Kurtis made an excellent point too that the inconveniences disabled people face due to most things being made to be used by abled people is pretty high. People being nice to disabled people is never an insult.
I think the way people are "too nice" is when they keep trying to help when nobody asked ya know, I've done that to a classmate multiple times, and I fell so shity for it nowadays cause he was clearly bothered but I didn't realize it
Honestly, I think he miscommunicated what he was trying to say. He isn't afraid of people being "too nice", he's afraid of being pitied. I think this is probably a deep-seated ego fear that a lot of these guys have. They can't handle pity because they have no self-awareness or confidence.
@@logangantner3863 I see the point you were trying to make about being mindful of your wording. In which case you should have stopped talking after that thought, because the rest of what you typed out was simply a meaningless guess.
Something to note: if someone is genuinely struggling with motivation, self image, self esteem, etc., it’s probably something rooted much deeper than any “alpha-male-motivational-speaker” can comprehend or help with
On point, and sometimes the whole “alpha-male-motivational-speaker” shit is the root of it. This people prey on the young and radicalize them, I've seen nice guys turn "absolute savages" because of this type of content...sad, man...
that’s why therapy exists. yes, it is expensive, but if someone decides to drop $500-2500 on a self proclaimed “motivational speaker” then i’m sure that they can also afford going to a therapist or like a support group (which usually targets a specific community). also, in addition to what you said, they plant these messed up ideas in their heads and i am almost certain that they don’t help anyone in the long run, if anything, these alpha men are shitty, egoistic and pretty misogynistic too.
The "advice" that motivational speakers spew is literally the opposite of what any therapist would tell you and I'm pretty sure it's actively harmful to those who do struggle with it
As a wheelchair user, I can confirm that I am NEVER worried about people being too nice to me. People straight up see you as subhuman, going grocery shopping makes me actually wanna die

I'm so glad Curtis has stayed so humble after winning all those game shows in the 80s Dunno why he spells his name with a K now though. I guess...money really does change people.
When I was a kid my soccer coach pressured me to scream as loud as I could because I was too quiet thinking it would help somehow, I did it, and then I cried the whole drive home. He reminds me of this guy.
My elementary school gym teacher took my shyness personally too for some reason. If he called on me (his choice- I never put my hand up)and couldn’t hear my answer he’d start bitching and complaining that he knew I was capable of being louder because he heard me on the playground once.
Him berating that man on stage and then being like “you know when I’m doing that I’m teaching?” Is the same as when parents beat their kids and say “I do this because I love you” so disgustingly toxic
As someone with severe depression and who struggled with motivation for years, this guy actually does motivate me to keep going, solely for the miniscule possibility that I could meet him and thus have the chance to smack him upside the head.
Plus, we need to get rid of the stigma surrounding therapy. A lot of people in professional careers, like lawyers, avoid therapy as it make their records look bad.
This is basically if one of those dudes that swears bullying "builds character" took a couple of improv comedy classes and decided he would get rich off seminars.
"alpha male" sounds like boys who are emotionally stunted and neglected but instead of doing the work to identify their trauma/triggers just grew up into hurt men. the real boss move is to introspectively look within yourself and notice the shortcomings you have and deal with them and lean on others when you need help. A friend will always be there.
@@pepperchan6471 yea ur right, it's hard for others to be there for you the way you want. i'm going thru so much and i have to somewhat be there for myself so idk.
@@pepperchan6471 seek a professional. not a motivational seeker or weird people with 0 credibility trying to steal your money, i mean a therapist. i'm of the belief that relying on friends and seeking help with family can lead to more harm than good, because not everyone is equipped to handle someone else's baggage and it's frankly not fair to expect that of everyone at all times. you shouldn't be relying on friends or family for your mental well-being, that'll only drag you both down to the ground. you'll slowly ruin all your relationships by constantly dumping negativity on everyone around you and hoping to get positivity out of other people. you need to learn how to be stable and functional on your own first, and getting therapy might help you get your footing for that.
@@wrioculus @kirin I'm not saying I like motivational speakers or anything, I find them cringey too. However, a lot of people in my position CANNOT AFFORD THERAPY, and live in shitty countries where seeking help for mental problems is a huge stigma. I'm a minor, and am trapped in a abusive household and have no money. Lots of kids out there like me. Worst thing is that this is normal in my country. Services for child protection won't do shit. @@wrioculus that sounds much like victim blaming, also as the other comments said not everyone can afford a therapist, especially while being underage and in a non-supportive household. Motivational speakers are a lot like fake psychics in that they say incredibly generic things but their audience is going to interpret those generic sayings to apply to their specific situation without even realizing it so they will attribute wisdom or knowledge to the psychic or speaker. It's a natural human instinct to relate to other humans and relate what other humans are saying to our situation. It's a basic part of human empathy. Unfortunately con artists know this and they use it to manipulate people. Which is why so many people believe in horoscopes and those psychics that claim to speak to your dead relatives and motivational speakers apparently.

