    As a western rider, i wear a helmet, i ride my horses in a halter, and i dont like to run barrels that much 🤣 and i cant imagine not just going out in my everyday clothes (t-shirt, jeans, and boots) and riding horses. 🤷‍♀😂

    I like to think of it like this:
    Western: I use a shanked bit because they can feel a subtle movement of my hand, but I try to avoid making actual contact whenever possible! I feel connected to my horse when I don't need to use the reins at all!
    English: I use the most gentle bit possible on my horse because I feel connected to him when he willingly takes the contact because then he is always aware of what my hands are doing!
    I like how you pick on them both equally!

  • @victoriaolender6289

    I find western saddles much more practical for something like trails or camping. You can tie or store every gosh darn thing you need on a western saddle to go out for the day either to the saddle itself or in a saddle bag. I think english saddles are great for short rides and doing arena work, but IMO I'd put my money into a western trail saddle if I had to pick.

    Oh man the helmet part is so true though. I'm a western rider at a predominantly western stable. Most of us wear our helmets even though it isn't fashionable. I wish helmets weren't so looked down on by others. Still, I'd rather look silly to them than deal with a brain injury.

    • @SnowySpiritRuby
      @SnowySpiritRuby 2 года назад +9

      AGREED!!! 4 of the 14 concussions I've sustained in the last just over 6 years were from coming off a horse, and the only reason it wasn't 5 and 15 is because one of the times I came off and hit my head hard, my helmet prevented me from getting one. I never ride without a helmet, even with 17 1/2 years of experience, and if I hadn't had one on for that first concussion, it could have potentially killed me, or at least left me severely incapacitated (and that was during my senior year of college, no less) - getting spooked off from a standstill is still the worst concussion I've gotten (pretty ridiculous thing to cause it, but it is what it is).

    • @mysticthehorselover5979
      @mysticthehorselover5979 2 года назад +3

      That's why you could always wear decorative ones, like yeah black is the main color and makes sense for shows but at least on regular rides it's cool to wear one, my helmet is lavender with a horse head as the design on it

      @valeriebreidenstein8362 2 года назад +6

      @@SnowySpiritRuby I was lucky to wear a helmet too. My Haflinger bolted when his tail got caught in the fence. I fell out of the saddle but my foot got caught in the stirrup. I got hit on the head by my horses hoof. I'm happy that I wore a helmet or else bad things could have happened.

    • @glorygracek.1841

      They do make a helmet that has a cowboy hat built in! They do look a little funny though, like a cowboy hat but instead of a normal or decorative hat band, there is a bulky black plastic disc/strap there. They also make some fun helmets with some western designs on them.

    • @laurareyes7040
      @laurareyes7040 2 года назад +1

      True, I kinda agree. I switch every time between hats and helmets, I know how my horses are though. To me I think if you know how your horse is that's all that matters. I agree though.

    I much prefer a loose rein and a relaxed horse, I like jumping, I like sitting deep in the saddle, basically I prefer the western style but english sports lol. • @lukegaspar1345
      @lukegaspar1345 Год назад +2

      Couldnt agree more! In english were Taught to rely on the reins way to much, most people end up building bad habits from that, like balancing on the reins or not using seat and leg aids AT ALL

      @@lukegaspar1345 You have been exposed to lousy trainers. And they are indeed out there. Sorry you had bad luck. Many of us (I hope) English riders have to jump with no reins, and spend hours being lunged by an instructor, riding, in a dressage saddle, but no reins. These can be grueling lessons, physically, but well worth it, in my opinion. But I am an eventer, have been for 20 years,, and we have to be quite fit, particularly our "core."

  • @cherylchild
    @cherylchild 2 года назад +97

    Ha! You nailed it. I do detect the very slightest, slightest hint of preference for Western and I agree. I've ridden both. When I took a trip to England and splurged on a day session at one of their most prestigious riding stables, the instructor was astonished when I moved my horse with leg. She actually said, "Wow"! I never knew you could do that. However, for my purposes, now at 75-years, gotta say that tacking up with English is SO EASY...even without a groom to assist (although the idea of a groom is very tantalizing.) I just have pad and shim the hell out of it for my Arabs and remember to run the girth strap through the dang loops on the English pad. The easy part is just placing that little light thing on their back.

    • @justgio2711
      @justgio2711 2 года назад +13

      Which riding stables was it? Honestly I find it impossible to believe that any riding school in England doesn’t know you can move a horse with your leg (considering it’s usually one of the first things you learn) let alone a “prestigious” one so I’m curious as to which one you went to?

    This is a cute summary of the stereotypes - which aren't cute - that divide equestrian sport and enjoyment.
    I ride recreationally, and occasionally go to clinics, schooling shows and gymkhanas.
    I have a variety of saddles and bridles in my tack room: all purpose, close contact, Dressage, and a side saddle; western pleasure, roping, trail, and a parade saddle; a South American Brazilian saddle and bridle; hunter bridles, Dressage bridles, a double bridle, a baroque bridle and a Bavarian embroidered bridle for SCA events; split ear, futurity knot, bosal... they're all fun and have their purposes! Hmm. Maybe I have a tack addiction... lol!

    I used to ride English when I was taking lessons and I did try Western one time. I think I’d like to stick to English riding and even have a go at dressage, simply because it’s better exercise. The posing helps with core stability and using the legs in various exercises also helps to develop muscles in those areas. I wasn’t getting that with the Western riding. The canter seems so much more graceful in English riding.

    I’m an English show jumper and I’ve only ridden western a couple of times, but I think for trail rides western saddle are better but for schooling English saddle are and I prefer the jumping and schooling side of horses so I guess that why I ride English!

      I ride dressage and and in the nature with an iberican baroque-saddle and I and my Shagya-arabian mare are happy. The saddle is larger than an english saddle so the weight is better distributed on the horseback. And the saddle is lighter than a Western saddle. It's also the most comfortable saddle I've ever set in and I've ridden a lot of different horses with different saddles (english, western, baroque)

    My instructor gets mad when she sees me without a helmet. One day I will accomplish my search for the right time to lift the helmet up from my head for a bit while my instructor's back is turned. She's the sort of snob who thinks it's an American that I don't euphemise it as a "riding hat". My mother acted like I was crazy when I said this to her, but she only fell off once in her entire career. I would always wear a helmet while riding on a tarmac surface though.
