Makes you wonder why Synology claims 6GB as their "official" limit for NAS units like the DS218+, when even the Intel spec sheet for that processor lists 8GB as its max. configuration. (Any why make swapping out the internal RAM module so dang difficult?)
Great video! Thanks for the link to the RAM you used in the video. I had head about this but was weary about trying it due to inconsistent reports. Time to activate 16GB!
Thanks for the positive feedback.. Yeah, initially i was worried that it would be "detected" and cause intermittent problems down the road... Using the untitily to push the RAM to the limit while verifying the contents of the RAM upon completion made me feel much better about taking the jump! Also, i've been running 16GB for over a month now (under HEAVY RAM loads with VMS) and ive had 0.0 issues!
I would like to see a test to show if there's a benefit to running dual channel mode. I put an 8gb module in mine taking it to 10gb, if there is a benefit to being in dual-channel mode I'll move mine up to 16gb since it gets pretty heavy use as a Plex server.
I've just bought 2x 4gb Crucial DDR3L-1866 (CT51264BF186BJ) for my 718+ and I have the blinking blue light on power button. I have tried installing just 1 with the original 2gb RAM and does not work. Anyone knows what can I do?
Hi There! Your video was really helpful! I was just curious: If you run a memory test via Synology Assistant (with the 16 GBs of Ram installed), does it pass or fail the test?
Hi, I bought those modules of Crucial CT2K102464BF186D (8x2 = 16Gb) but the NAS DS718 + does not detect them. Flashing blue light always and does not start the system. Any solution? Thank you
@@ModsAndProjects Yes, exactly the same CT2K102464BF186D modules, the NAS is new, bought 1 week ago and the modules supposedly also new. I can't test them on another device.
@@TheSatanasito Very strange, where did you get the CT2K102464BF186D modules? NAS is new, so that leaves: re-seat the rams, swap the ram into opposite slots, test one stick at a time in both slots. Report back. I suspect one stick is bad or one slot is bad, or bootleg RAM if from bad source.
Hi everyone, looking at buying a Synology DS218+ (my first NAS). Can you some benefits with upgrading the RAM? or does it just speed up running/playback times? Thanks
Thanks for the video, very interesting. I just bought a new DS718+ and installed Synology 4GB - so I have 6GB. What are the advantages of having 16GB? I am running Synology Surveillance Station (two cameras at the moment but will move up to six) and also running Windows 10 on Synology VM and it all seems to run OK. Will the extra RAM give me better performance? I expect it will but... just asking. Thanks.
I have used 2x HMT41GS6AFR8A-PB - SK Hynix 8GB DDR3-1600 SODIMM PC3L-12800S Dual Rank x8 Module and everything works perfect. it seems that DSM can use the extra RAM for as cache for the files. RAM cache is much faster than SSD cache. I wonder if there is a way to configure the using of RAM cache. It would be great if I can store in cache a local hosted website from my DS218+ Another approach could be if I can define a RAM-disk for my website and keep it there.

It worked for me DS718+ : 2GB (original) + 8GB (crucial). Thank you.
We love questions and feedback! Please post below!
Just ordered brand new DS718+ NAS and RAM kit to replace my DS214Play which just doesnt cut it anymore. I'll post here if everything works out.

Can you provide a link to the source or binary of the memory pressure test? - I seem to be unable to google it from what I see in the video - Thx!

How can Intel's ARK site be wrong for this CPU? That's very strange.

Great question, I will run the test tomorrow
I was excited so i ran the test tonight -- nas01 findhostd: util_fhost.c:1351 Memtest passed!
Using the modules listed in the description.

You bought the exact modules in the link? If so... Bad ram, ram not seated right, bad ram slot, dust in ram slot?

Excuseme : ¡ Oh no !, los modulos que me han mandado son CT102464BF186D ¡¡¡ No CT2K102464BF186D !! That will be the problem, right?

@@ModsAndProjects I think 2K is because it is a kit of 2 modules, I have tried in all the ways you comment and nothing. I will have to return them.

Only this model can be achieved?