@@ChezzaOuttaNowhere such people are just very insecure due to failing to achieve what they desire, as well as feeling lonely and not appreciated/recognised by people. They get so desperate to get the attention they're unable to get with their set of skills that it makes them jealous someone can actually have it (even when it's mere courtesy) - it's similar to how misogynists always focus on how "men are expected to open doors/carry things" whenever there's an argument about women's rights, as if it's relevant and the "extra niceties" they bring up are at all comparable to the issues discussed. Similarly, they will find any excuse to think to themselves that when someone else has what they want it is undeserved, and must be due to (for example) disability, since everyone is "too nice" - they can't face the fact that they're just not good enough. They almost wish they were in the same situation as they know they wouldn't get the "attention" otherwise, convincing themselves that even mere courtesy is some kind of special treatment (that they crave but can't have), therefore demonising it and staying ignorant to all the issues that come with disabilities. It all stems from hurt egos that are too fragile to face reality, and it's honestly pathetic.

DUDE I'm so sorry. A teacher tried to do the same thing to me, too. I was like "if someone drops THEIR pencil you pick it up and give it back to THEM and THEY say thank you." I've been repping singular They pronoun since I was in elementary because of that one shit teacher, mainly because I was disgusted that she tried to incorrectly correct me lol. But I think it was a great coincidence, I ended up being nonbinary. I think it's insane that someone can grow up speaking a whole language where they regularly use singular They, and not even realize they do it. That teacher sucked, I'm sorry you went through that.
13:42 I've legitimately had a teacher exactly like this. Everyone hated him. He made the shy girl cry because she messed up a multiplication question just like this. She also got a kid to stand up at the front of the class so he could make fun of his appearance.
Same here, my 7th-9th grade teacher would love to point out how stupid and worthless people were if they didn’t get the full points on a test and got enjoyment out of berating KIDS for failing the classes because she wasn’t a good teacher 😭
I love it when a motivational speaker says not to be a "beta" and then goes ahead and says be comfortable with yourself because "alphas" are comfortable with themselves... he does realize that just because he's insecure about himself and hides behind a wall of "manliness" doesn't mean he has to get people to think the same way he does???
@Alice Kae I've never understood the logic of "alphas" and "betas". They kinda don't exist... Either way it's pretty dumb and funny how people can be so serious about this obvious bullshit XD
@Alice Kae Well for one thing, they arent "Alphas" at all. They try to project it in a "fake it till you make it" kind of way. But you will find many men who arent speakers also try to enforce that ideal of manhood in their own lives. I'm sure you noticed that the actual likely response of the audience is that they become less confident right? They are protecting a very narrow version of what masculinity is, and can be. I think fear is likely at the root of it. Fear of having lived their lives "wrong", or resentment that maybe this new generations will be able to follow their own true personalities when it hadn't felt like an option before, or fear of realizing that their actions throughout life weren't 100% their own, that propaganda played into it, society did, that they arent the only influence over their own lives that they thought they were. Etc etc. Plenty of reasons, even if they are still hurtful.
Yeah but i am sure you would not want people to deliberately be jerks to you because they think if they act nice, it would be insulting. I mean, people have to learn difference between pity and being nice but that doesn't mean people should be taught to act thoughtless like this owen dude seems to be
13:05 I had this teacher who was like this, he taught me for 4 years 3D animation in my art school and he always insulted me and humiliated me in front of others just because he could ,almost exactly like this speech guy…well and now I’m so disgusted to even try learning 3D animation again but I guess it was more bullying then the “actual” motivation (sorry I couldn’t help I needed to mention him)

