Thanks Justin, a very Happy New Year to you too! Atb, Simon.
Best shot was the rover. I love that thing. 🤣🤣 Love the content Simon. 👌 Ace work.
Nice paddle Simon, Buxton mill and upstream is almost dream like if you get up that far.....happy new year
Thanks Scott, I haven’t paddled that far, I’ve been on the Bure before but only as far as the section where the railway line runs alongside the river - just before Buxton. I’ll explore further!! Thanks for the heads up! 👍 Atb, Simon.
Beautiiful canoe. I would like to see that in an adventure in the real wild.
Me too! Sadly, there is very little real wilderness any more in my neck of the woods! I hope to explore some of the Scottish rivers and lochs some day - there’s a bit more wilderness north of the border! Thanks for watching Nicki, Atb, Simon.
Fantastic looking canoe Simon - great job. And thanks for sharing another great video...
Thanks Joe! It was really nice to get out on the river especially when it is nice and quiet. Cheers, Simon.
loverly paddle on the river! Totally agree with you about making videos and it pushing you to try different things :) Happy new year Simon, look forward to seeing whats to come.
Cheers Andy, Happy New Year to you too mate! I’m excited for 2018, lots in the pipeline - looking forward to seeing what’s on offer from your channel too buddy! 👍 Atb, Simon.

Atb
Paul
Thanks Paul! I almost had the river to myself - I think the rest of Norfolk were nursing hangovers! Atb mate, Simon.
Beautiful river - as always I love that canoe!!!! Take care.
Thanks buddy! Happy New Year, Atb, Simon.
Happy new year Simon, that looks great, it brings me back to my childhood of canoeing all the time, River and sea. I’ve got to get out and about more it’s making me have itchy feet watching your vids lol. I’ve been to most of the same places as your vids as I must live locally to you. Keep up the great vids mate looking forwards to the next
Thanks Lee, a very Happy New Year to you too! Can’t beat a splash about in the river! I’m in S Norfolk, so pretty central to a lot of nice paddling rivers. 👍 Atb, Simon.
Simon, a bloke in the woods I’m from lowestoft grew up in corton. Not been on the broads either for years. Got a feeling this year it will change.
Great video as always Simon. I'm not brave enough to upload stuff but I do take my hat off to those who do. Fab looking canoe. ATB.
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it! Atb, Simon.
Loved it all that peace and quiet bUT it made me feel cold
Hahaha - it was a chilly morning! Thanks Tony.
Thank you Simon . Another very inspiring vlog and beautifully shot. Happy New Year !
Thank you Martyn, there’s something about the light on the water that makes the video come out well! Happy New Year! Atb, Simon.
Happy New Year! There is something about getting up and doing something on New Year's morning, while the world mostly sleeps. Good on you. That is a superb looking canoe, fairly light too by the look of it. Atb, rich.
Thanks Rich, Happy NewYear! Totally agree with you and the river was nice and quiet as a consequence! The canoe is really light - only 29kg, so no problem for portaging and super manoeuvrable on the water, I had (still have!) a heavy plastic canoe, that’s like paddling a shipping container in comparison! Cheers and Atb, Simon.
I've just found your channel in the last week I wish it wasn't because of the social distancing but alas I'm glad I did I've learned a ton already in only a week.
P.S. I live in the states and I really appreciate you showing me parts of the world which I may otherwise never see.
Thanks Timmothy!
Stay safe and keep well. 👍
Happy New Year, Simon! Wonderful work. I'll be re-watching this and dreaming of such gentle waters. Frozen solid here in the Adirondacks, where we are expecting a high of -9F and low of -31F on Saturday. Enjoy that flowing Norfolk water, you lucky dog!
Brrrrrrrrrrr!!! Certainly need your woolly hat on Saturday then!! Thanks Donald, Atb, Simon.
Happy New Year! A nice relaxing video , enjoyed it and turkey sandwiches after xmas are the way forward (I had them for 3 days after boxing day lol), your passion for the outdoors shines through on all your videos. Keep em coming , Thanks!
Cheers Chris! Happy New Year to you! That was pretty much the last of the turkey and to be honest I’m a bit turkeyey out! Haha! Glad you enjoyed the video mate! Atb, Simon.
I just love your canoe videos Simon :D Very enjoyable to watch. Atb
Thank you Bjarke! Glad you enjoyed it buddy! Atb, Simon.
Awesome video... That canoe is beautiful! I agree, since I started my channel making videos has got me out trying lots of new stuff... have to love it!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it - that canoe is my absolute pride and joy - love it! Here’s to a new year of trying out new stuff and sharing on RUclips! Atb, Simon.
Your canoe Simon is a thing of great beauty and looks very much at home on the Bure. A thoroughly enjoyable watch and listen. Superbly put together. Happy New Year Simon :)
Thanks Paul! Glad you enjoyed it mate! Happy New Year to you too! Atb, Simon.
