I think many high tech led lights that sit close to the aquarium and are high powered are almost always way too intense at 100%. You should always start off at around 50% intensity and gradually increase that number until you start seeing algae. At that point you want to wind it back one notch.
It’s better to get some cheap PAR meter or rent a decent one and do some measurements, before deciding if you have too much or too little light. But, yes, the safer approach is to start dimmer and then slowly increase day by day, observing the changes. I would not reduce the photo period though. All tropical plants and corals adapted to have ~11 hours of light per day. They can’t utilize products of photosynthesis fast enough if you give them very bright light for a short period. Better to distribute that energy more uniform in time for a longer period.
I can honestly say I did not expect to watch a guy clean his Fishtank and enjoy it as much as I did… Goes to show that with the right music and good camera quality even taken a shit would be epic and enjoyable to watch. 👍
It's so interesting seeing this perspective for me. How an aquascaper has a very contrasting idea of algae with me, a microbiology undergrad student cultivating marine algae for my thesis. One of my friend even did use peroxide (H2O2) too, but on purpose to stress out the algae just enough to not die, but still be able to produce higher metabolic products.
FIRST again! ALGAE It’s an everlasting question how to get rid of them. Since every aquarium is different there is no exact answer. It can have thousand causes but it’s sure it indicates a problem in your tank. In the beginning I was messing a lot with the algae and to be honest with you it can still be a problem. I neglected this tank recently I wasn’t looking after it. I was suffering from algae for a longer while and even this video haven’t been about to be made, because I wanted to take it apart. But eventually I figured out how to give you some useful tips based o what happened. I’m hundred percent sure this video won’t solve all of your problems with algae but I hope you will find some useful tips and gather some motivation for the fight. Don’t need to be afraid of algae and you shouldn’t be pissed too. Just assume it as a challenge. So good luck guys, algae can not win!
I just sat down after removing some hardscape and boiling it to remove BBA that was on there. Turned it green - hoping it'll be eaten off by my amanos soon. Great video!

This video is GREAT ! Through the years of focusing on planted aquariums, i've had almost every algae one can get.....and even some unknows. With all the ups and downs i've come to the conclusion.... if you have a good bacterial set-up, chances are you'll have some kind of Algae. i don't use Co2, and i've stopped using the Excel-dee-hyde stuff, (not enough info on saftey.) One thing i've noticed is that once the plants have acclimated and are happily growing, the battle to eradicate any infestation is a whole lot easier. My main weapon has been H2O2 or for removable plants or cuttings, a mild chlorinated bath,(for the difficult agae.) Has anyone tried a tank made entirely of those lab grown sterile plants ? ...Thank's for posting this !

Thanks! It effects the bacteria of course, but not as much as people think. It is because the bacteria in the filter forms a media called biofilm, that makes bacteria more hardy then if they was separately. If you switch off your filter, -in my opinion- is a bigger risk, because lack of oxigen kill many bacteria for sure. I dont know which thing kills more ( H2O2 vs. lack of oxigen), but in my experience with H2O2, maximum side effect was a little opalescent for couple days, and some sensivite plants was hurted a bit, nothing else. Shrimps, and some fish species can be sensivite too.

Awesome video!! In my experience green hair algae occure due to a simple cause!! ...the lack of nitrogen!!! Plant grow is superb and all of a sudden the growth stop and something about 10 days after, the hair algae explodes! Can anyone admit?
Nice video. Yes reactive oxygen species like ozone and hydrogen peroxide kill smaller organisms. It likely did harm your plants too, but their larger and more complex structure allows them to recover rather than die. H2O2 is a natural byproduct of cellular respiration, and thus most complex organisms have enzymes to deal with it's presence. The smaller the organism, the easier it is to overwhelm and kill. This was an interesting example. Thanks for sharing it

Another great tool in the fight against algae is to set your timer for a two hour siesta period. Plants uptake nutrients a lot quicker than algae after being in the dark and you can use this to starve the algae while still feeding your plants. 👍
Nice Video, for me I was really suffering with green ALGAE and BB as well, I started using Seachem flourish Excel daily and that helped me to get ride of the BB but not the green algae, anyway I started bulding a new Aquarium and I needed the CO2 System and the light there I removed it from the old aquarium for two days no lights no CO2 after two days I got new lights so I took the CO2 and lights back to old aquarium which has algae I was shocked when I turned on the lights no algae at all and the water become clear crystal!! I hope this can help anyone facing the same issue