I hate it when people use wolfs as examples of the whole “beta” and “alpha” superiority measures, when alphas are usually just the parents of wolf packs, they’re not even superior in strength. It’s literally just age.
I would think a motivational speaker would be in a crowd of a stand up act, and when the comic fails, the motivational speaker starts to motivate him. Everyone else will be like, 'wow, what a good motivation, I think I'll pay $300 to hear him motivate me.' Bam, that's how you start your motivational speaker career.
Nah "alpha male" clothes still wouldn't be shiny nor new. But yeah, this and enforcing toxic masculinity on yourself and/or other men are basically the same ol' shit.
not even to mention wolves dont even have "alphas" which makes the whole thing they based their rebranded toxic masculinity on completely incorrect. If you want to see the dominance and social hierarchy they talk about when being an alpha, a chicken is the best bet. They have a very strict pecking order and will seek to bully other chickens lower on the hierarchy
I think one exception to the "motivational speakers bad" idea is in the context of high schools. Sometimes high schools invite motivational speakers and it can do some good. Many teenagers struggle with anxiety, depression, fear of the future, directionlessness, etc. Sometimes what they need is motivation, to hear from someone with experience that everything's going to be okay.
That’s something I will never understand, teachers are just like the students sometimes, lots of them want validation from people less than half their age just because some are popular it’s pathetic
The comment he made about being in a wheelchair just shows that he has never, in fact, had to use a wheelchair before. My grandmother was in a wheelchair and people were far from nice, people straight up would not move out of the way for us coming through, and the stares people would give you for being in a wheelchair was absurd. That comment is so gross to make.
I've been yelled at and complained at by so many people since I started using my chair. People honk at me when I cross the street to go faster. I've been discriminated against at job interviews. Doctors have been dismissive and abusive. It's not easy.
I agree. My uncle was in a wheelchair for the 2nd half of his life and people were rude all the time and it pissed me off. One example: sometimes if he was going through a door/entrance people would cut him off, etc. He was always so chill about it though. That "motivational" guy for sure didn't know what he was talking about lol.
The only “motivational speaker” I can think of that ever helped me is Brene Brown, but also she does so much more than motivation speaking, bc she’s an actual researcher in psychology. And all of her work and advice are the polar opposite of the hustle culture stuff you usually see. All of her stuff is based in compassion.
I love Molly Burke, but mostly because her motivation speaking work also helps with disability advocacy and education, which is dope. It’s not just ‘hustle hard, make money, objectify women’ that a lot of speakers preach
I know it's a joke, but I've legit had several teachers that were straight up bullies. I had a teacher tell me I'd never meet a girl and I'd be stuck living paycheck to paycheck. I had another one tell the whole class that whatever grades they're making is the only grade they will ever make
Funniest part is that that “motivational speaker” was definitely bullied in school so now these seminars are just him living out his mean girl, alpha jock boy fantasy
14:20 it's funny that he's wearing the "please be nice to me" hat and, yet, he's being relentlessly bullied by his teacher and his peers. This says a lot about society.
My school had a motivational speaker who came in and told us teenagers to watch our weight and count calories. He then stopped talking, opened a bag he brought and ate one singular tomato ,not talking whilst he slowly ate it. It was a fever dream
I cannot help but feel intensely anxious and mortified for the people getting bullied on stage for motivational speaking. Like if that were me I'd commit die right there on the spot from sheer anxiety. The dude from the wheelchair part looked so uncomfortable and I just would like to give him a hug or something holy shit.
yeah it's especially uncomfortable because it looks like in the 54 minute video that he was up there for a large chunk of the seminar. poor guy, to attend a seminar by your 5 year hero in PERSON just to be singled out & berated by him :( I can't imagine that this helped him
I had a teacher once say “this class will motivate you to be better than you thought you could be” then proceed to go over an entire chapter of math in 1 hour because “if you aren’t smart enough to understand it you aren’t smart enough to be in this class.”
Dude looks like hes the substitute teacher that every class would bully and he has the nerve to call someone a 3 in front of a crowd of people. How did he not get heckled off stage

And yes, I know that one should not use friends or family as an emotional dumpster, because from a young age my own parents have unloaded their emotional baggage on me, effectively fucking me up.
So I understand if someone turns to Motivational Speakers as a last desperate resort. It is easy to attract and manipulate emotionally vulnerable and lonely people.
@@wrioculus that sounds much like victim blaming, also as the other comments said not everyone can afford a therapist, especially while being underage and in a non-supportive household. Or maybe they tried and had a bad experience (I got a shitty therapist [which my mom didnt even actually get for my mental health, she just wanted to get a paper saying that I needed a support dog or whatever so our dog could stay home] that costed hundreds and they literally just made me feel like shit and my mom got angry at me for "exaggerating" things. I know this was only 1 therapist and doesn't reflect on all the others, but lmao my mom ain't taking me to another one since she got the paper for the dog.
Also, saying that you shouldn't rely on friends or family is only your personal belief. My friends have been what are keeping me floating and alive. I understand than friends are not professionals and they are not equipped to help with your emotional baggage, but that isn't what it is about. It's just about having someone who you know likes you despite you thinking that you're shit. They just listen to me, I listen to them and then we play games together and forget the bad things. It's one of the only times I'm happy and having fun.

Owen strikes me as the person in the friend group who says "I am the most honest person you will ever meet" and then spends all night trash talking other people
Honestly he actually takes care of his peers. He is a nice guy who was bullied alot. And yes I was a fanboy. I have known Owen for over 10 years.
SO TRUE
@@mosesagabon7152 taking care of his peers doesn’t make him a good motivational speaker and doesn’t make his mindset any less trash
*cough* Onision *cough*
@@BigOwl51 i dont know if he capitalizes on common talking point or he genuinely been thru a lot but dude has taught me alot. I must admit tho over the last 2 years his material changed alot and he became a little douchey.