Excellent Stuff...Tranquil yet Exhilarating, informative viewing...just bought a Canoe and will be doing all of this...Stour, Ouse, Waveney, Broads...Inspirational and an online reconnaissance service - very much obliged.
Thanks Brandon! We’ve got some wonderful rivers in this neck of the woods! I’ll have a video up soon where I’m on the Waveney again - a multi day trip, camping with Andy from Kent Survival - it was a great trip!
Brilliant...look forward to it!
Great to see someone from Norfolk making these kind of videos, the broads are a wonderful place and i look forward to watching more canoeing...especially as im getting a canoe to also explore the Bure/Broads in 2018....subbed
Cheers and thanks for the sub! A perfect way to explore the waterways - might bump into you someday on the river! Happy Paddling! Atb, Simon.
Nice vid to start the new year Simon looking forward to see what vids you come up with. Have a great new year atb. Alb
Thanks Alb! Lots of plans for 2018 - can’t wait! Cheers mate,Simon.
Happy and Healthy New Year.
Thank you - a very happy New Year to you too!! Atb, Simon.
Wonderful way to start the new year, from the heart video to your subscribers, long may they continue, canoe adventures especially in the UK are a real gem, cheers Simon, ATB.
Thanks Mark - I really enjoyed my paddle that day! We have such a lot of good water to paddle in the Uk, and especially here in the East! Really glad you enjoyed it! Atb, Simon
Must be lovely Simon to have those rivers around to paddle whenever,i go kayaking myself and down this way i'm very much tied to tides.Enjoyed your paddle, and that canoe of yours looks a beaut.Happy new year to you.Andy.
Cheers Andy, yes, I’m really lucky - there are quite a few nice little rivers around this area. I’ve only paddled one tidal river - the Dart - good fun, but as you say, you need to plan the route a bit more carefully! Thanks and Atb, Simon.
Happy new year to you too Simon, Really enjoy your canoe videos and looking to explore the same rivers in the new year ( once I’ve bought my canoe!)
Cheers Martin - Happy New Year to you too! There are so many to choose from, but all good! Atb, Simon.
Just wanted to say a massive thanks for all your videos, Simon. As a Norfolk boy now in Sydney it's great to see the old place again. Love your work.
Thanks Stuart! 👍🛶
Bonjour from Fr.! Nothing more beautiful then réflection of clouds or trees on the water! Thanks a lot for the escape and the journey. Can't believe all the work behind these beautiful images. Just miss the smell of the water and the grass ;0)
I discover your channel with '' a steak for mental health men'' : it's the Magic of RUclips.
Atb, and thanks a lot one more time, take care.
Merci Lionel! I am really glad you enjoyed the video - I love to be on the river - takes my mind away from the rush of the modern world! Take care my friend, Simon.
Happy New Year to you too. Lovely to see you have a proper car!
I was so disappointed (and surprised) when I saw MCQ had gone down the Jeep route!
Haha! Yeah, but I bet the jeep starts every time! I seem to spend as much time with a spanner in my hand as I do with the steering wheel! Wouldn’t have it any other way though- once bitten! Happy New Year!
Simon, a bloke in the woods at least you get around to fixing it! I have a 109" that's been crying out for attention on my driveway for years!
This year - this year I'll get it done!
Happy New Year! I just discovered your channel a few weeks ago and have really enjoyed your videos. Cheers!
Thanks - glad you are enjoying the videos! Lots of plans for 2018 - Happy New Year! Atb, Simon.
Nice video Simon, great start to the new year.
Happy New Year mate.
Atb, Paul.
Cheers Paul- Happy New Year to you too! Atb mate, Simon.
Woow look grate
HaPpY New Year Simon, great video, did wonder at the end if the Defender might be yours. We have Desert Rat a 110 exMilitary FFR soft top ;-)
Cheers Michael, a happy New Year to you too! Nice - can’t beat a landy! Except if you want to stay warm and dry.....or if you don’t like getting your hands dirty and loosing all the skin off your knuckles.......or if you want lights and indicators that work reliably........ or doors that shut.......should I go on? Lol!!! Actually I wouldn’t have anything else - I love it!
WOW Simon how envious am I? You built your own cedar strip Canadian canoe! Well as I’ve said so many times before, you are truly multi talented. How long did it take to build it? I’ve been looking at a web-site in Cumbria where you can be taught how to make/build your own canoe out of plywood. I must say I’m really tempted to do this but would need a Simon in-the-woods type person with me. Come on Simon, you and me in the Lakes making my canoe, how about it? 🛶🛶🛶🛶🛶🛶🛶🛶🛶🛶🛶🛶🛶🛶🛶
When do we go? I can’t think of anyone who needs their own canoe more than you do Mike! Mine took about 3 months, doing bits in the evenings after work and at weekends - it’s a slow process using cedar strips, much quicker in ply! I’d genuinely love to explore some of the lakes with you some time Mike! Atb mate, Simon.
