    I still remember my older cousins waking up at 4AM to wait for the cars; we all had the newspaper pullout with driver names, route, and times. This was more than just a rally it was a national experience. My favorite drivers were Joginder Singh and Bjorn Waldegaard

      Were you from South Africa? I cant imagine the feeling of earing the cars just coming, then seconds after seeing them in all their mighty power and speed coming at you.

    at the very beginning of the video it is our car Datsun 1600sss with ante TZ 12706 car number 32. also shown at 0.52 seconds of the video.We finished 11th overall. only 18 cars finished.

      If you're referring to full cages. But they still have half cages here.

    These drivers are absolute lunatics incredible drivers A quote from ( evenflow ). My favorite is the 240Z cars , but the escorts seem more suited for this type of racing.

      Yes, when Australia had a big manufacturing industry, developed after WW2 so as to be self reliant, And a corresponding export market of such products. Sadly destroyed after the 1960's by successive "progressive woke" governments.@@shulestuff

      They were not compulsory yet. Also the heat was unbearable in Africa.
