The reporters also need to pay close attention to what the other ones say to play off of them, else there's not enough material to deduce anything. "Ranger" "picnic basket" "rug" (any other hints I missed) is a fair shake.
"do you in the woods" was a big one once you hear that, you know it's about bears (plus the previously mentioned Ranger reference and picnic basket narrow it down to Yogi Bear) and what are you going to do about the rug + tired of sharing the basket gives away that yogi did something to another bear aka Boo Boo

You never ever say the action or proper name in the hints out loud. And besides, you have to act like Colin knows exactly who he is, so it's honestly just a really stupid question too.

@Steve Smith All of the references that you mention relate only to who he was, which @duy says he got. The clues to what he did (which @duy didn't get) were the ones about remorse, and what would he do with the rug.
