I'll never forget that pull-back scene where it starts on the guy's face and drops to show the unreal expanse of the keep. As a kid seeing that scene, it really freaked me out. To me, that type of "pull-back reveal scene" has never been duplicated since.
This was a classic. You don't need CGI all the time to make a good movie. As much as I think Molasar is way cool looking, he does not look like that at all in the book. For anyone's interest, Molasar true name is spelled backwards is Rasalom. He is described in the book as a tall black-cloaked vampire-looking dude. Pale skin color and black eyes. One power he has that is not mentioned in the movie is his ability to reanimate any dead life form to serve him. His main diet is hate, so you can see how happy he was when the SS showed up at the keep. It was like a endless buffet for him.
This movie and this music by Tangerine Dream are f*cking awesome. They don't make movies this good anymore. The music and the movie combined are totally mind blowing!!
It was the music and this scene that made it imperative I get this movie for myself after I saw it several years ago. It was, is, utterly brilliant in its execution.
A big thank you to Nikmagg and all the other users who are putting this movie so we can all watch parts of it. Obviously this movie is very rare and hard to come by, so watching this helps, it got me back into the movie all over again
Hello. No. It is the identical, trimmed cut. It was actually on British Netflix a few years back. Mann disowned the cut because he wanted the full 3 hours. There is one widescreen laserdisc, literally, at £149 Gold.
Michael Mann took the same liberties with The Keep as David Lynch did with Dune. I have read both novels and adore both movies. And Tangerine Dream is what Angels must sound like.
That underground scene evokes such a primal sense of fear and foreboding. Not just because it is such a long drop, but because there could be anything in the darkness...watching. When the evil entity attacks it reminds me of a shark swimming at you through the water whispering foooood! Something about seeing a shark swimming toward me halfway between the surface and the sea bottom is scarier than being at either extremity. There is a small amount of hope being at the top of bottom. One you can still breathe and tread water and the other you can hide (if you have oxygen). But being in limbo completely at the mercy of the creature swimming toward you while it has the complete advantage...brrr!
Before I found the actual separate soundtrack, I had this part of the movie on tape forever. Tangerine Dream was my 80s childhood. I'm sure I'm not alone.
i would love to find any copy of this, vhs or dvd dosent matter. i remember seeing this movie when i was around 10 and being utterly mesmerized. As i've grown older i've found that most of michael mann's films have that effect. I still find it entrancing to this day.
Why this film did not get the acclaim it should have, I don't know. It is truly the most mystical classics I have ever seen and enjoy it to his day. This is one of Mann's best films and a true masterpiece. Hercules TAK
and who knows, if people keep posting positive comments on it, and keep putting scenes from the movie on youtube, maby this will wake up Paramount to release it on DVD, but thanks again Nikmagg!!!! Awesome movie!!!!!! Awesome Music!!! combined they are mind-blowing!!!!
this scene was the highlight for me... i just wanted these two guys to just escape with their silver and live happily ever after. couldn't care less about the rest of the movie. Amazing soundtrack too :)
If you go through castles in Europe, the keep is the inner most sanctuary, and is built with the largest stones on the outside to keep people out. This keep has the largest stones on the inside to keep something in....
Man, I remember watching bits and pieces of this movie over the years, but I was only six when this came out, now I am 31 and I getting into this movie all over again. I tried to research it on the internet, but there isn't too much on it. But I absolutely love this movie and the music, and I would kill for the movie on DVD or just to find out any info on like the making of the movie or behind the scenes stuff. But great f-cking movie, really awesome!!!!
There is a really complicated, dramatic and nonsensical answer... just like the theatrical cut of the movie. I have seen two versions where the main difference seems to be color saturation and music mixing. No surprise to me that my favorite has the music mixed more prominently in this particular scene. I do love this movie - Michael Mann, Tangerine Dream and Nazis dreaming up their own destruction :D There is a website dedicated to nagging Paramount for an uncut DVD release.
Diego Guhrst Thank you for the reply. I saw years ago a video but dvds where still far away. The filmed used and the great music added texture to it made this movie ahead of its time. And Stealing of The Cross scene was memorable.I look ever forward to it.Best wishes.
A movie widely underscored - I have the remastered sound track and Gloria's Theme Track # 1 blows my mind away!! The track you hear now is totally totally awesome on my sound track too!! DVD must!! TD's music carries you into another world most notably in and of this soundtrack remastered!! GREAT MOVIE!! A 10+!! I have two soundtracks for this whereas the other is a copy of the Bootleg version although there is another version I don't have!
I love this part where we see the fates of Private Hans Lutz, and Otto Grunstadt fall into the hands of Radu Molasar, but I don't know what Lutz was thinking that he was stupid to let out the evil, in the novel Otto survived longer until one night or so when Woermann went to check on him died, :( as I read the novel or not actually read it listened to the audiobook what how he died,
According to IMDB a movie called "The Keep" is coming out in 2009. I don't know if it's a remake but that would be interesting. But this is a little off subject but the another book by Paul Wilson (same person who wrote the keep) is in the works.
The cross wasn't really silver nor was it really s cross...it was on the cap stone to rasalom s prison and he used his ability to make private Lutz think it was pure silver....he used human greed to set himself free
I've always loved Michael Mann's films. This was a brilliant film. Maybe made even better because of the use of Tangerine Dream for the sountrack. Listen to Logos - Live At The Dominion.
They don't make them like this anymore. The atmosphere is chilling and the music inviting. An underrated classic. I watched 'Overlord' (2018) recently and I wished they went down this route with a blown out zombie apocalypse. They can't recreate this atmosphere. Is it that hard?
I always thought that their soundtracks for the films "Legend" & "Miracle Mile" were pretty classic and worthy of reverence as well. Anyhow, I have a soundtrack re-mastered for this movie and I await the release of this on DVD when ever that might be. If only they would have had at least one Tiger Tank in that small platoon it would have even made more entertaining. But oh well. I like the film and the music.
@Aaarby Why is this great film not on DVD yet? What does Paramount need to have done in order for them to release it? Do they still own the rights? If not them them then who? I hope it never gets remade either. This is one of my all-time favorite movies.
Look at Tangerine Dream album Logos Live at the Dominion. Listen the last five and half minutes of Part I. That version is slightly different than in the movie but it is good. I'd like to have that movie version plain without the movie sounds and speech. I don't know how or where I could get it. Can anyone help?
for some reason, the rumor is that Michael Mann never really liked the way the final release of the motion picture print and story was done. Hell! that's what he should do then. do a commentary on what he would have liked at the same time how much every one liked it any way. come on Mr. Mann perfect oppurtunity for some good bonus goodies on the DVD. Scott Glen can talk about how buff he was in those days too
What is the hold up on a DVD release? I don't know what it is about this movie but I love it. I have the VHS version and it still looks good. Probably too weird for the general public.
Anyone know who now owns the video property rights to this film? Paramount was distrib., Mann was Director, but who has the property now? I would appreciate any leads. Thanks, KSR
Whats the song called at the very start of the film where all of the jeeps tanks etc are driving towards the villages, and the man lights up a cigerrete then falls asleep? Been looking for it for a very long time.
User Tobie1 has the OST links for the copy Bootleg that I have .... not the remastered latest release that I got imported from Amsterdam! That's good for starters!
@Aaarby "I've never found TD to be especially talented"? LOL... TD has been active since 1967 and they have influenced looots of bands and music genres. That alone proves you wrong...
NICE. I have an old VHS copy of this film. Where did you get this wide screen version? Do you have the DVD? I can't seem to find the DVD for this film anywhere. Thanks.
4:22 That pull back, revealing the vastness of the cavern, is one of the best parts of this movie.
Agreed

