What a fascinating episode. Thank you so much for focusing on samplers. I was never interested in stitching reproduction samplers until I started watching flosstube and seeing how much many really enjoyed stitching them. I began looking closer at them and realized that they are beautiful. I just started my first reproduction sampler last month on my birthday. It's the Dorothy Preston 1752 Sampler from Sampler and Antique Needlework, Vol. 1 book. It's gorgeous. Also, it's so mind-blowing to stitch something that was stitched by a 10-year-old girl 267 years ago.

Oh don’t feel bad about crying!! My daughter is 30 and I cry when I get off the phone with her! I love her so much😊...oh....what a lovely tribute to samplers !! I’m looking forward to this month and watching all of the pics on Instagram. I’m still plugging away on Elizabeth Sheffield.....but that hasn’t stopped me from starting 3 more samplers! Thanks so much for all the great info on samplers!

Those samplers are inspiring. I am also working on Miss Mary Anne Bourne but am wanting to work on Agnes Platt, I love the border and motifs. I do love houses, big red houses. Thank you for sharing another video with wonderful ideas. I have at least 2 Samplers that I will start in September! Also I have a wonderful son that reminds me of yours. He is living at home for now, going to school. He is such a wonderful helper as my hubby is disabled from a stroke, and I’m battling the evil cancer crap. Cross stitching is my stress release! Love it !

Hi, Theresa! My Mama's heart aches for you as your miss your boy ( and Peaches). I am joining you in Sampler September!! I am so excited.. I am not on Instagram ( probably one of the only people in AMerica without a smart phone :0 ) I am currently working on Sarah Braizear from Hands a cross the Sea and as I was watching you, I was stitching on your Ann Dale.. She is SO lovely. I converted the colors to match the ones on the front cover photo--- more rusty than rosy. I am having a blast.. Looking forward to seeing you again

Thank you for your video. Yes, Theresa I do watch your videos faithfully. I am just beginning to get into samplers. I am going to stitch with you in September your sampler, A Savior's Praise. This will be my first sampler i will be stitching. I am excited to get started.
i understand your pain of letting go of your children. It doesn't matter their age, it always hurts. I am a mom with 4 children which have left our home and was difficult for me to see them go.
    Have a good week stitching.

I will be stitching on an older sampler pattern by Sheepish Designs called The Garden Path. It was passed on to me from my mother in law's cross stitch stash. She actually had started stitching the design, and I will be completing it. Sampler September has given me the inspiration I need to get going on it.

As I am watching you and your asking if we watch every week, I am shaking my head yes. Like you can see me! I do watch everyone of your flosstube. I love the sampler Mary Clayton by Hands Across the Sea. There is something about it that just calls to me. My son move to Colorado about 11 years ago. He now has a family we try to travel there a few times a year and I cry every time I have to leave. So no matter how old they are they are still our children. ♥️

Wow-another mom here who shed buckets of tears these past two days. My youngest, now a college graduate, moved to follow his dreams which makes me absolutely thrilled! Trouble is that we live in Northern Virginia and he now resides in Los Angeles, California. That’s not exactly a nice day drive away. I just try to keep busy and remind myself that this is the journey for him that we always dreamed of. I, however, am lost in a sea of Kleenex all over my house. My poor nose is raw from blowing it so much. Stitching also helps as long as I keep Flosstube babbling in my ears. Currently, I am finishing up a sweet little sampler from an old magazine that I spruced up the colors on. I joined the “Sampler September” group and have spent the day picking out which samplers will find their way onto my hoop this month. Can’t wait to jump in! (And thanks for the super sale on repro samplers on your website! Looking forward to a date with Elizabeth Wood, 1822.)

I have so many samplers to stitch and so many started, I just need to finish them. Right now I’m stitching one in honor of my second grandchild Elias. For me. Then I will start one for my third grandson, Leland. Evan’s is already stitched and I started it all with one for Edith who passed away before she could be born. The Petit Mexican Sampler is also being stitched in honor of my friend Linda who passed away in April. It sounds morbid but it’s comforting and I enjoy looking at them. I understand about tears for your son. I have cried buckets when my daughter and son moved away. It sucks.

Hey Theresa I love seeing the samplers that you have done, are doing or have bought. Really didn't start that way but you're right they get in under your skin... And you just have to have a sampler in your hand. They are fun to do.

By the time my kids moved out, I was ready and then right after, my mom moved in with us for care. Have not gotten that empty nest yet. I don't think I've done a sampler ever, but I bet I have one in my stash. So many lovelies just waiting to be started. Love and kisses to the kitties.