Let me guess you used tropica soil? I have the same filter too, and terrible algae issues. Maybe it’s in the bio media that it ships with? But my guess is tropica, because i used them in a completely new tub setup and it caused the same algae there too.
The video is epic! However, IMHO the key to 0 algae is a lot of shrimps and Glutaraldehyde as supply for CO2 and Algae killer from time to time. I have the 2w/L lighting and leave it on for 12hours per day. There are 10 fishes in that 6L tank, heavy feed, water is crystal clear never have algae.

If you have a planted tank and micro algae problem, why would you keep dosing fertilized and CO2 at all? Those would be first things I would reduce even before reducing lighting. Also, if you add several shrimp that start breeding, at certain amount of population they will consume micro algae faster than it can grow. I have a small planted shrimp tank for many years and all surfaces there are absolutely clean from micro algae. Plants doing well without fertilizers and CO2, they just don’t grow that fast and I don’t need them to.
I prefer you to switch ada amazonia for tropica soil powder because ada is tooo much filled with nutrients which leads to this....or you can mix 25 percent ada with 75 percent tropica ....ive used the same method and it works like a charm.....

Undeniably great cinematic and shooting skills. Hydrogen peroxide once decomposed is harmless as it decomposes into pure oxygen and water. Hydrogen peroxide WILL kill bacteria, beneficial or not. It is an antiseptic after all and used to disinfect wounds among other things. Also saying that "if algae appears it shows you that something is not ok with the tank" is unfair in my opinion. What is not ok is the person taking care of the tank since the tank is simply complying to parameters imposed by the scaper (knowingly or not) ;)

The video ended exactly when I expected Russell Crowe to step in the set yellin' "Strength & honor" & start taking out algae with his roman sword! But then I realized this ain't the Gladiator!!!! Seriously now bro, I'm really sorry to inform u THAT IT WAS ALL UNNECESSARY!!!! Lemme explain myself: a high demand planted aquarium is a unique equation of 1. light 2. CO2 & 3. fert. All 3 parameters have to make a perfect match!!! That said, u only had to find out which one of the above parameters was a mismatch. Was it 2 much light? 2 low CO2? 2 much or 2 little fert? Well, the easiest step would be increasing CO2 every 2-3 days until u could see algae slowly dying. This would be the CO2 threshold according 2 your other 2 parameters!!! The expert's approach though would be trying to isolate 1 parameter at a time & adjust it 2 your desired plant growth rhythm! This would have the added benefit that u needn't remove the live stock. I'm NOT trying to lecture u here, I just experienced the exact same problem not so long ago & I came 2 a decent solution following the steps I mentioned above. Some random spots of black algae every now or then is all that reminds me the time & effort I spent on my 70 lt fully planted tank. Made me much much wiser about the way high demand fully planted tanks really work though, so I STILL NOT REGRET IT!! Hope my story helped anyone in here. Go slow, go safe, folks, that's the way nature works!!
Beautiful video. But how come you dont use amano shrimp and a sae? They are killers for that kind of algae. I added the fish in moment i saw it, the next day the algae is all gone. Now, I only get green spot on the glass, but the hair algae is an endangered species in my tank.
great video man....I have a question, noting that the height of that tank is so low, could not be the problem the amount of substratum used....normally in a highest tank you could have problems if you dont have enough CO2 to burst the plants to consume all the nutrients....In a tank like this you will need maybe even more CO2 to consume all that nutrients stored in the substratum
Thanks! You are right, the substrate contains nutrients, but not so much, since it's Amazonia Light, that means it has reduced nutrient amount. Also the highest nutrient stock is in the water, because I pour fertilizers daily.

