots of money, (because she got the temp, ate here, or, well, it’s a classic trope) and also why she’s a terrible writer (in my opinion) Garion came before Harry. Eddings’ writing is great in that when you pick up the book, you’re no longer holding a book, reading words, you’re just transported there. Mental imagery just unfolds. Witty, funny, memorable characters. It’s funny especially in the first book, he almost makes fun of the typical (well, now typical) “Land Of Ye Olde” even in style, then when the pretense starts falling away and things get revealed, the style changes..I used to think “the first book takes a bit to get going,” but now that I’m older, I do believe it’s all entirely on purpose. My favorite books of all time, (although Dune and Tolkien did make a big impression) including the ones that come after, like Polgara the Sorceress and Belgarath..oh..I have to find my books so I can read again!
It’s crazy how some series grow and wane in popularity. As someone who is was the book blogging community on livejournal back in the day, I remember books like Earthsea and The Nightrunner series getting a lot of love. Now, they’re nowhere near as popular, which is a shame.
It's scary and crazy. I remember Lightbringer by Brent Weeks being talked about insanely through all social media, now some readers think of it as underhyped and underrated. 😂
On the last book of the green bone saga and am looking forward to finishing it and getting on to something else, im interested to see how it ends but definitly not one of my favourite books this year
Zelazny has some of the best prose I’ve ever read, it honestly might be the best. I think some would fight me on that, but I’ve never read anything easier to read.
Eddings’ Belgariad and Malloreon are that for me..I describe them as “not picking up a book and reading, but being instantly transported to that world”..some modern stuff ppl gave me I threw down, you go for pages and just..don’t get any decent imagery..
@@PetrikLeo Honestly, every time someone asks for political intrigue book, my mind goes to Basso. It's not just politics- which is complicated and tied to everything and high stakes (comes close to Dunnett's The House of Niccolò). It's more because I'm a character reader and Basso is a complex, messy character you can't really put into good or bad box. :)
See I struggle calling any of these underrated or underhyped. For me, truly underhyped fantasy authors are authors who are often out of print, though their work is amazing. Lynn Flewelling Kate Elliott J.V. Jones Carol Berg Juliet McKenna Ian Irvine All these terrific authors NEVER get mentioned anywhere it seems, and almost all I listed are female.
@@PetrikLeo J.V. Jones, honestly PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read her in publication order. Why? Her growth just in her first trilogy is insane! Publication order: The Book Of Words trilogy (my first ever adult fantasy. Yes, tropes tropes tropes, but also...its warm and gripping and keeps getting better.) The Barbed Coil (standalone portal fantasy) Sword Of Shadows
@@PetrikLeo I was horrified. And I'm pretty forgiving with adaptations. They smashed 2 of the middle books together and completely messed up the plot of both. None of the actual themes were represented
@@PetrikLeo do NOT go by the movie! the movie is about as far removed from the books as disney is from grimm's faerie tales... the characters have the right names and the locations are there, but that's about it :D
Blood Song! YES!!! I absolutely love that book. Wonderful story with fantastic characters - Vaelin al Sorna (sigh)! Oh and I hated Earthsea! I thought it was just awful!
I've seen the cover art of Tamir Triad series circulating around for years, and I never even realized that's the name of the series. 😅 I have to give it a read, too, someday! Not even 1 out of 300 readers mentioned this series.
Malazan underhyped/underrated? In what world? 😅 I can't say I agree with that one. It's my understanding that The Earthsea Cycle is considered a classic, but admittedly I never read or hear a lot of readers recommending it or even talking about it...then again, I don't interact with that many readers either. Lynn Flewelling's Tamir Triad will always remain one of my most favorite and beloved series of all time. The Nightrunner didn't do it for me and I was really sad about that; couldn't get past the first half of the second book and not for lack of trying: I tried 3 times at least and read the first one twice in spite of not liking it. One element that might have contributed to readers giving up, in my opinion, was the way over the top complicated names. Unreadable names, impossible to commit to memory with several apostrophes. It was absurd.
I definitely can't agree that Malazan is underhyped or underrated. i just can't... xD Yeah, I think every time Earthsea is mentioned, some readers will agree that it's good. But Earthsea itself is a bit rarely mentioned in comparison to the other classics. I have to check Lynn Flewelling's books someday, I haven't read anything by the author!
I always say A Pattern of Shadow and Light, it's not perfect but it was really good, some fantastic characters and just a really well done adventure. RIP Melissa McPhail
Do you think there's a chance of the series being continued? I've always wanted to read that series. I was actually waiting for it to be completed because I heard there was only one book left in the series. Then I heard she passed away... Scary. :/

