There's a reason Frollo doesn't show up a lot. He's not goofy or funny in any way most Disney villains are, or "cool" in the likes of Maleficent. He's realistic, and on a deep instinctual level, the kind of villain that leaves us all feeling slimy being close to. There is nothing redeeming in him at all.

I believe that was the point; Frollo is a darker villain because he is not evil for the sake and fun of being a villain, but in a twisted way, believes himself to be a good man because to him, every evil thing he does is in the name of God. He has brainwashed himself.

Hunchback of Notre Dame was rated G and yet it is considered to be the darkest Disney movie of all time. It had religion, genocide, murder, oppression, torture, lust & sin. All of that material were in the movie because of the villain Judge Claude Frollo. He was a religious man, committed genocide & oppressed the gypsies, he murdered Quasimodo's mother, he tortured the citizens of Paris and Esmeralda by burning them alive & lusted after Esmeralda by groping her and threatening her. The worst thing of all about Frollo was that he believed that all the stuff he did was in the name of GOD.

I think this is one of the key parts that set the movie apart from other classics. In every Disney movie the MC gets to live with the person they fell in love with. But in this movie it's more realistic. Life isn't so simple. Just because someone is kind to you doesn't mean they have or will develop romantic feelings for you. Esmeralda was one of the first people to ever show kindness to Quasimodo (the other being the knight). So, it's normal for him to fall for her. But he realized that his two friends, Esmeralda and the knight, love each other and are happy together. So he made the mature choice and kept his relationship with Esmeralda at a friend's level.
Watching this as a child shocked me coz I was sure he'll get the girl. But the end result shook me. After I was older, I realized how mature it is and what a masterpiece this story is. It's sad that kids nowadays probably won't get another movie like "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" from Disney anymore. Disney just doesn't have the balls anymore. They have been castrated.🤣

As a Christian myself, i find this movie to be realistic and one of the darkest and deepest of Disney movies. Showing that Christianity itself has been abused by humans, and the dangers of abuse through Quasimodo.
Throughout history, MANY have used Christianity to further their own goals, false prejudices, and much more corruption.
This is like the story of the tax collector (Quasimodo) and pharisee (Frollo).
The clergy within the Cathedral are ones who actually show what Christians should be, a stark difference than Frollo.
The key is love. The main commandment Jesus gave us before he left.

My Church has reached out and has a homeless ministry, someone reaches out to my Church for help, boom they are helped. Someone needs a place to stay or a new car or couch, my Church provides. I know of another Church who helps homeless drug addicts to 1) get off drugs, 2) have a place to stay, 3) get a job and become productive members of society again.

The main difference between the film and book is that in the film, Frollo is not an ordained member of the French clergy, but a self-righteous and pious judge and the French Minister of Justice. His interactions with the Archdeacon show the difference between those who claim to be men of God and those who actually are Men of the Cloth. And I am not Catholic.
The Romani are also a majority Catholic people.
God Help the Outcasts to me seems like a good example of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. The other churchgoers are biblically accurate, but only those who humble themselves before God will be exalted.
During Hellfire, when the guard comes in with news that Esmerelda escaped Notre Dame, it is symbolic of God offering one last chance for Frollo to turn back. The heavenly light from the door contrasting the darkness and the fireplace. But Frollo turns towards the fire, towards his downfall. Free to stand, though capable to fall - Paradise Lost

Very rarely do I see videos where people who don't tend to focus on religion tend to actually cover the differences between faith and religion, so good on you there. As a Christian, I can tell you that even inside the Church, this differentiation is not often made. Even some pastors I have seen only come close by using this difference to try and justice why Christianity is right and all other "religions" are wrong, a notion I am not particularly fond of as I believe that kind of thinking in the church can and has lead us into trouble before.
I also like how you point out who is actually a member of the church and the behaviors differ. Touching on the differences between Frollo and the Archdeacon, even as both are portrayed to be members of the church, is also a point that a lot of RUclips movie analysts miss, preferring instead to take the "easy" route of using Frollo to just say that the church is evil, and everyone outside of it, as symbolized by the gypsies and town people, are good. We of the church are just as human as everyone else and are therefore, unfortunately, subject to the same whims of fancy that sway everyone else.
So I guess this is all a long way of saying "Thanks for not being lazy with the analysis."