I tried out 50% light intense, but didn't help me, as I wrote it in the video. I never use this lamp at 100% on this tank.
You can find calculators online for the amount of light needed. You can also use a app to see the amount of light you have in the tank

Switch the height of your light of switch to low watt cfl ligh bulb maybe? Just a suggestion.
Let me guess you used tropica soil? I have the same filter too, and terrible algae issues. Maybe it’s in the bio media that it ships with? But my guess is tropica, because i used them in a completely new tub setup and it caused the same algae there too.
my aquariums are algae free ;) I recently just got some BBA because I went off vacations but was nothing to worry about.

The video is epic! However, IMHO the key to 0 algae is a lot of shrimps and Glutaraldehyde as supply for CO2 and Algae killer from time to time. I have the 2w/L lighting and leave it on for 12hours per day. There are 10 fishes in that 6L tank, heavy feed, water is crystal clear never have algae.

If you have a planted tank and micro algae problem, why would you keep dosing fertilized and CO2 at all? Those would be first things I would reduce even before reducing lighting. Also, if you add several shrimp that start breeding, at certain amount of population they will consume micro algae faster than it can grow. I have a small planted shrimp tank for many years and all surfaces there are absolutely clean from micro algae. Plants doing well without fertilizers and CO2, they just don’t grow that fast and I don’t need them to.
I prefer you to switch ada amazonia for tropica soil powder because ada is tooo much filled with nutrients which leads to this....or you can mix 25 percent ada with 75 percent tropica ....ive used the same method and it works like a charm.....

I usually put on the aeration after lights and CO2 are off. If you don't do this all your beneficial bacteria dies increasing the bioload in the tank

For 60×30×30cm tank what would you recomend 2 20watt t5 or 3 20watt t5
Try using UV filter it sure helped me, I have been having the same issue but now my tank is algae free

Undeniably great cinematic and shooting skills. Hydrogen peroxide once decomposed is harmless as it decomposes into pure oxygen and water. Hydrogen peroxide WILL kill bacteria, beneficial or not. It is an antiseptic after all and used to disinfect wounds among other things. Also saying that "if algae appears it shows you that something is not ok with the tank" is unfair in my opinion. What is not ok is the person taking care of the tank since the tank is simply complying to parameters imposed by the scaper (knowingly or not) ;)
Will this work on black algae and will it affect my fish? I don’t a spare tank big enough for all of them.

The video ended exactly when I expected Russell Crowe to step in the set yellin' "Strength & honor" & start taking out algae with his roman sword! But then I realized this ain't the Gladiator!!!!
Seriously now bro, I'm really sorry to inform u THAT IT WAS ALL UNNECESSARY!!!! Lemme explain myself: a high demand planted aquarium is a unique equation of 1. light 2. CO2 & 3. fert. All 3 parameters have to make a perfect match!!! That said, u only had to find out which one of the above parameters was a mismatch. Was it 2 much light? 2 low CO2? 2 much or 2 little fert? Well, the easiest step would be increasing CO2 every 2-3 days until u could see algae slowly dying. This would be the CO2 threshold according 2 your other 2 parameters!!! The expert's approach though would be trying to isolate 1 parameter at a time & adjust it 2 your desired plant growth rhythm! This would have the added benefit that u needn't remove the live stock. I'm NOT trying to lecture u here, I just experienced the exact same problem not so long ago & I came 2 a decent solution following the steps I mentioned above. Some random spots of black algae every now or then is all that reminds me the time & effort I spent on my 70 lt fully planted tank. Made me much much wiser about the way high demand fully planted tanks really work though, so I STILL NOT REGRET IT!! Hope my story helped anyone in here. Go slow, go safe, folks, that's the way nature works!!

Beautiful video. But how come you dont use amano shrimp and a sae? They are killers for that kind of algae. I added the fish in moment i saw it, the next day the algae is all gone. Now, I only get green spot on the glass, but the hair algae is an endangered species in my tank.

great video man....I have a question, noting that the height of that tank is so low, could not be the problem the amount of substratum used....normally in a highest tank you could have problems if you dont have enough CO2 to burst the plants to consume all the nutrients....In a tank like this you will need maybe even more CO2 to consume all that nutrients stored in the substratum
Thanks! You are right, the substrate contains nutrients, but not so much, since it's Amazonia Light, that means it has reduced nutrient amount. Also the highest nutrient stock is in the water, because I pour fertilizers daily.
