For 26 years, motoring enthusiasts in East Africa have
hosted one of the classic events in the motor sporting
calendar - the Safari Rally. In 1978, they really got
their money's worth! It was the roughest, toughest safari
they can remember. Of 68 starters, only 15 crews survived
after floodwaters washed away vital tracks, and shortcuts
were lost in a sea of mud. But there was a fairy-tale finish
- the winner being Jean-Pierre Nicolas, the French outsider
who had already pulled off a brilliant victory in the Monte
Carlo Rally.

I was 13 years then and I'm now 53...life was so so smooth then. Everything was sparkling with events like the rally brightened then Easter holidays...
We took part as Car No.70 unseeded duo in our 7 year old peugeot 504..1st Leg to the Western circuit went well and our 11nd Leg to the Coast..soon after Kilifi Tezo the radiator got a hole and we used mud to make up lip up to Mariakani .Our mechanics changed the radiator .We drove with problem all the way to Kitui and our service crew helped us with water as the cylinder head was already burnt out-Our 3rd Leg took us only to Nyeri but we had lost much time at Highridge changing the gasket and so we got time-barred only 300 kms to the finish.
Peter Mukundi I remember you sir. Though I was a young boy, the team of Mûkundi and Mûkundi was always in our safari conversations. I'm really envious of your great adventures.

Great memories of Safari Rally
Was in Mombasa during my 7 years stay......would follow the cars to watch them...thrilling, so much fun......
Brings back a lot of great memories watching the toughest and greatest rally of them all , bert shankland , joghinder singh , herman the german to name but a few , Im looking for old school friends from 69 to 79 who lived in dar es salaam and went to the international school and st michael's in soni , great vid btw
I remember you when you checked in Mazeras checkpoint at night. I recall how the co-driver came out jovial and smiling at us. We were kids. Good job sir.
Fantastic video of a fantastic edition of the Safari.
In my office I had a huge poster of one of the 504 v6 coupes driving up a river in this event.
We were Peugeot dealers in sydney.

My childhood highlight was the 4 days around Easter when the rally was held..s.tayed up late or woke up early to watch the cars and keep track of the race via radio ..every one had a fav driver, mine were Joginder and Waldegaard ...nostalgia

Nostalgic sport. Just listen to that rumbling noise, check the wild country, and look at the enthusiastic crowds. The country would be on total lock-down as everyone heads to the vantage sports. My favorite was a river crossing on Chinga river.
I used to follow the rally on the radio and would write down the points lost at each check-point. Then it was out with my friends with our toy cars with our own river, mud and gutter crossings, 5 points lost for every roll-over.

I travelled from north to south across Kenya in 2012. The roads are exactly the same as this video.

Kenya has changed BRO. You can drive from Nairobi all the way to the border of ethiopia on smooth tarmac road, Nairobi to Sudan smooth tarmac road
In the game parks may be? Even then not exactly like in the video.