I want to stitch the Three Things Sampler by Moira Blackburn. It will be my first. You hit the nail on the head when you described the evolution of my stitching. I’ve always loved the story of history. Samplers fit right into that love. In 2017, we were flooded by hurricane Harvey. My in-laws live just across the street and both houses took on almost 4 ft. Of water. As we removed all the things, I saw two samplers that were made by my mother in laws mother. She, my mother in law, is 86 years old now, so no telling how old the pieces are to date. I have been in the family for more than 20 years and I can’t tell you all the things I saw for the first time but those took my breath away. Just wanted to share. Hope you have a great week!

Changes regarding our children are so hard and I know you are proud and excited for your son but it is hard. So, cry! It is cleansing and good for the soul - as is stitching. Sampler September, a great idea! I am going to love what I am going to learn this month about antique samplers. I am going to work on Hands Across The Sea’s The Old Scot. There are SO many I would like to start that I keep a list on my iPhone but two at the top of the list are Modern Folk Embroidery Love and Unity and Forget Me Not.

You asked if we watch all your videos? I sure do, right from the get-go. Some I've watched twice so I could take notes, make a list of charts I want to stitch. I'm delighted to hear you'll be putting up a video every week in Sept. Yahoo. I'm approaching the finish line onCaroline Broomhead, 1838 by Plum Street. I'll be starting 3 new ones: A Savior's Praise by you know who, Esther Iddison, & Merrily, Merrily We Welcome Spring. That's the lineup so far.
I so enjoyed this latest video, the evolution of stitching, your insights into the world of designers and the challenges they face when they release their artwork. I never fail to learn something new from your videos, so I thank you for sharing all your knowledge, it's much appreciated.
Having our kids leave home and start their adult journey is so hard but it will get easier. Promise.

I love the idea of Sampler September! I grew up in New England, surrounded by colonial architecture and plenty of samplers. I stitched my first in about 1980. The pattern, linen and silks came from a catalogue by The Scarlett Letter. Finding sampler patterns wasn’t easy in those days! My next sampler will likely be Elizabeth Furniss by Hands Across The Sea. If I can find linen I like. I’ve purchased 3 different linens for it...and none of them are blowing my skirt up.

I stitched a smaller from Just Cross Stitch magazine and fell in love with samplers. I have Our Father from Stoney Creek but have to make sure I have fabric big enough for it. Not supper wide, just long. There hasn't been a smaller I've seen that didn't have me itching to stitch it. They have swiftly become some of my favorites.

Thanks for the sampler show! I have become more interested in them of late. I even took a 4+ hour trip to Williamsport, PA a few weekends ago to see a sampler exhibit put on by the Thomas T. Taber Museum. They were owned by the museum director (we were fortunate enough to meet and chat with him,) and a few of his friends. 79 in all, a few from Europe, but most from the eastern US. It was wonderful! I am currently stitching “Cherry Hollow Farm” by Stacy Nash, and I will start in September “A Saviour’s Praise” by you-know-who. Best of luck to your son on his new adventure!😻

Hi Theresa, I have been stitching for 50 years but have never stitched a sampler. Your description of progressing thru stitching styles fits me perfectly. I love the cat and the different colors in the alphabet. Thanks

Hi, Theresa! I'll be stitching along with you this month. I generally stitch samplers more than anything else, and have even been fortunate enough to buy a couple of antiques to display in my home. For September, I've set stitching goals for some of my reproduction wips. And since I'm a September baby, I've also started a new sampler, Heaven Above by Midsummer Night Designs, that will serve as a remembrance piece for some family members that have passed on. I hope you have a great week!

Sampler September, what a great idea. I just started my first samplers: Long Dog's Bloo Boo Kay that I am using DMC variegated 4504 thread and Carriage House Samplings Northern Exposure. Loving them both. Have to admit the night I dropped my son off at college and drove his car home - I slept in his car that night and cried.

So happy to see a new flosstube from you so soon. I have the Lucy Snushall chart. I love the quote on it. I have a terrible time choosing fabric and threads because it is so hard to tell colors, texture, drape, etc. online and I do not have a local needlework shop. I got to visit The Attic last March and Lucy jumped out at me, but I didn’t have the presence of mind (or budget) at the time to choose fabric and fibers. Just started using a bit of silk (and LOVE it), but can be sooo pricey to complete a whole project using same. Many of the quotes on samplers make me cringe and not a fan of Adam and Eve, but I’ve seen many a sampler without- so many to choose from (or from which to choose). Graham is a doll. Best of luck to him on his new adventures! Good to see you, Sally in Northern California 😁