Agreed on Malazan, but Green Bone Saga might be a very recent thing since last year due to Jade Legacy. 😁 Number of rating and sales wise, Fonda Lee hasn't entered the "popular" status yet.
@@PetrikLeo depends on what your metric is. If we look at Goodreads (which has its own issues but just for comparison sake) something like Malazan book 1 came out in 2005 and has 105k ratings and a 3.91 average. Greenbone book 1 came out in 2018 and has 35k ratings and a 4.11 average. So in 4 years it’s gotten 1/3 as many ratings so it’s on track to be just as big as Malazan when it’s been around longer. But it certainly isn’t as hyped as something like Sarah J Maas so it all depends on the benchmark of “hyped”
@@RodgersReads Agreed that it depends on the metric. I personally think it's not really underhyped, unless we compare it to someone like Sanderson, GRRM, Sarah J. Maas, and Leigh Bardugo. As Fonda Lee herself said, words of mouth are what drove Green Bone Saga so much, so I think it is possible to see it as a series that's talked about everywhere (which is good) even when the sales haven't reached the popular status. However, I must say, I didn't realize Jade City reached 35k ratings already. Last year it was still at 20k ratings on Goodreads. Amazing.
This isn't my list, but I disagree with some. Obviously, Malazan is insanely popular. But some of these series are very rarely talked about lately now. The Ninth Rain has only 4,000 ratings on Goodreads, just as a simple example, after 5 years of publication. @@Pure_117 will do! I love visual novels like Steins Gate, 999 series, Phoenix Wright, Clannad, and a few more! 😁 I haven't tried Umineko though, I heard the manga series is pretty amazing, too. Maybe I should try the manga? 😀
@@PetrikLeo definetly choose the umienko Visual Novel version since that's where it was originally made from and has all the story the author wrote
Try the project umineko version. Or via steam w/ 07th expansion mods
Most of these are on my list, great video. I'll be getting to a few of these next year :)
Woohoo! I'll do the same! 😁
I need to get to so many of these!
Great video, Petrik🥰
Thank you so much, Holly!! I hope you will get around to reading them! :)
It's crazy that Malazan made it onto this list 🤣 Winnowing Flame and Greenbone are high on my tbr!
I know right? Even more insane, in the list of series mentioned twice, A Song of Ice and Fire was mentioned twice as underrated/underhyped. I feel like some readers truly don't know any other fantasy series other than A Song of Ice and Fire. xD
@@PetrikLeo no way! Next you'll be telling me someone mentioned The Lord of the Rings 🤔🤣
I'm looking forward to reading The Chronicles of Amber. I've known of these books for decades, and I'm glad they just released that nice 10-book edition.
I've known about The Chronicles of Amber only in recent years! No idea when yet, but I hope to read it someday! :)
The illustrated edition of the Books of Earthsea looks so good! I wish it's not that, understandably, pricey. 😂
@@PetrikLeo I was fortunate to find mine on a second hand site here in UK called WOB (world of books).
Excellent video Petrik! I agree about Green Bone Saga, and I’m hoping to read Earthsea and finish Winnowing Flame next year. I’m actually planning to read Bitter Twins next month.
Thank you so much, Chas!! Green Bone Saga is amazing. I still have to read Earthsea, too, but I can confirm Winnowing Flame is awesome! :)
I love these kind of videos! Also that roger zelazny cover is gorgeous!
Thank you so much, Hannah! Will try to make another one on a different topic! :)
Love these type of videos, Petrik. Thank you for expanding our TBR lists!
Thank you so much! Glad to hear that!! 😄
Thoroughly enjoyed this video though Petrik
Thank you, Michael! 😊
Thank you, Azu!! And I agree so much. I love The Crimson Queen!! Alec Hutson's books are so underrated and underhyped! 😄
Though pretty, the movie itself was pretty boring, imo. xD
Hopefully I'll love the books when I get around to reading them!
@@sorryman105 yup! Definitely will do. I'm saving to get myself a copy of the omnibus illustrated edition! 😄
Great video Petrik, thank you for some new books to read. If you didn't know K.J. Parker is the pen name for Tom Holt.
Thank you so much, Chris! I haven't read anything by Tom Holt, too! xD
Great vid. I’d love to see the ones mentioned twice. I love meeting new potential favorite series. :)
Yes I was quite surprised that malazan was voted underrated when it's not 🤣😂
Thank you so much, Paromita! I hope to try Earthsea someday. But yes, The Fall of Babel is a huge disappointment for me. Glad we can agree, too, that Malazan is not underrated at all! xD
Happy reading to you, too!
I would urge you to read Amber for sure. And Earth sea is a true classic as well.
Thank you, Peter! I hope so, too! :)
Oh I've heard about these series but haven't read any of them! :D
@@PetrikLeo I really think you would love these!!! You should check them out! I know your tbr is insane haha 😂but you'd love them

