    I love the ten-foot pole statement. I'm a firefighter and that's the same thing we do when we go into a room or onto a roof and a building that's on fire so we don't go through any holes

    Just realized, if you have a lair of an exadventurer, having a 10ft pole trap because they expect someone to try to find traps with it. You press the plate and it triggers the trap 10 ft back.

    Rogues are great. Always play them.
    One time, my DM has us fight an adult black dragon. Entire party was low health, I was at 3 health. My turn. I rolled to use my magic dagger (basically a long sword with its damage, bought it from a very stupid merchant). Rolled a 20, then rolled max damage. Everyone looked at me.
    Dm then said that, with my limp and bloody body, I rushed the beast and jumped onto its head. As it writhed, I held on before jamming my dagger through its eye and into its brain. As it fell, I took enough damage to fall unconscious.
    I was a thief, not an assassin. A level 5 thief. In my group, I am now the dragonslayer.

      ok, these are the possibilities:
      1) The Dragon was not an Adult Black Dragon
      2) He was seriously injured
      3) The DM made a lot of mistakes using the Dragon
      4) The DM lied because he didn't want to TPK
      5) You are lying... There is no way you killed an Adult Black Dragon, UNLESS, the rest of the party was lvl10+ except you for some reason and they did the most of the dmg and you finished it... 2d10 + dex mod when Adult black dragons have 200 HP... I love rogues but what you are saying here is ridiculous

    Stealth at our table is run as a contest of Stealth vs Perception. Highest wins. The Rogue needs plausible means of Stealth. They don't just vanish. Lightfoot Halflings and Wood Elves have racial abilities that offer unique circumstances, but otherwise there hs to be some contributing factor. We also do moving with Stealth as 1/2 movement.
    All that established, I LOOOVE Rogues. I have sadly yet to play one because there's always been a new player at our table that wants to try one, and I'd rather not step on the toes of a new player. I'm a huge fan of the Arcane Trickster, and I've ALWAYS recommended that Find Familiar trick, Jim. It's almost a rule. Note the strength score of any flying familiars you have if you're a Gnome or Halfling. It might be a cheap way to get to higher book shelves or reach that measuring cup ;)
    I'm looking forward to playing a Goblin Arcane Trickster next campaign. Add spells to an array of clay jars he'll fill with all manner of things, like flour (not just for invisibility - it's also a dust explosive), broken glass (great for knowing when someone's approaching around a corner - it crunches under foot), cat urine (great for watch dogs), and the like. There's a reason my DM will not allow me around Green Slime. He knows I'll collect it and jar it for a missile weapon. Don't forget common things like soot for darkening shiny weapons or armor, string for any number of tripwires and traps, and using crawling insects like ants to find cracks in walls. Pouring water over floors is also good to find trap doors.
    If you happen to kill any larger mushrooms like shriekers, carve off chunks and plant them where you want guards for cheap. Fungi easily reproduce. Take advantage.
    Yes, I'm one of those Rogue bastards.
    And Pruit...my DM will forever curse you. I'm, fittingly, STEALING your "knick that ring" trick. Perfect. Appreciative applause on that one.

      Yeah, it's pretty easy to get Stealth scores up to the point where there's no way a standard monster could beat your score with Perception. I see it more as a failing of the monster design than anything else.

    About stealth and speeds, I use it like this:
    In travel, you can go in about 300 feet /min, in normal pace.
    If a turn is about 6 sec, and you can move at 30 feet in normal pace, it all makes sense.
    So, at slow pace you ll'have to move in about 2/3 of your speed, so a character with speed 30, will have to move 20 feet to go in stealth mode.

    I usually have at least one rogue in the parties I DM, and I always give them oppertunity to use stealth.
    Funny enough, in one instance, my player rolled for stealth in a blank corridor and I told him that a he heard a guard approaching from the corner up front. Now, he could run forward and try take the guard by surprise when he turned corner, or backpedal to the corner he came from. Nope, he just stood there saying "Don't worry, I rolled a 21 on my stealth."
    Naturally, the guard turns the corner and sees the player, surprised but alarmed.
    I say "The guard looks alarmed and heads--"
    Player: "But I was in stealth, I rolled a 21, he shouldn't see me."
    "You're in a blank corridor, there's nowhere you can hide."
    How would you guys handle such an encounter, do you require your players to actually hide if they can't turn invisible?

    • @chaddixon9764
      @chaddixon9764 7 лет назад +29

      Benjamin Bjärnhag I would have handled it the exact same way. I have no idea where some players get the idea that stealth = invisibility. If you have nowhere to hide then you could roll 45, doesn't matter.

    • @RoboBoddicker
      @RoboBoddicker 7 лет назад +18

      Right on the Hide listing in the PHB: "You can’t hide from a creature that can see you." 5e definitely leaves more up to the DM in terms of what constitutes "hideable terrain", but if you're just standing in the middle of a hallway, you don't get to hide per the RAW.