Totally agree. Every time there's a pull back reveal in any film, I always think how it's never been done as well as it was in this scene.
Lucky you, I've had that every time I've asked for a date!
Yeah I recently watched this film and that part blew me the fuck away. I've never seen anything like it before
Exactly. This film is an underrated work of art. Would love to have seen the director vision.

This scene from this movie is deeply rooted in my brain. It brings back such memories. Indefinable and surreal.
Classic isn't it. Pure style.
Amazing
Likewise my friend, it’s mesmerising.
Lord almighty, I wish MIchael Mann didn't basically disown and refuse to talk about this movie again because I need the original cut like yesterday
this movie was a total psychedelic lovecraft movie; tangerine dream has some great soundtracks -- one of my favourite is for the movie Sorcerer
Sorcerer is an awesome movie on its self aswell....
Oh yeah they did the soundtrack I had totally forgotten
And Thief, another Michael Mann film.
I can watch this movie over and over! It's absolutey timeless! Just another example of Michael Mann's genius!!
And suddenly a riveted audience to the greatest movie of all time
I remember this scene from when i was a kid in the 80's. Scared the shit outta me. Memories
The book is still one of my favorites. Hard to make a movie of it and this movie was still very good considering it was made in the early 80's.
A big thank you to Nikmagg and all the other users who are putting this movie so we can all watch parts of it. Obviously this movie is very rare and hard to come by, so watching this helps, it got me back into the movie all over again
absolutely awesome film. haunting atmospheric foreboding and dark. music from td 2 add to the tension and suspense throughout the film a classic.
I remember this all those years ago. Most chilling scene ever.
I still have the Laserdisc. Worth it's weight in gold.
Was that one a longer cut?
Hello. No. It is the identical, trimmed cut. It was actually on British Netflix a few years back. Mann disowned the cut because he wanted the full 3 hours. There is one widescreen laserdisc, literally, at £149
Gold.
On eBay just now. Ultra rare.
I think I'll just get it anyway. 👍😎
Pure gold 😯
thanx dude ^^ i posted it just because it thrilled me. it gave me the shivers... really awesome scene..
Even if Lutz survived and got his silver, he would have had a hard time explaining to Woermann about his act of vandalism to the Keep's walls.
"Are you ready to be rich?"
"Always."
This line has always stuck with me...
I remember that movie when I was younger I like that soundtrack that went on in the background in all of his movies
The movie and this piece of the score from Tangerine Dream is absolutely beautiful. I hope the guys doing the remake are taking notes.
Goosebumps every time.
"Nickel..... yeeeesss... nickel...... but not this one!"
greed.. one of the seven deadlies!
Just imagine, John Carpenter, HIMSELF remaking this "CLASSIC"!! Dark and truly Macabre!!
Definitely my favourite scene. The song is really stunning. I saw the movie yesterday (for the first time) and still must think about it.
This was my favorite scene the sound track is so 80's

This is a prime candidate for a good remake.

According to IMFDB it is indeed a MP28. It struck me as odd that the only pistol was a PPK. In the novel, Woermann clearly carried a Luger.
