Born in '71. Went back to my old Kindergarten playground where one of the original Fuller-sanctioned geodesic half-dome jungle gyms we played incessantly on in '76-'77, was present. By 2008, it was gone and the facility had been converted to a Montessori school. The janitor there told me although many people on the staff plaintively offered to take the dome away at their own expense and have it put in their yards, state school regulations about transporting school property and particularly haz-mat metallic structures off state property(apparently many of these Fuller jungle gyms were alloyed with a bit of lead and pewter to make them sturdier and more weather resistant), it was against the law to do so and the school/local school board/city council, would assume heavy fines/environmental group's wrath if they allowed the dome's civilian removal and relocation.
Despite all protestations including some local residents/teachers/staff(with more than a few who played on that same gym in Kindergarten during their time at the school), it was ultimately Sawzall cut on-site, placed in "state-approved" containers, then shuttled away in a scrap truck(driven by undocumented individuals), headed for Long Beach where its fate was just as much unknown as it was politically-guarded.
Although Fuller was powerhouse-mindful and weary of macro environmental concerns in his active intellectual stockpile and aims, perhaps the lesson here is that when an overarching and unaccountable state operating in pro-forma fashion, can and does create small and large collateral damage, just as much as it protects and serves the interests of its citizens and the surrounding environs itt virtue-signal boasts to protect.
Destroying a genuine Buckminster Fuller-certified(and presumably high-attritioning if other schools/govt agencies domestically/globally are doing the same) artifact honoring his memory and the memories of so many whose minds were expanded just being in such close daily proximity to such objects, may not be a world-ending offense. But it's certainly short-sided and non-circumspect, towards the apparently now subsumed goal of preserving Fuller's legacy which in a properly working world would be constantly evolving to foster each successive generation, to ask the right questions and pursue the best thought-out answers with integrity and reverence to the past-imbued vision.

If the building materials are not made of natural materials its not good for the environment. They may become tornadoes new favroit man made structures to destroy besides trailer parks. By the way a tornados will never destroy sacred land in less you build a trailer park on it or a cell tower.

I'm from Honolulu and there was an original Buckminster Fuller geodesic dome on the property of the Hilton Hawaiian Village complex in Waikiki. It was in fact the venue that was home for the shows performed by musician Don Ho for decades. The Hilton decided after Don Ho that it would be more profitable to tear it down and put another hotel on the site. So now there's an ugly rectangular box eye sore of a hotel there now. If you look at old photos of Waikiki you can see it. That's the priority of the venal and greedy people that control our world 🌎 😑

i'm currently reading his book "utopia or oblivion?" which is a collection of lectures he gave in the 1960's. a lot of it is a little too technical for my sensibilities but interesting nonetheless. in answer to the title question of the book - it looks as though humanity is going to allow the greedy and corrupt global elite lead it to oblivion. oh well. people are idiots. but i'm doing what I can to wake up people but I can't do it alone! nice little overview. well done.

I like the idea of conservation over consumption. Although the ideas about scarcity and lack are some what misguided, to invent something which is self sustaining is a novel and useful one. Fuller seemed fascinated by this idea and was driven by a revulsion of over-consumption and scarcity. He seemed to want to remove waste out of the equation completely. To me the looping sign of infinity seems relevant in his work. The carbon chemical named after him is very interesting as well. Shaped as the geodesic dome of his obsession and neutralizing and removing waste. Its like a tiny garbage truck.

I love people like this in history. They teach us that those "crazy, out there" ideas of intelligent people should be listened to. Unfortunately, the average politicians intelligence is so far below this, the change is often far too slow. Thankfully, technology is able to overcome most of these boundaries before politicians can even comprehend them. The crypto space and all that is happening in DeFi at the moment is an excellent modern day example.

There's one at the Hendry Ford museum.
There were only two ever made.
But think about trying to heat a thin aluminium skin in any northern climes.
      Think about the condensation too!
The 'deployment units' leaked like a sieve, and we're never successful.
Bucky had some great ideas, but he never had the engineering background to make any of it practical.
And the icosahedron dome was developed and built by a Zeiss engineer for a planetarium decades before he learned of it and popularized it.
Bucky was a dreamer, a dreamer of a utopia. And there's nothing wrong with that.
Please look up the _facts_ before you buy into the cult or become a sycophant
