I just heard about his passing. I got in to work this morning (I work for his gear sponsor) and everyone here is in shock over what happened. I can't understand why these things always seem to happen to the nicest of people. he truly was a great skier, and if possible, an even better person. He will be sorely missed by us all here, as well as by all the skiing community. My condolances also go out to his family.
Why do double backflips on moto-x or sky dive or anything extreme? It never takes much to end a life but it truly takes a lot to live it in the extreme way that Billy and many others do. RIP Billy. You rock. And for you nay-sayers; I wish you knew half of what it feels like to hit something this big, to feel the adrenaline surge, and to experience the joy of having conquered such a hurdle.
I lived in Jackson Hole for 8 years, and I know this cliff very well. NOBODY skis off it, because the landing is blind and there are HUGE rock outcroppings. Watch when he drilled in on landing (augers really) and realize that had he landed a few feet in either direction, he would have died that day. Big air off cliffs into rocks is crazy. If you can't ski out of the jump, and you just end up taking a chance on a clean landing, then why do the jump?
It's people like coultrane that ruin RUclips. You get these people with terrible self esteem that were probably picked on in high school or had abusive parents and crave attention so bad that they say and do completely asinine things to get any sort of attention. It's really sad.
There's extreme, then there's foolish. I've over 25 million vert on the Big One and know how an adrenaline surge feels. Listen to Billy's own words. He doesn't know the area. If he landed a few feet on either side of his landing he would have died on impact. Seems that's how he met his end, and it was only a matter of time as this video clip demonstrates. It's one thing to go big and live. Going big and dying is just sad. Not amazing.

coultrane, I'll bet Billy lived more fully engaged and passionate in one day than you will throughout your entire life..