For me, Quasi not ending up with Esmeralda wasn't sending a bad message, he knew what would make her happiest. Pheobus even stepped back near the end, remaining quiet to give Quasi a chance to embrace Esmeralda, and even stayed back until Quasi took his hand to reunite the two officially. Quasi wasn't abandoned by Esmeralda, or looked over for the handsome Prince. One of my favorite parts of this movie is the Latin in the background.
In Hellfire the monks say a line in between Frollo’s and when you combine these lines they roughly translate to “Father I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed.” It’s almost as if the lines act to challenge Frollo’s claims. The “saints” of Notre Dame know of Frollo’s hypocrisy. He claims he is a virtuous man, yet he has sinful thoughts and is cruel. It’s not Esmeralda’s fault Frollo lusts after her. The only one to blame is Frollo for his thoughts.
Then he is faced by the hooded figures who chant “mea culpa” (my fault) and “mea maxima culpa” (I have failed).
At the end, they chant “Kyrie Eleison” which means “God have mercy.” The saints knows Frollo is going to take his frustration out on Paris. It eludes back to the opening scene with Frollo and the archdeacon. “You never can run from nor hide what you’ve done from the eyes of Notre Dame.” And then- “the saints regarded Frollo from their stone facade. And he felt their gaze as if it were the eyes of God.”
There is a Broadway version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. They did make it more like the book, but kept most of the songs. They also added a song right after Hellfire called “Esmeralda” and it follows Frollo while he sets Paris ablaze.

I love the juxtaposition of Quasimodo and Frollo in terms of their masculinity shown in being romantically rejected. Of course Quasi is upset and hurt, but he DOESN'T act in a toxic manner, as opposed to Frollo who...well *gestures as the city in flames*

The thing about the message of being kind to people despite them not giving him what he wants is in itself possibly problematic, because someone who is inherently good and willing to be kind no matter what kinda sets one up to be basically used like a doormat. And that is extremely damaging to one's self-worth and mental health over time. If that's the takeaway and what ends up happening in the film, it's likely that Quasimodo will descend further into depression and despair.

I would love to see you guys make a video over the musical version!
A brief synopsis: Do not read to the end if you would like to avoid the major spoilers.
    It is significantly darker.
The people treat Quasimodo as the monster he appears to be.
Frollo is actually the arch-deacon, so it makes the religious tones even darker.
Quasimodo is actually the son of Frollo's estranged brother who slept with a Gypsy and eventually died from illness, hence Frollo's hatred of Gypsy culture and people.
Esmeralda actually dies from being burned at the stake.
Quasimodo then throws Frollo from the top of Notre Dame. (People always laughed at this when we performed it a few years back...)
If you ever get the chance to see this live, it truly is worth it. It has even more great music, and the story is much more harrowing.

Also I love it that the gargoyle took Frollo down to the hellfire below. Gargoyles are protectors of churches. That gargoyle did his job well to ward off evil. 😎

Great video. As a former conservative christian, and only recently mellowed out Atheist, this was a good reminder to treat and judge people as individuals before looking at to the group they subscribe to. I think mankind is generally pretty bad to each other until they are given reasons to be good. Religion can either become this reason, or make the problem worse. I think it is always the wrong reason, however, as faith is definitionally not based on provable fact, but non-the-less, it is still capable of moving the individuals heart and driving the masses to mercy or madness. Paris balanced on a knives edge and could have fallen either way. Better to go without such a volatile believe system.

religion built the cathedral, religion provided sanctuary for long enough that the people were able to take it upon themselves and defend their lives from an evil tyrant who worked its way into their society, and in the end provided a place for a last stand where they could make a defense and win out over evil. There is no reason to believe Frollo would have been a good man if he had just been an atheist, he chose his fate when he sung hellfire and turned away from the literal light of God and appealed to the fire to grant his wishes. To me the movie is about having free will and how the choices you make influence the path you take through life, the cards dealt to you may be your starting point and no 2 people are equal, but the choices you make thereafter have a greater bearing on your destination. Frollo is one of the most powerful men in the city and he is toppled by 3 of the politically weakest people, but 3 people with the strongest spirits/souls in the whole movie. The movie has many scenarios where a character is placed in a predicament and has to make a choice between good and evil, doing the right thing is costly but in the long run those who chose the path of good prevailed. Esmeralda defied Frollo's orders and freed Quasimodo, causing Frollo's guards to attack her. The good soldier saves the family in the burning house, sentencing himself to a hanging for his act of treason against Frollo's authority, and Frollo appeals to his base nature and turns his back to God and spirituality, and in doing so he lives by the sword and then dies by it.

People can be kind but they can also be dangerous. Humans are on the top of the food chain in many ecosystems after all and got there by act opportunistically. Modern society just sprang up much faster than humans can evolve so many people still have the instinct to do things that benefit themselves but do harm to others if they have a chance even if these people are not inherently bad.

As a religious person myself, I feel it worth noting that the "Christianity" displayed most often in this movie, by the churchgoers and Frollo primarily, are not only hypocrisy but in direct contradiction to what the Bible actually teaches. The Archdeacon is much closer to following the truth of what Christianity is about. That said, it is absolutely true that the movie wishes to protray religion as primarily a tool of the wicked and still impotent even when the person's heart follows it properly. However, I personally still find this movie to be my Number 1 favorite Disney movie.
Why, you ask, would a Christian person love a movie that vilified his religion? Well, besides the frankly stunning musical numbers and breathtaking scale of the cinematography, I find this movie to shine a light on all of the objections that non religious people would have and therefore it can be used as a very effective means of rebuttal and teaching others how NOT to behave towards your fellow man. Also, I think it's worth mentioning, that Frollo is essentially an image of Satan, who believed himself superior to all others, who twists the Word to his own evil ends, and who ultimately rejects all that God stands for, and is thereby thrown down into the flames of Hell for his transgressions. It's also worth noting that God primarily uses the hearts of his true followers to exact his will, rather than grand shows of power,, though he is certainly capable of such(Hence the gargoyle coming to life to damn Frollo.) Looking at it that way, perhaps the ministers of the Church of Notre Dame remained impotent, but God's will is done nonetheless. The lesson I learn and would teach others is that God knows the hearts of men, He knows who truly follows Him and who does not and He will not abide blasphemy such as Frollo's to go unpunished. Despite all his machinations, all his power, those who are full of the deadliest of sins, Pride, shall never triumph against those who love their neighbors as themselves and follow the true teachings of God.