Working on so many samplers, I need to focus and get some finishes before starting new ones. My oldest sampler wip is Anniversaries of the Heart. I started it in 2011. All of the stitching is done, but I have put off doing the over one personalization. That is the only thing keeping this piece from being a finish. I have been telling myself that I need to just set aside some time dedicated to tackling this over one. So, you have declared this Sampler September, and essentially handed me that time on a silver platter. Thanks, Theresa! PS, the samplers in the slide show are to due for! PSS, I have been sad as well, my son stayed at home after high school, and attended the local community college, got his Associates degree, and transferred to my alma mater, Virginia Tech. We moved him a week ago, and not having him home is very hard, lots of crying here in Virginia, as well.

I will stitch samplers with you all month and all year long. The book gorgeous. My WIPs are Marjorie Massey “Style & Quaker, Modern Folk Design “Jane Austen Sampler” , Examplar Dames “Black Dahlia” , Scarlet House “A Perfect World”, Blackbird “Eleanor Rigby” in blacks and greys , Courtney Collection “Garden Faire” and Samplers Not Forgotten “English Garden”. I have joined the Country Sampler schoolgirl sampler club and am stitching yours through them. I also just ordered a couple through your site. I tend to stitch seasonal items for my home but realized recently that I have had a totally white on white sampler by Eileen Bennet on my wall for decades. I had taken the class with her at a Spirit of Crossstitch Festival class back in the 1990s. You are right-it is a relief to stitch these compared to hardanger and fancy stitches all over. My kids live in my city and I still feel like crying when they leave-not that I want them living with me either!! 😂 I think living a few houses down the street would be perfect!! I came into reproduction samplers just along the lines you said: I was into TW, Miras, florals, etc running right past the repros at the time (the 80s) until I finally twigged onto them via an Eileen Bennett piece published in JCS 89-90 (?) in 6 installments. Specialty stitches had a lot to do with it. I wanted more than Xs and yes, I wanted to be more involved with heritage pieces and a connection with history, women's history. AND! I totally appreciate your encouragement about changing things up on repros. Despite my best intentions all of my repros over the decades have all been adapted for 1 reason or another. So many decades later I just accept that it is 1 of my genetic traits despite yet another generation of sampler police arising in places. I started an instagram account for posting my work, incl. sampler sept, of course.

I started stitching Three Lilies by La D Da this weekend, which I just picked up from kittenstitcher. com. I am also stitching Stacy Nash's Cherry Hollow Farm Sampler. Kind of new to all of this and starting with the smaller pieces. Spanish Mystery Sampler is calling my name now! Maybe I will pick it up with the 20% discount. I can empathize with those tears! I recently was able to find the Mary Pets Sampler from Queenstown Samplers. I love the story behind the samplers stitched at The Oblate Sisters of Providence School for Girls. This school has the largest repository of samplers stitched by black school children and the samplers were used to teach the children their alphabet and how to read. Mary Pets sampler is one reproduction sampler stitched by one of these schoolgirls. This story was shared with me by a fellow retreat attendee. We were discussing samplers and I said I was not into them and didn't get the appeal. They told me of the history of samplers and told me about this particular story and I finally have one of them in my possession. I also have a new found appreciation of samplers, understanding that most of the motifs in historical samplers represent something historically. I'm currently stitching on the Eliza Bell Cox sampler from Hands Across the Sea. Loved this video...so informative!!! And best wishes to your son on his next adventure! :-) Thanks! Latisha

Hey Theresa! For Sampler September, I started the S. Ward kit which I purchased last September from you and I am loving it! Even though I have been stitching for over 30 years, mostly samplers, I would like to try a Hands Across the Sea pattern but they look a bit complicated with specialty stitches and stitched on 40 count or higher. They intimidate me since I can only see 32 count with magnification and bifocals! But perhaps you could recommend one to me. My favorite designs are by Blackbird which I have done over many years. I love your videos and I have watched them all, sometimes twice ! Thank you for the sampler viewing at the end of this video, along with the beautiful classical music. Thank you so much! xo

I’m new to cross stitch but love it and so thankful to have found your channel. I’m a quilter. I just finished “The Bookshelf” for my daughter in law- not sure if that qualifies as a sampler but it’s a starting point. Going to your shop now to look around. Also we raised four sons and I cried each time they left so let yourself cry as much as you need to! Thanks for all you do!

Those samplers in that slide show were amazing 😍! My first samplers were Shepherds Bush and they gave me a lot of confidence in executing specialty stitches. I loved how quickly they stitched up too. I adore the Bristol samplers, probably because I love alphabets. (That must be the teacher in me.)

