"Exfat needs additional software on Linux" what page is that from? I can't think of a single desktop Linux distro that doesn't support reading and writing exFAT out of the box
Does anyone know if it's best to delete the files that are loaded by the manufacturer when you buy a new storage drive? I'm talking about the Warranty and "Start Here" files on the disk. Should you always format a new flash drive in case there is some malicious software on it or is safe to use without formatting?
No need to delete the files from a brand new drive from a trusted brand. As for any used USB or drive, always scan for virus. If new in sealed packaging from reputable brand there is no need for formatting.
I just bought a Seagate 5TB USB drive on ebay. When I tried to format to NTFS, there is an error message "Windows was unable to complete the format". However, I can reformat the drive on exFAT. The reason for my trying to reformat to NTFS is I am unable to use robocopy effectively to copy my files from the desktop to the new USB drive. Appreciate your suggestions.
@@alarce129 Thank you for the reply. I did not try wiping out the partition. Is there any risk in removing the partition? What software to use, if you know? Appreciate your assistance.
I would recommend NTFS if using on Windows PC exclusively. My Seagate portable hard drive which came pre-formatted in exFAT became corrupted after my laptop BSOD'd while downloading . Windows now reports it as 'dirty' and I can no longer write to it
Please, the external hard drive is Seagate 4 TB, can it work on the iPad Air 2 (iOS +13) Is it necessary to format the external hard drive on the Mac in order for it to work on the iPad Air 2
Formatting a new hard drive does not do any damage to it. Generally you only format if the new drive format does not match your computers operating system and seldom will you need to reformat again.
Yes it will be faster, but this disk is intended for backup copying and storage, not for random and frequent file access. Games require a fast drive so even a fast hdd might not suffice, - an ssd is needed. Crucial MX500 500gb is the best choice here for a reasonable price tag.
@@olega5141 Олег, спасибо за ответ на этот вопрос. Я не геймер, но согласен с тем, что SSD-накопитель лучше всего подходит для чтения и записи. Oleg, thank you for answering this question. I am not a gamer but I concur that an SSD drive would be best for read write performance.
Yes, I had one connected to an Android DVR (Channel Master Stream +) with no issues. Just make sure the device can supply enough power to run the drive and follow Android manufacturer's advice on which type of formatting they prefer.
Hi, Can someone help me? I have HDD in exFAT format. I have changed it from NTFS to exFAT because with NTFS I had 4gb limitation like on FAT32. Also my HDD don't have FAT32, only exFAT and NTFS. Default format is NTFS, so can someone tell me why my HDD have 4gb limit with NTFS format if it shouldn't? I tried also USB and my USB default format is FAT32. I tried to change it to both exFAT and NTFS and none of these 2 had 4gb limit, so why at HDD I have 4gb limit with NTFS format but at USB I don't?
NTFS can support volumes as large as 8 petabytes or the size limit of your drive or partition. If you format the drive and it does not indicate full allocation of rated capacity perhaps it is defective.
Good evening sir , can exfat file format is prone to corrupted files because on my toshiba 2tb , the files inside it are corrupted after i transfer it from my pc to the drive.
While file corruption can have many causes, like removing during read/write operation, the use of Exfat does not of itself increase the possibility of it. Win CHKDSK can often resolve the corruption. Thank you for watching.
Performance should be similar enough, but it wouldn't hurt to look up benchmarks for all 3 filesystems in Linux and Windows as they're likely to be different per-implementation Something to look out for is the lack of support for Linux file permissions on all 3 of those filesystems, so trying to store games or other programs on them might cause issues if you try to use them on the Steam Deck.
Paulo, in order to change to NTFS you would have to format the drive and thereby losing all the data on it. Best bet is to transfer all the data to another drive. Thank you for watching.
Quick format is a bad name, it should be called "normal format". A "quick format" establishes the entire filesystem, just doesn't overwrite any old data. This doesn't change any functionality, it just means that the previous data on the drive is potentially recoverable with special tools. A "slow format" overwrites the drive with zeroes, essentially destroying the old data. It's a lot extra writing, which doesn't really matter for hard drives but can be bad for SSDs. A slow format will make the data unrecoverable for the average script kiddie, but it's important to acknowledge that it's still potentially recoverable by someone who knows what they're doing, so it really isn't even a proper security measure. The only way to properly wipe a drive is to hit it with 7+ rounds of random data, not zeroes.
Sir, I bought a 2tb WD and formatted it to NTFS then the hdd did not finish formatting and now cannot open and I cannot use it. Is that natural or is the HDD fake?
Most drives come already formatted, so a Quick format should have taken seconds. If the drive failed to format it won't be usable. If you can not reformat it I would just return it for another.

Thank you for sharing. Disrupting during a write function can corrupt the drive. Usually you can reformat to reuse it.

Why Quick Format?
Because it very fast, otherwise you'll be waiting a long time for a full format. No real advantage to going the long way.
