    This system was replaced in front line service by the US nearly 30 years ago. It was designed in the 60s. It was mostly mounted on vehicles. It was supposed to defend against low level air threats. In reality it ended up being used mainly as a ground support weapon on vehicles because of its high rate of fire and ability to tear apart infantry and lightly armored vehicles.

      I expect this has a far more modern FCS over the original VADS. We'll also likely see a resurgence of systems like this to cheaply deal with the large-scale proliferation of drones.

    The VADS was a system developed by the US during the Vietnam conflict. They were mounted on an armored platform as a mobile unit. The US Navy took this and mounted it shipboard for testing. When I served in the USS Coontz in 1976 we had one mounted mid ship port side and I remember a number of live fire exercises with it. This system is now the beloved Phalanx CIWS.

  • @ziongite
    @ziongite 3 года назад +9

    BTW this isn't seriously what Japan uses as air defence, this was something Japan saw as useful only back during 1950-1960's. In fact Japan relaunched it's missile program in the late 1960's and the plan was to replace all this old junk that obviously doesn't work on new aircraft. The missiles were completed at the start of the 1980's, this is when Japan's type 81 short range missile was completed, as well as Japan's type 91 mobile SAM in the 1990's. At this point the old Vulcan you see here and other things like the 35mm Oerlikon that Japan had were considered redundant weapons and are currently only in Japan's retired arsenal, they are displayed at shows like this for fun.
    Since then Japan had made more missiles types and systems as well, for example the type 11 short ranged SAM was made to replace the type 81 short range SAM, this was completed in 2011. Then you also have Japan's most powerful system, the Chu-Sam system, a medium ranged anti-air missile, this is incredibly high performance and when Japan took it to the USA for testing at the white sands facility (since Japan doesn't have enough room in Japan to test it), it hit every target, including a supersonic 163A Coyote, it says US personnel were shocked at the Japanese missile performance in destroying all targets. This Chu-Sam is Japan's most advanced anti-air missile.
    Additionally there are improved versions of the old type 81 short range SAM, basically to keep it in service there was a type 81-B and today it's the type 81-C. This is just to increase the overall arsenal.
    There is also a type 93 system, which is basically the type 91 mobile SAM's, but it's instead built onto the back of a Toyota truck and the firing is controlled all by computer inside the vehicle.
    Therefore in total, Japan has 5 active anti-air missile systems currently in service.

      Dont discount such systems yet, with the advent of massed drone swarms like in the 2020 Karabakh war where individual drones costed less than the SAMs shooting at them, AA artillery is about to make a big comeback. At least until lasers are cheap and powerful enough to take their place.

      This is a training exercise, and these guys are obviously new recruits or just learning this weapons system, you can tell by the way they break in and out of formation, its sloppy. Japanese SDF regulars are crisp and look professional at all times, that's how you can tell. They are going to make them do this 100s of times until they can load that thing and gear up in under 30 seconds.

      @@Consequator yes but the cwis can automatically track and engage incoming targets including missiles and bombs without the crew being anywhere near the emplacement. It's a huge advantage since the first targets during a strike tend to be the air defense systems. For the what is essentially the last line of defense against a strike, you really do need one of the ciws or c-ram systems

    • @raptor2265
      @raptor2265 3 года назад +1

      @@asancoon2363 CIWS requires an enormous support platform, the most compact of which is about the size of a semi truck trailer, and is incredibly expensive to run and operate.
      No doubt they have some C-RAM emplacements at those bases, but if you're simply trying to shoot down aircraft and not missiles or bombs, this is a better option to cover a larger area. Plus, a larger volume of fire from multiple locations vs fire from only 1 or 2 emplacement helps provide a more solid defense.

    Damn, this comment section is full of smartasses saying that an attack would have been finished by the time that it's loaded don't seem to understand that:
    1. The gun would be loaded in a combat zone
    2. They would have detected an enemy air attack at least 15 minutes before the jets actually reach strike distance of the airfield. The soldiers only need 3 minutes to load that 700 round belt. Giving them an extra 12 minutes to prepare.
    And no, they wouldn't need to use them in enemy territory since they're a self-defense force.