Hi Teresa, I have had a love of samplers since I first started counted cross stitch in the eighties. I was especially drawn to reproduction samplers as the years past. The history of the girls who stitched the samplers is so interesting to me. These days we are so lucky to have so many lovely samplers to choose from and I decided to start Anna Grator by The Scarlett House as my first September Sampler.

Don't cry about your son going off to Denver! My son left PA about 5 years ago to move to Denver. Although I was very sad to see him go, he absolutely loves it! I have a feeling Harrison will make his way in the world (or at least in Colorado!) and do just fine. Even though I miss my son, I know he's happy there. And what more could a mom want?

A couple weeks ago, I purchased Sara Braizear and Harriet Salt, both Hands Across the Sea designs and am reading through the charts now as I decide what materials to use (DMC or silk threads) and if I wish to make any changes (fun to personalized them as times). I also just purchase a Long Dog sampler called The Templar's Prophesy and am in the process of reading through the chart and deciding the color fabric and thread to use (might do a blended thread on it for extra fun).
This was a super video. I'm falling ever more in love with samplers. They are such a reflection of their era. Maybe it time to design one to display current sensibilities.

I love your Sampler Sept idea! I fell into love with samplers only a couple of years ago and love seeing everyone’s work. There are so many of them! I’m going to pick up Rachel Howell again. Started awhile ago, then put it down for a change. Good luck to Harrison. He’s lucky to have you and your family as a strong base - that won’t change, wherever he is!

Ah, nice picture of your son. What a kind face, too, I bet he’ll be a wonderful counselor! I plan on starting your Hannah Carter Sampler. There’s something about it’s simple design that appeals to me and the fact that there’s a Christmas tree on it, too-got to love that! I just found my fabric for it, now to invest in the silks!

I love all the samplers you have featured at the end of this video. I love all your videos. I think I have seen them ALL. I just finished stitching the Sarah Brazier sampler by HATS and am presently stitching Miss Mary Ann Bournes by HATS and Jane Atkinson by The Scarlet Letter. I'm sorry that you are sad about your son moving away. I know how it feels. I also cried every time any of my children left for college and each time thereafter when they departed following their home visits.

I LOVE the samplers you showed at the end of the video... the one with the guy in then tent and the camels... fantastic... reminds me of my deceased FIL who was part of an expedition that charted routes in the Gobi desert... anyway... I LOVE samplers... I use to "limit" myself to only samplers with and alphabet and a house... did a lot of Ewe & Eye and Blackbird Designs, but I've strayed in the last year to more seasonal "decorating" pieces. You've inspired me to spend some time on Sunday working on a sampler ... I 've just barely started "Oh Joyous Day" by Blackbird Designs and I think I'll give it some attention ...Thanks again for another great video and I hope each day gets a little bit better ... I don't care how old they are they are still our babies and I remember crying my eyes out when my older son left for college... hugs.

Hi Theresa, it was so good to see you today!! I had forgotten that you said you were going to be coming around more often for Sampler September. I love it!! I am so sorry you are having the empty-nest blues. Please feel free to tell Graham that your stitchy friends say he should call/text often to help you slowly get used to this new life-change., He's a great guy, I'm sure he will be keeping in touch as much as his schedule will allow! I've been through the empty nest myself and felt that hole that develops inside. I'm not an emotional person at all and I never thought it would bother me in the least, but it took me a couple of weeks to get past it. Oh, and I might add here that my daughter had married and moved a whole two miles down the road at the time! Ha!!! Yep, a whole two miles!! ;-) It's obviously a motherly thing! I'm praying for you!! So I decided to bring out an old sampler that I started way back in the eighties and never finished. It is The Pomegranate Sampler by Darlene O'Steen of Needle's Prayse. I had the border almost finished, but that was all. This will be my project this month. I have a ton more I want to do, but I have to save time to get projects for birthdays and holidays completed. Unfortunately, no one in my family likes samplers! The nerve!!! ;-) See you in a week!

So happy you decided to do sampler September I think it’ll be a great way to hopefully get everyone involved in stitching and learning more about samplers including me! Anyway idk if it will be the only one I start or if I will start a couple, but today I started red deer sampler by Gigi R. Thank you for taking time to make videos and share! Happy stitching!

Hi there 👋. I am new to your Flosstube. Several of the other Flosstubers that I watch often mention you, so I thought I would check you out. Glad I did!!! You won my heart with Samplers. When you were describing the process of getting to samplers is EXACTLY how I arrived at samplers. I actually just started my first sampler about 3 weeks ago because I love the colors, it looks simple (which is refreshing) and I love the verse on it. It has on it the verse I come to frequently when I have something going on in my life. The Sampler is “Time and Season” by Moira Blackburn. I am loving stitching this project.

