My external SSD is exFAT for my linux mint PC. It is 1 TB. As you said, it can be read by a windows or mac because exFAT is for all operating systems. It is good for dropping all my SD card photos. Then when I find my best photos, they go to the cloud.
Hi Amanda, I have an external HD that is 13 years old. It's plugs into the wall. I want to transfer all the files to a new external HD just in case. I have external HD that is 4 years old that I've never used. Do I need to replace the 4 yr old unused hard drive with a brand new one to transfer all my files?
Please definitely think of replacing the 13 year old drive, which is kind of old, which I assume is why you are asking about the 4-year-old unused drive. It should be OK as long as it has been kept in a dry, normal-temperature space. The life of a drive is usually 3-5 years when you are actually using it, so the parts are spinning or moving (depending on the type of drive). I hope that helps 😁
So, if the external hard drive is good for only 3 years, what would be the recommended repository for long-term storage? The cloud? Install another internal hard drive dedicated to the photos? Scanning photos, especially family photos is akin to storing them in the old shoebox with the false promise of doing something with them later.
If you are happy to save in the cloud, yes that is a good option as you don't need to keep the servers in good repair. But if you want to keep costs down and own you own stuff then it is an external hard drive, you just have to replace it after 3 years. You can get cloud storage that will just back up your data, even from hard drives, like BackBlaze 😁
You don’t have to swap every three years thats only if you are constantly reading and writing to the drive Daily if you are adding a few hundred photos a year and it sits in a drawer your good for way way longer like 10 years or more I always keep 2 drives with the exact same files on both the chances both fail at the same time is basically impossible so if one fails buy a new one and then copy the backup drive to the new one and boom your good to go
I just used WD 250GB, from 2010. All the files are correct. I think 3 years is far off reality. Have another WD, 500GB, also 2010, works great... slow but great. Don't understand how others have so short periods of use...
EXTERNAL SSD"kINGSTON XS1000" IT IS IN EXFAT AND ALL OTHER DRIVES ARE IN NTFS WHY IS THIS?(1*NVME INTERNAL)+EXTERNAL HDD 2TB+EXTERNAL HDD 4TB....ALL IN NTFS AND ONLY MY SSD IN EXFAT... I USE PC ONLY FOR GAMING(90% GAMING AND 10% SURFING RUclips N PAY BILLS).. So what is best...i got recomended to use exfat on my ssd,but ntfs on all other drives is from store n been only format i used since i started w this desktop 5months back now... So what is actually best(i only use all drives in 1 n same desktop i dont use them on any other pc) Thanks
Expat is a good option to allow you to access across platforms and my first go to. However if you ever want to encrypt the data then NTFS is the best option for that 😊
What is your go-to disk format? Have you ever had any disk disasters? (don't worry I have too!) 😁
Concise and useful. Thanks.
Happy to help 😁
Thanks fot the video! Helped me a lot! 💪👊

I am glad you found it useful! 😁

Isnt Exfat's trade off that is more susceptible to corruption though?
@@Leisosa After a little research, ExFAT is the best for external SSD storage. Linux, windows and mac can read exFAT.