Ps. I’ve just started ‘gets my goat’ I couldn’t stop chuckling!
Though I live in Australia, 52 years ago I was born in coltishall (dad was in RAF at time). Often wondered what it looked like :-)
Simon, old video I know - where did you put in? Off the bank at coltishall before the pub ?....
What better way to start the New year?
nice paddle through the countryside....whats your craft weigh Simon?...you seemed to handle it easily enough on that portage.
I'm quite envious amigo...atb...woods
Hi Woods and a very Happy New Year to you! It’s pretty light for a wooden canoe - just over 60lbs, light enough to lug about and responsive on the water. Here’s to a fun and healthy 2018! Atb, Simon.
60 lbs not bad at all, i think my 'Navarro Loon' weighs in at 62 give or take...she has a couple thousand river miles on her now and is beginning to show her age...lol...me too...take care brother!..woods
Beautiful canoe ! Simon, do you have any videos of the build ? I'm a keen maker and have always wanted to build a canoe. What make / model is it ? Those Cedar strips are just stunning
Rob Stone - Hi Rob, thank you! I’m afraid I don’t have a video of the build, I built it before I got into YouTubing unfortunately! I built the canoe as a hybrid based on a design by Gil Gilpatrick called the Wabnaki. The original design is 16’, cedar strip, coated both sides with fibre glass and epoxy resin. I added bulkheads, decks and scuppered inwhales in Ash. It’s a lovely canoe to paddle - strong, rigid, agile and light 27kg. Check out Gil’s book ‘building a cedar strip canoe - plans for the basic canoe are in the book! Atb, Simon.
Perfect ! I'll check it out. The inwhales look great, all the scupper holes look really stylish and practical for tying on to and carrying allsorts of kit, also adding much more strength to the hull. You really did an excellent job buddy, you've inspired me!
Love that canoe I have wanted to build one myself. I'm just afraid of the fabric an resign stage not coming out good.
I was worried about that too, but just taking your time and using good quality epoxy, you’ll get a good result! Timings are pretty important too. Check out Jason Eke here on RUclips - he’s a cedar strip guru!
Thanks Simon for another great video. I wondered what action camera you use and where do you have it mounted for your forward facing shots?
Hi William, glad you enjoyed it! It’s a GoPro - an old one - the Hero 3, and I used it with a chest harness in this video - it’s a bit shaky but leaves my hands free! Cheers, Simon.
The shots are great Simon. Your videos always make me want to get out and explore so thanks for that. I've started kayaking and I'm trying to decide where to site an action cam. Anyway, thanks again for all of the videos. Keep up the good work.
William Carscadden - I was getting confused William - I was thinking about a different video!! Lol. I have mounts at the front and back of the canoe - which can be used with the camera facing forward or backwards, I also have a mount on the central thwart and one on the side of the hull for shots of the paddle strokes etc. I mostly use my big camera on a tripod for forward shots and for face shots while I’m waffling. Hope that helps! Atb, Simon.
You can Pub Crawl the Bure by Canoe.
Now there’s a nice idea!! 🍻
What a nice way to start the year! I don't know the Bure downstream from Coltishall but it looks really interesting. Incidentally, you match the music to your videos perfectly, but who's the guitarist? Have a great 2018, Simon, and I look forward to seeing the results of your future projects.
Thanks Peter, it’s a nice river when it’s not full of broads cruisers, and the best bits are definitely upstream! The guitar track is a royalty free piece available through RUclips, I’ll check who the artist is tomorrow, can’t remember off the top of me head - might be Wes Hutchinson? Cheers, Simon.
😀
Hi there. What are your thoughts on inflatable canoes/kayaks for someone who doesn’t have space to keep a rigid ? Worth it? I’m looking at the gumotex palava maybe?
Hi Simon! I think if you haven’t got the space to store a rigid boat, then the inflatable ones are better than no boat! It depends where you are planning on paddling really - I’ve known a couple of people who have shredded them on protruding rocks and obstacles just under the waters surface. 👍🛶
How old is your canoe. Maybe you could do a video on the matince of it. It looks like it was built only yesterday.
Would this one be safe for my inflatable mate?
Oh definitely! No obstacles or anything to snag it on - gets tighter the further upstream you go! A nice paddle and a good spot to stop for a pint on the return if needed! Atb, Simon.
Simon, a bloke in the woods let me know next time you plan to do this one mate
hazzard outdoors - Will do definitely! Are you still doing your overnighter this weekend? If so, I’ll try and pop over for a chat and a cuppa if you like?
Simon, a bloke in the woods yes mate am out Sunday and Monday night....
hazzard outdoors - Are you on Facebook? If so, I have a page ‘Simon, a bloke in the woods’ if you drop me a quick message, we can sort out a time and meeting place? 👍