Love your idea of #samplerseptember2019. I started your reproduction, Sarah Woodham 1770, back when you released it ten years ago. All I have left is half of the over-one writing. I guess I got tired of the over-one stitching 🤪. I plan on finishing it FINALLY this September. Thank you for your inspiration. Another fun and informative video. See you at Galleria. 👍❤️

My heart hurts for you missing your son. Change is very hard. I cried every night when my oldest was a senior in high school. Just knowing change was coming...ugh, it was hard. I was NOT a good empty nester. (Still struggle with it. What can I say, I adore and love my children.)
Samplers are timeless and beautiful. Thanks for a great video!!!

What a fantastic video! I think you are right in saying that most Sampler stitchers come to love them after learning about them first. I have always loved samplers and have a few books of sampler charts from way back in the 80's but I guess I never felt that I could do one. Now I'm loving them. I'm presently finishing Quaker Bluebird Sampler by Willow Hill Samplings which I love. I have purchased charts for several HATS samplers, including Sarah Braizear 1829 and Elizabeth Atkinson 1829, but I truly love more primitive samplers so I'm planning to "age" them with thread colors and fabric. I bought the chart for Rhapsody in Blue by Fouroaks designs about 6 years ago in honor of my favorite aunt, with whom I shared a love of blue and white china. I am still searching for just the right fabric and thread to start that one. I have also started On Prudence by Plum Street which is a modern sampler but with a great message. There are so many I want to buy and I thank you for the generous offer of 20% off. Now to just decide which one.....

I've just ordered Harriet Salt from HATS, a Bristol orphanage sampler. Can't see to stitch such a big sampler on 40 count without migraines so I plan to stitch it on 32 or even 28 which would be close to a square yard in size and then finish it as a quilted wall hanging.

Love the idea of Sampler September! I had the same idea and yesterday (September 1) I started Janet Reid 1835 Sampler, using wool. So far, I'm loving the wool fibers and how nicely the stitches lay on the linen. I've placed an order from your site for Lucy Snushall from Samplers Remembered. It's been on my wish list for a while, so I was thrilled to hear you had a sale going. Hope to see you at Galleria this month, but will keep watching your weekly videos in the meantime!

Oh I love this Teresa!!! You are so inspiring. I’m going to start stitching “The Christmas Garden” by Blackbird Designs. It’s been kitted up for two years...time to get stitching! It’s hard when your children start to leave... when my first four left ( they were all in their late 20’s ), it was time-😊), but when my youngest son left & moved to SC, I was heartbroken...hang in there....it does get a little easier.

I love the idea of Sampler September! I'm one of those people that never cared for samplers but since becoming addicted to samplers I now want to stitch them all! I'm stitching Vintage Lace right now by Rosewood Manor but I own a couple Hands Across the Sea Sampler patterns that I would like to start soon. I also just bought All Creatures Great and Small, I love it. Thank you for your generosity.

When I saw your sons pic I started crying. Have retired and will be moving to a state that is kinder to retirees. It is closer to one son but means moving away from the other and the thought is tearing at me! Sending a hug! I loved the big tree Sampler, ( parade of sampler pics)but will not call, write, or email cause I was paying attention when you told not to call write or email! I do love samplers and liked Deventer Duo, so going to your site to look at it again! That book is such a generous giveaway! Speaking of book, my comment is becoming one! Enjoyed your video! 💕

Such a great/fun video! I’m so glad you’re willing to go to the effort to make your videos. They are all so very enjoyable to watch! Your description of how some stitchers take a while to warm up to samplers was totally me. I found a pattern for a reproduction sampler (Eliza Guy) for 50 cents at my library book sale and decided it was a good first reproduction for me to try out. It even had a few different specialty stitches. I absolutely loved stitching it and it now hangs proudly on my wall. Currently I’m working on Elizabeth Pratt by R & R which I saw on Saltbox Stitcher’s flosstube, just 2 colors, red and blue. I’ll stitch on it for Sampler September. Thank you for offering such a generous book to your subscribers.
Can totally relate to letting go of your son. The last of my 4 sons has been out of the house now for about 6 years. Our parenting goal is to raise strong, independent gentlemen that want to be on their own to build their own life. Succeeding at that goal means pain in watching them go. Well done, mom.
Love, a fellow stitching mom of sons.

My son just graduated high school and doesn’t know what direction he wants to take, ugh.