Danny wasn’t far behind either
what him saying 'what im doing right now, is teaching' is the equivalent of a parent going 'me beating my child is disciplining them'
Lmao yes I got flashbacks of my dad while watching
My parents
14:33 teachers actually do that. All the time. They do in fact do that
I hate it when people use wolfs as examples of the whole “beta” and “alpha” superiority measures, when alphas are usually just the parents of wolf packs, they’re not even superior in strength. It’s literally just age.
"Alpha males"- No, no, don't be an average man, be an *old* man!!
David Mech: Fucking THANK YOU
even funnier considering the whole "alpha/beta" rhetoric in wolves was made up too
And there are SO MANY other animals you can take inspiration from!
In that case, that motivational speaker guy has the hairline of a wizened grandpa, and we should definitely listen to him!
I read “bam” and thought you said “barn”
But good point
alpha male mentality is LITERALLY just toxic masculinity in shiny new clothes
Nah "alpha male" clothes still wouldn't be shiny nor new. But yeah, this and enforcing toxic masculinity on yourself and/or other men are basically the same ol' shit.
No one takes it seriously I feel like. I’ve only seen people rip on it but maybe that’s because I don’t watch Jake Paul who knows lmao
Yarp
not even to mention wolves dont even have "alphas" which makes the whole thing they based their rebranded toxic masculinity on completely incorrect. If you want to see the dominance and social hierarchy they talk about when being an alpha, a chicken is the best bet. They have a very strict pecking order and will seek to bully other chickens lower on the hierarchy
@@user-yf4ly2rz7q the alpha chicken 😂
I think one exception to the "motivational speakers bad" idea is in the context of high schools. Sometimes high schools invite motivational speakers and it can do some good. Many teenagers struggle with anxiety, depression, fear of the future, directionlessness, etc. Sometimes what they need is motivation, to hear from someone with experience that everything's going to be okay.
"Bullying isn't what teachers do"
Me: *Remembers all of the teachers who emotionally/mentally bullied tf outta me for just existing*
man, your teachers sucked. sorry you had to got through it
That’s something I will never understand, teachers are just like the students sometimes, lots of them want validation from people less than half their age just because some are popular it’s pathetic
Throwback to ninth grade when my "caretaker" assigned by the school threw me into the wall

Ikr. People aren't nice in general. Maybe to a St. Jude kid they'd be even half decent lmfao
Thats horrible man, I had no idea that using a wheelchair could be that bad
@@slimysloth516 it's not the end of the world, but it isnt easy.
I suppose Alan Watts probably counts too; his stuff is interesting.
is brene brown an author? i recognise the name
@@scarlettrg911 Yeah she is.
I know it's a joke, but I've legit had several teachers that were straight up bullies. I had a teacher tell me I'd never meet a girl and I'd be stuck living paycheck to paycheck. I had another one tell the whole class that whatever grades they're making is the only grade they will ever make
U good?
Funniest part is that that “motivational speaker” was definitely bullied in school so now these seminars are just him living out his mean girl, alpha jock boy fantasy
ruclips.net/video/tAnyvY6KHrw/видео.html....
14:20 it's funny that he's wearing the "please be nice to me" hat and, yet, he's being relentlessly bullied by his teacher and his peers. This says a lot about society.

IT MAKES ME SO HAPPY EVERY TIME I HEAR KURTIS SAY “A GAME THEORY”
My school had a motivational speaker who came in and told us teenagers to watch our weight and count calories. He then stopped talking, opened a bag he brought and ate one singular tomato ,not talking whilst he slowly ate it. It was a fever dream

I cannot help but feel intensely anxious and mortified for the people getting bullied on stage for motivational speaking. Like if that were me I'd commit die right there on the spot from sheer anxiety. The dude from the wheelchair part looked so uncomfortable and I just would like to give him a hug or something holy shit.
fr me too id be crying on the stage 😃
I would be so angry you have no idea
I'd be so embarrassed I'd cry omg
yeah it's especially uncomfortable because it looks like in the 54 minute video that he was up there for a large chunk of the seminar. poor guy, to attend a seminar by your 5 year hero in PERSON just to be singled out & berated by him :( I can't imagine that this helped him
Power Move: Tell him to shut the hell up, cuz his words are meaningless to you. Watch how quickly his fragile masculinity crumbles.
I had a teacher once say “this class will motivate you to be better than you thought you could be” then proceed to go over an entire chapter of math in 1 hour because “if you aren’t smart enough to understand it you aren’t smart enough to be in this class.”
You can’t convince me that Owen isn’t just an overly dramatic acting coach.
Acting coach? Nuh he's an overly dramatic acting loser.
Dude looks like hes the substitute teacher that every class would bully and he has the nerve to call someone a 3 in front of a crowd of people. How did he not get heckled off stage
