  • Original airdate: 2/22/2019 | You have probably driven past an Amazon.com fulfillment center, but do you know what goes on inside? WFMZ Business reporter Justin Backover was given an exclusive look at how things work at Amazon's Lehigh County facility.
You expect your amazon package to arrive in two business days, but how does it get there? Well that all starts with the fulfillment center.
"Behind me are some inbound doors and that's where our products are being brought into the fulfillment center", says Courtney Norman, P.R. Specialist at Amazon.
From their products are moved to be stored and scanned. The minute they're scanned, they are live for purchase.
"The scan gun is your best friend when you work here at Amazon."
Once your order is placed a picker places them in yellow totes to head up to packing.
"I just love the rhythm that happens in [packing]."
But how does Amazon determine what items are going what centers? "Our purchasing teams will make sure that our fulfilment centers have the right items. Some fulfillment centers have unique items." Like this facility, for example, only has items under eighteen inches. "The innovation is really cool, yes but so much of what we're able to do is thanks to our dedicated workforce."
Most surprisingly people are involved in every step of the fulfillment process. People like Gary Emes. Gary says, "I don't even think anybody can tell you how many types of items that we sell here. It's amazing. I'm still stunned after six years." Which offers Amazon quality control at almost every step.
"We even have folks on the ship dock building walls of boxes in the backs of the trucks." ... Making sure your purchase get to the door in one piece.
"Our people are driving those customer promises."