I called every church in the area and not one would help. I evidently have to be a member of their church and/or be within 10 minutes drive. This isn't the fault of the people who go to that church, just those in charge of it.
I was able to find someone who did come by and change out the lightbulbs and batteries. Turns out, he wasn't a member of that church. He cuts their grass and was waiting for a check when I called. I tried to pay him for his time and he refused. He is a more Godly man than the leader of that church will ever be. I appreciate the distinction between faith and religion in the video, but I think a point worth making is that the two are necessary to balance each other out, one is not necessarily superior to the other.
Faith without any sort of religious or organizational belief to it is essentially just a fealy good feeling that feels good, and therefore somewhat useless, or worse yet it is a form of idolatry, religion on the other hand without legitimate faith at its center, can simply be used as a means of control or manipulation, for one man to put himself above his fellows.
Claude Frolo was not a faithful or religious man, because despite his insistence otherwise rather than looking at his actions and the actions of those around him through the lens of religious teaching, he looked at everything including religious teaching through the lens of what he himself desired.

no Disney tale is like its source material. they took all the bad stories and give them happy endings. Even pop culture makes fun of it in almost every media that covers that topic.

Great video Ben. I wonder how that scene with Frollo searching for Esmerelda compares to the opening scene of Inglorious Bastards.
Also this is unrelated but are you thinking about doing a breakdown of the Expanse season 5 trailer at all? I watched it at 0.25 speed and there are some juicy bits that are revealed that aren't necessarily focused on by the trailer itself.

We know GF uploads are often quite tongue in cheek affairs (Why X is evil one week and the victim next week), with both opinions delivered with earnest and dodgy slight of hand facts from our hosts. It's what we demand, it's great fun.
But this was just an honest, no smirking break down of the tale. Really enjoyable stuff.

In a vacuum a positive messaging around Esmeralda not choosing the MC could be argued. The one movie where the MCs counterpart does not choose the MC. The only issue is we do not live in a vacuum and Quasimodo is disabled. Which means the messaging isn't that but that the one movie the MC is not romanced is the only one where they are actually disabled. Which in the US if you don't know a disabled person's support from the government is dropped as soon as they get married. Which means many cannot get married at all because of the loss of support. Which when you look at this movie through this light means that the messaging is that as a disabled person you will not get love, the best you can hope for is to be tolerated by society. It's not good messaging. The only way the former messaging can be applied is if the character is in fact able bodied, straight and white. Otherwise it's punching down.

Its literally them or death that's the only reason. The Imperium would be hardline villains in any universe that's not 40k.

Listen do people not get that Frollo is not a good religious person? No Roman Catholic is like "yeah go kill that baby" he's acting outside the faith beyond it's gaze, the archdeacon and Quasimodo are the truely religious people. It's not about faith it's about a lack of faith in him. He is not working by what the church says, or doing evil actions in the name of God he's "taking the name of the Lord thy God in Vain" a serious sin. The twist of trying to say that Frollo is somehow following religion while falling into the seven deadly sins is unbearable to watch, as a Catholic myself I can say all the sins he falls into, how he would be condemned, and his constant blasphemies. Someone can be "part" of something and not following it well, or be rejecting it and therefore not a good representation of the teachings. For instance he has no mercy that's completely unchristian.
Also the mother's death outside the church isn't even from the original story and if they saved her there'd be no story.
This just so misses the point of this story I can't even finish.

I think personally a big message here is the importance of actual faith and piety over being religious. Frolo is very religious. He believes in God, he believes in virtue and he believes in his own moral superiority (he says it himself he is PROUD of his virtue, pride has NEVER been a Christian virtue). Then Quasimodo. Quasimodo has actual faith and piety. He isn't obsessed with his moral superiority he's humble. Sure he's been taught that he's worthless but he's quiet, unassuming and simply kind because to him its natural. The absolutely brilliant dual songs of Heavens Light and Hell Fire put it perfectly. Quasi's all about her beauty and coming closer to God in appreciating it, where Frolo is about how she is tempting him and he is to weak to resist (he asks why God made the devil so much stronger then men but theologically the Devil's power to tempt isn't greater then an actually pious man's ability to resist he's shoving his responsbilities on another0. Yes the villain is a man of religion but the hero is a man of faith.