    • @realmofdoors9605
      @realmofdoors9605 6 лет назад +4

      I mean, if they're just freakin standing there, they'll get caught. That's common sense. But in the off chance that they're a small race/character, they could crouch and move around to get behind the NPCs to avoid being caught

    • @orangefool1527
      @orangefool1527 6 лет назад +4

      If I were the rouge I'd wait around the corner, low to the ground and try to slip past the guard. Any one who thinks they could stand a hallway and still be hidden because they rolled high, even when you gave them choices, is an idiot.

  • @ZetHololo
    @ZetHololo 7 лет назад +10

    Hey guys, i recently listened to a podcast with Jeremy Crawford where he revealed that the vague rules for stealth were in fact intentional. He said that they had a really intriquite and full set of rules for stealth, but they have found that it doesn't work with 5e. He said that their main design philosophy for 5e was to make play as simple and understandable as possible and they have found out that full rules for stealth just bogged down play without bringing anything for play. So they decided to instead of making a lot of rules, leave stealth rules for the dm, to make play more situational and personal.

    I'm a little upset about the lack of Swashbuckler mention. The swashbuckler makes a fantastic "face" for a group, while depending on knowledge of Attacks of Opportunity, and ultimately getting sneak attack when essentially in a duel.

    I was playing an Arcane Trickster as well. We are running the "Prince of Apocalypse" module, and I am playing an Air Genasi/Arcane Trickster/Sailor. The Air Genasi's ability to hold its breath almost indefinitely, and the levitate ability at character creation, is pretty good. Also Hold Person makes Sneak Attack really powerful, the Paralyzed status gives Advantage and instant Critical hits with melee weapons, doubling all that Sneak Dice and Weapon dice. The higher levels with Invisibility gives the Enemy Disadvantage on Saving throws, so being Invisible then, casting a spell like Hold Person makes it a powerful combo.
    Also Mage Hand Legerdemain is a great way to open doors in dungeons. Even if I fail to find the trap on the door, I can often be 30 feet away from that swinging ax trap. Yeah, I'm paranoid.

    I think there's one more thing you could've mentioned about the rogue. With the exception of Arcane Trickster, resource management is almost nonexistent. If a rogue has health, they're good to go, with their full strength.

    Around the 20-minute mark you talk about armor wearers wanting to move at full speed because Disadvantage doesn't stack and say, "Of course they'd want to do it fast..."
    My take on this that notion is this... if you've ever tried to open a creaky door slowly, you know it's a bad idea... you open the creaky door fast because it actually makes less noise (even though it still makes noise) than if you open it slowly.
    Enjoying the shows, thank you guys.

Any help at all would be appreciated!

    The player’s handbook says that movement for a player (assuming standard 30ft movement speed) is 300ft per minute. So, in 60 seconds, which is ten rounds, they move 30 feet, ten times, equalling 300ft per minute.
    For a “slow” pace, enabling stealth, it says 200ft per minute, suggesting it’s 2/3, rather than half.
    Fast movement is 400ft per minute.
    Following the same equation, we come to 40ft per round of fast movement, and 20ft of stealthy movement.

He sure loved to impress and show off, and he left his comfortable lifestyle as part of a travelling entertainment troupe when his curiosity was peaked with a scabbard with no blade in it. But, his curiosity also got him killed, for when he saw a silver strand in the Underdark, he touched it, rose oh so high, and then plummeted so far down, breaking his spine, and making him defenseless against the cave fisher's hungry jaws. A tragic end for a tremendous character. (Side note: Him falling was caused by the actions of a teammate, who then killed another one of my characters in the next campaign with a lightning bolt)

    Thank you.
    love the work y'all are doing.
    I started in the old AD&D days, so when I started to DM for my son and his friends they all looked at equipment and everyone looked at me crazy when I ask if they had a 10ft pole and a bag of dead rats.
    After they survived the first little dungeon they went to town and bought everyone a sack, and a 10 ft pole.
    😀
    I had to explain when I was taught this game everything wants to kill you.

  • @roamingthereal4060

    I think the stealth rules in the game are mostly pretty clear. It's all based around the hide action. You cannot hide from someone who can see you. When you hide, you roll stealth, and then are treated as an unseen attacker for everyone who's passive you beat. If someone wants to search for you as an action, they may roll a perception check. If you attack or move into line of sight you are no longer hidden. If they havent taken a round in combat yet, you get a surprise round.
    I think you can build on that if you want to, but this gives a pretty quick and dirty system which can be tweaked with advantage and disadvantage to suit the situation.

