2012 World Series when we had Miggy and Prince hitting back to back was our best chance. Not having a bullpen throughout Cabrera's career here so far has been the real killer. We would have JV and Max throw practically no hitters through 7 innings in big games and we would still lose those games late.

A lot of these guys were flashes in the proverbial pan or had very up and down careers though. The only constants I see on this list are Pudge Rodriguez and Miguel Cabrera. Dontrelle Willis was supposed to be their ace and by the World Series he was barely being used. Beckett was a rookie. Amazing in the postseason but he turned out to be very up and down over the course of his career, makes me think we should have been able to get to him in game 6 because he wasn't that good with the Red Sox years later. Pavano was decent but showed his true mettle when they tried to make him a Yankee and he faked or exaggerated injuries the whole time.

What most amazes me about Miggy is the plate awareness he displays on the biggest stage at 20 years old, in his rookie year, against one of the best and most fearsome pitchers of all time. Clemens starts him off with the fastball at his head. Okay, whatever. It's initiation. Clemens comes back with a fastball up and away that Miggy just takes the biggest hack on! He's not scared one bit. If you pause at the right frame, you'll notice how late Miggy was, but how his bat plane was JUST underneath the ball's flight path (this is important). Then Clemens plays off that fastball with the splitter in the dirt that causes Miggy to swing out of his shoes!
It's now 1-2. Miggy knows with the swing he just took, he's probably getting another split in the dirt. He recognizes and spits on it. Never even flinched. The next pitch I believe is either a changeup or a really flat splitter running inside. Anyway, it doesn't have enough bite on it for Miggy to whiff on, but it's not really in a location that he can do damage on. He spoils it. Clemens comes back with virtually the same pitch (probably a little more over the plate) and Miggy is all over it! But he gets a little too excited and pulls it just foul.
That's 4 straight splitters/change-ups. Clemens hasn't shown the fastball in a while. He's not going to go up and in like on the first pitch because of count leverage. Why waste a perfectly good Rocket in a 2-2 count? Oh wait, he's still got that 1-0 high and away fastball in his toolbox! The same fastball that just overmatched the Rook. What could go wrong? Well, this time, the Rook not only times the exact same pitch, he swings his bat at JUST the right plane to be able to take this 94 MPH heater the other way into the right field seats. Rook: 1. Rocket: 0.

This is actually way more epic than it seems at face value. The confidence from both of these guys jumps off the screen. Clemens had a little too much faith in that fastball when it was abundantly clear Miggy was sitting on it. He was out in front of the two off speed pitches before it, yet still behind the fastball when it came....good stuff right here.
