I was at this AFL grand final heavily pregnant with my daughter. What a voice , I’ll never forget John’s performance as I had goose pumps throughout 🙌🏼
Thanks guys 😊 And thanks, Debb, for another wonderful suggestion ❤❤ A beautiful rendition of one of our unofficial national anthems by Farnsey and his backing vocalists 😊 The art is coming along so nicely. Love what you have so far Fellipe. Can't wait to see the final product 👍 😊❤❤
"I am Australian" by The Seekers at their final performance is often called Australia's unofficial national anthem.... it tells the story of Australia from First Nations people until now.
It means the world to Australians. John almost had me in tears but then watching the respect that you guys showed, took me all the way there. Thank you!
The VFL or Victorian Football League later became the AFL as teams from other states joined in. There are 18 teams in all with a 19th to join in 2026/7.
Most foreigners need an interpretation for this song. Waltzing Matilda is a person who roves around with a swag or bagroll. The song is about a rover who is camping next to a watering hole. A sheep comes down to the river and he grabs it. The owner catches him and three policemen come to arrest him. Rather than be caught, he jumps into the watering hole and drowns.
Hi Sibertiger. I don't know if you listen to the talking at the beginning of my requests - Paul always reads my text because I always give an intro and/or explanation before each song. Cheers Debb 😂🎉

This is an Australian Folk song....which relates back to an old 'bushie' who steals a sheep and is sitting by a creek when up came 3 troopers (police) and wanted to take him in....but he chose to jump in the creek and he drowned....so now his ghost can be heard as you pass by the creek (billabong)
The pre game entertainment to the 1989 Grand Final........one of the TOUGHEST games of football i have ever seen , and clearly the best Grand Final. Brereton played the whole game with brocken ribs and a split kidney.....almost 2 1/2 hours. Dipierdomenico played the whole second half, about 90 minutes , with broken ribs and a collapsed lung. 6 or 7 players from both teams went straight to hospital after the game......about 13 in total stayed overnight or longer.
Here is John singing Advance Australia Fair at the VFL grand Final in 1979, - ruclips.net/video/s9hYrYlZ1eU/видео.html ( it was NOT as yet our National Anthem - it was still God save the Queen until 1984)
Deb was partly right. The bag he carries is called a swag which is why he's called a Swagman. His bedroll was referred to as Matilda as that is what/who he lay down with at night. The lidded can that was part of his swag was called a Billy Can. He made Tea in it and used it as a dutch oven.
You ve got John in his Diy as a Bone, im sure that's not the right spelling but it is a great Ozzie product that cattle men swear by. A allweather/rain coat that is as good as it gets, notice the split in the back to make it hang down smoothly each side of the horse.
Yes 30 year old John has performed the Australian national Anthum. 1979 at the VFL Football Grand final. One of Dr Kap's remastered video m.ruclips.net/video/vrWueCe-zxs/видео.html
My understanding is that Matilda was the bedroll that the swaggy carried. Many men took to the road in a depression in the late 19th century, i also thought that the sheep was paid for in that stage of history if the skin with wool was left for the squatter (land owner ) to fine, the sheep being so numerous as to be almost worthless as an individual animal.
Matilda was a bedroll which usually consisted of one thin dark wool blanket although sometimes it included a canvas groundsheet that could also be used as a partially waterproof cover either beneath the blanket to help prevent the damp from rising from the moist ground or overhead to help prevent the rain from above. During the 1880's as well as in previous and later years many of the squatters and sheep framers became wealthy men because of the high prices paid for fine greasy wool at Australian action as Britain seemed to have an insatiable appetite for fine wool to feed their woolen factories and industries. A dead sheep's fleece is for practicably worthless as a saleable item, and sheep in their prime producing years were worth a relatively high value, so the squatter would almost certainly want the police to arrest anyone caught stealing his valuable livestock even if it was only for the itinerant swagmen to sustain his own life.
It's a swag, not a bag. A billy is an enamelled pot or can that can be hung over a fire. A jumbuck is a sheep. A billabong is an ox bow lake or cut off meander. Tucker is food.

No, it is The Seekers singing We Are Australian. Or I still call Australia Home by Peter Allen. They are the most popular wants for our Anthem.
Very talented! That looks fantastic.

I think the stadium only held 80,000 people then. Was extended to 100,000
Waltzing Matilda,
I Still Call Australia Home,
You’re The Voice,
I Am, You Are, We Are Australian.
My Island Home
We (Australians) have so many second anthems. Probably because our National anthem is not as good as other we could now choose...
Another unofficial Aussie anthem "I Still Call Australia Home" Peter Allen.
No , it's definitely the Seekers I am Australian.
Down Under by Men at Work
No it would be “we are Australian” by the Seekers would be the other official national anthem