Thank you so much, Natalie! 😄
I love the greenbone saga glad that it's getting the attention it deserves
It deserves so much more recognition. Such an amazing series! :)
Guin.
Glad to hear you loved Winnowing Flame and Nightrunner series! Fingers crossed you'll enjoy Green Bone Saga, too! :D
So many underrated/underhyped. I would mention three series Prince Of Nothing/Aspect Emperor (R.Scott Bakker) Under The Norse Sky (Leo Carew) and Raven's Mark (Ed McDonald)
I've read the first book in Raven's Mark. But I still have to read Prince of Nothing! I hope to read the first trilogy next year! :)
I just got Deeds of Paks omnibus a week ago! No idea when I will get to this one yet, but I certainly will! 😄
I have only watched this video of yours , so far. But plan to watch more. PROSPERO’S CHILDREN by Jan Siegle? Maybe you have read it? If not , maybe it is in your wheelhouse?
Let me know. I really liked it.
I never heard of that series before. Thanks for the recommendation! :)
Niceee! I love that omnibus edition. So gorgeous with all the illustrations! :)
Yup. Completely agree with you on every account! Ash and Sand, to this day, still need much more hype, imo. Such an incredible series! :)
The Nightrunner is really good. I need to do a re-read and get to the last couple I haven't read yet.
Good to know! I might give it a read someday! 😄
The family of sorcerers and all the characters in David Edding’s The Belgariad and The Malloreon will always be my most beloved characters in fantasy..plus, not just trilogy’s, but,..five-ogies..
This is another classic series I haven't read! 😅

I may have to try again .
Eddings’ Belgariad and Malloreon are that for me..I describe them as “not picking up a book and reading, but being instantly transported to that world”..some modern stuff ppl gave me I threw down, you go for pages and just..don’t get any decent imagery..
The Folding Knife is one of my favourite books of all time.
That's so good to hear! I tend to have similar reading taste with you! 😄
Lynn Flewelling
Kate Elliott
J.V. Jones
Carol Berg
Juliet McKenna
Ian Irvine
All these terrific authors NEVER get mentioned anywhere it seems, and almost all I listed are female.

The Barbed Coil (standalone portal fantasy)

Tamir Triad by Lynn Flewelling is a trilogy that was very well done and I rarely hear it mentioned. Not sure how I found out about it.
I've seen the cover art of Tamir Triad series circulating around for years, and I never even realized that's the name of the series. 😅 I have to give it a read, too, someday! Not even 1 out of 300 readers mentioned this series.
@@PetrikLeo I guess that means I didn't mention it when you did the survey 😁
I definitely can't agree that Malazan is underhyped or underrated. i just can't... xD
Yeah, I think every time Earthsea is mentioned, some readers will agree that it's good.
Scary. :/
@@PetrikLeo I haven't heard anything about anyone taking over, I really hope someone like Brandon would as it's got a similar feel and flow. I hope it does, but maybe going to be a while as it wasn't that long ago she died. I always like to mention it as I enjoyed it so much and I never hear or see anyone else talk about it. It also doesn't hurt that the audiobook was Nick Podehl who I consider up there with Steven Pacey for bringing worlds to life in a way that makes the audiobook so much different to reading yourself that it has to be experienced.

Worm and Ward are simply amazing.
I heard from many readers that Ward is a huge disappointment. Do you agree with that? 😄
@@PetrikLeo Not at all. We got approach it differently tho. It isn't Worm, I found it way more character focused and not solely on the main protagonist as we see for the most part during the first work, but still with similar themes, expanding the incredible worldbuilding established on the previous entry, they combine in an amazing and rich story. It's my favorite "super hero/villain" story ever, and love how it subvert the genre. If someone reads and enjoy Worm, I'll always recommend them to try Ward afterwards and see for himself.

Hi! The nightrunner series is a beloved one by the lgtbq+ community, because it was one of the first to have queer main protagonists. I have read the first 2 and they were ok, fun. Jade City and Malazan under hyped? I hear about both of those ALL the time lol
Amazing.
@@PetrikLeo I’m one of those that still needs to read it. 🙈 I do own book one and am hoping to try it in December

Yeah. That's true.
Lmao what. Malazan is "underrated"? These people are insane 😂😂😂
I just can't see Malazan as underhype or underrated. 😂😂
Literally none of these are underhyped, lol
This isn't my list, but I disagree with some. Obviously, Malazan is insanely popular. But some of these series are very rarely talked about lately now. The Ninth Rain has only 4,000 ratings on Goodreads, just as a simple example, after 5 years of publication. The Folding Knife has been released for 12 years, with only 2,900 ratings on Goodreads and 200 ratings on Amazon.
Nightrunner is a queer classic fantasy about spies and magic and it's soo good 🥹
I will have to get myself a copy of this series! :)