    My wife plays a mastermind rogue and it's very much an RP build. However, she was able to talk an Ettin into destroying a band of Orogs for her and gained a temporary ally. She is now multiclassing with a Warlock to help her with combative skills and keeping her at a range to use the Help bonus action for our other rogue:swashbuckler who walks through people and he's only level 4

  • @Mr.Monacle
    @Mr.Monacle 6 лет назад

    We intentionally used the super vague rules for stealth in our game because we thought it would be funny to have a rogue that can just use the hide action in front of the enemy and have them react like a guard in friggin metal gear solid. "Must have been the wind that just slit my friends throat". However we use the hitting yourself critically in our game for if you roll a nat 1. So the one rogue we had managed to roll a nat 1 with a rapier and killed himself by rolling max damage on the sneak attack damage. We were level 6 at the time.

    Aww man, no mention of the Swashbuckler? They're one of my favorite Rogue archetypes.
    Instead of being the usual sneaky, backstabbing type, swashbucklers are a lot more like a duelist or fencer. They feel like a more dextrous melee combatant than a dex Fighter usually does, in my opinion.

    Since the Healer's Kit can be used with Fast Hands, a Thief with the Healer feat can run around stabilising his teammates back up to one hit point as a bonus action. Add the Mobile feat and they can move in, stabilise a teammate, attack their opponent, and move back out.
    This can be somewhat aggravating to a DM.

So DM would roll if he had wife and kids in a city or town and if they liked me. So sometime the family would give me cover and sometimes id have an angry wife tell if the town guard where I was hiding. My favorite character ever.

    My idea for a Rogue/Thief is a combat medic with the Healer feat, using the Healer's Kit as a bonus action. Using 2 charges (action and bonus action) you can stabilize a fallen creature, giving them 1 hit point, and then giving them 1d6 + 4 + max number of hit dice (min 7, max 31).

    Rogue assassin is crazy damage. Start with fighter so you have saving throws in con instead of dex and multi class into rogue until you have fighter2rogue3 because fighter 2 gets you action surge which lets you attack 4 times. That's not counting sneak attack bonus. After that level your Fighter to 5 for the extra attack and then rogue to 7 for increase sneak attack bonus and evasion and consider multi classing into Paladin. Damage, Damage, and more damage.

    Doing a stealth role for the party works quite well, then depending on how bag the fail is depends on consequences - if ONE person fails (with modifiers), a guard could be alerted but not suspcious, if ALL the party fails, then the castle is alrted.
    It also mitigates that if EVERYONE in the party has to role, you're much more likely to get more criticial fails; in a bankjob you may need to roll stealth FIVE times in total, but in a party of four that gives you a VERY high chance of critical fail.
    TLDR: One party role for Stealth, then each player adds modifiers. Consequences dependent on how many peeps fail.

  • @MalevolentDivinity
    @MalevolentDivinity 7 лет назад

    Imma be weird here and say that, were I to do it, I think I'd only roll stealth once.
    Take into accounts the enemy's perception skill and your stealth skill. In all situations, the one who's making the perception check has a bonus, and various entities would cause that bonus to shrink.
    All depending on which way they're looking.
    If you're trying to go in a direction they're not looking, standard might be, like, +10. Modifiers would be if you're walking on something that would cause noise, like gravel, or broken glass, or what have you, giving them a bigger bonus, or if you're going at half speed, giving them a smaller bonus.
    If you're trying to go in a direction they are looking, something more like +50. Bonus shrinks due to darkness, cover, what have you. Mayhaps make it so that there's a faintly visible shimmer so that they'll notice when you're invisible if they're looking hard enough. Should basically be impossible to sneak in front of someone if there's nothing impeding vision.
    Then, do a check.
    The perception check should win basically every time. The difference between the perception and stealth check, multiplied by five, is now the effective distance wherein the perceiver can detect the sneaker.
    ....
    In feet.

    The Adventuring Chapter in the phb has a chart for movement speeds, and it seems like you have to move at 2/3 of your normal speed (20ft for most people) to be able to use stealth.

    Super high dex.. stealth heavy build and crit agressive..lvl 5 and.. our campaign is 6 sessions in (4hrs each with the first 4 sessions with 4 players and the last 2 being 8 total players. We have only had 1 stealth opportunity.... as a group....a rouge. A pally. A sorc. 2 elementals one fire one water.. a 7ft orc barbarian and 2 archers.. the stealth area was against creatures when nearby they can sense you like a bat kinda thing.. honestly.. most of the time as a assassin stealth build.. I'm the one tanking.. making all of my advantage and crit attacks from stealth being useless. I even multi classes into lvl 1 warlock for ranged spells to keep myself light without crossbows and such weighing me down

I'm not too vulnerable either way, although if something does hit me it hits pretty hard since I'm only a level 2 at the moment. I need to go on some adventures personally with my DM to get that XP. It's a good thing we're best buds, otherwise, we would probably not be able to do that as often. She's cool with it and down for it, so I think I lucked out when we became friends.

    Stealth isn't as simplified as people think and that is a major problem of the PHB. Visual Stealth requires Full Cover or Heavy Concealment, even at dim light the character is automatically spotted, no checks required, the instant they step out of Cover/Concealment, regardless of turn.
