So my husband walked in and sat down to watch this with me (streaming on the tv) and says about the Birkin “oh that’s a pretty plant,” and then on the Godzilla “oh that’s cool.”
So I filled him in, “babe, it’s an ugly plant video.”
He thought it was hilarious. 😂

I really don't get why Alocasia Jacklyn is on the list tbh 😂 but to each their own. I've added a baby Jacklyn to my collection maybe 1-2 months ago. I really love it. The stems look very mushroom-y to me and the shape of the leaves is so unique. It opened its first true-to-form leaf about 2 weeks ago and it's currently unfurling the second, the ones it had when it arrived are still baby leaves. Is it a bit weird? Yea. Okay, a lot. The texture is really odd. But it's lovely in its own way. I have a few plants I got just because of how odd and out-of-this-world they are, and I know this one would fit, but no, I got the Jacklyn because I saw pictures and I fell in love ❤
EDIT: I sent this vid to a friend who is not into plants. For Mint Adansonii he said "it looks zombie" and I can't unsee it now 😂😂😂

I actually think the Philo Birkin looks very striking! Those stripes are so clear and clean along the leaves. I only just got one a few months ago and it looks so nice on my kitchen table. Now that I look at it closely, the bottom leaves may be starting to fade. I actually had the opposite issue as on of the plants in the pot kept growing too much variagation. I had to cut it several times. The new leaves are still gorgeous, the growth pattern is very compact and over all the plant looks still amazing.

    -Alocasia macrorrhiza 'Stingray' (kinda awkward)
-Pilea peperomioides 'Mojito' (I try not to introduce any viruses into my plant collection and this plant is just rustling my jimmies)
    -Philodendron Birkin when it's unhappy
-your aunt's crusty old Phalaenopsis that just survived the last decade on a table
-that grey, dusty "public office" Aglaonema
Edit: The last two obviously haven't been rare for decades.

    Kayleeeeeeeeee, pleaseeee...😭The secret to Paraiso... It's *L I G H T* -- not heat!
When people with as big a following as yours, spread that bunk temperature theory, you set folks up for *FAILURE* (especially the less-experienced portions of the community, who are still trying to build a knowledge base and practical understanding, and who look to your word as gospel guidance) which means every time you say this, you're proliferating frustrations and reinforcing needless resentment for what is actually a *super* easy plant... When it can just get what it needs... (Which just so happens to be *LOTS* of light!🌞)
Edit: Now... As far as it being an "ugly" plant, that's fine -- I totally respect y'all's opinions... But *at least* give folks the proper info to grow the poor plant, so it can be judged it at its best!!! 😂

The weirdest-looking & also TEXTURALLY-odd (i.e., “nature doing the most”) plants, in my eyes, include the aforementioned ‘Black Cardinal’, because it’s no longer black! It’s not even pink either. It is that dishwater swirled effect. Looks a bit like it’s struggling to find the right lighting, feeding, and overall it appears as a “lost” plant. Like it would be at-risk of dying if I bought one. I also find anthuriums, especially velvet leaves ones, that are marbled to be scary looking at times. It just doesn’t work to me… as well as Alocasias ‘Frydek’, ‘Polly’, both just don’t work with that marbled variegation. Velvet marble is overkill I think. I’m not spending hundreds on something like that, as I see on Etsy! Also there are numerous cultivars available of _Colocasia esculenta_ (edible taro root) which also look rather bizarre variegated. As you said about Philo. ‘Paraíso Verde’ being flaccid, Taro plants are very loose and floppy, despite their massive size potential, and they blow around in the breeze a lot. They’re also soft, and soft leaves to me don’t work with variegation. It’s similar to the velvety thing. I do love the _Colocasia_ ‘Mojito’, on the other hand.
Variegated Calla “lily” (aka _Zantedeschia_ I think) aren’t the most common things, but you’d expect them to be stunning… nope, they’re bizarre too. Lol. The commonly sold cultivars with spotted or “starry” leaves are nice, especially with darker purple or maroon flowers, but if the variegation is marbled… not so much. Good thing they’re an anomaly. I also find philodendrons ‘Caramel Marble’, ‘Jungle Boogie’, _P. billietiae_ and _atabapoense_ to be too much when variegated. But ironically I do like Alocasia ‘Jaclyn’, both in shape and color. _A. zebrina_ is cute, too. And there’s more! I personally find variegated fiddle leaf fig to be overkill. And variegated whale fin snake plant. A plant that’s already uniquely colored, has striping, edging, spots, and now variegated is too much… and too expensive. For what it is. Lol.

I noticed Kaylee say something really stupid in this video 19:00. This surprised me. She is usually much smarter than this. She said no plant can completely new, they are all "hundreds of years old".
No Kaylee, some ciltivars can be literally less than a year old. They are the result of random gene mutations and such mutations are happening all the time and always will. Epipremnum aureum Gold must be the most common house plant in the world today, and the yellow variegation (and hardiness) that made it so common was unknown until 1960!
And there are thousands of such examples. Species can be very old of course, but NOT all ciltivars.

I’m always lost for words. I personally love the normal black cardinal for his dark leafs. WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU MAKE THEM DIRTY GREEN WITH DIARRHEA BROWN. Just no.
Splashes if orange. Ok. Maybe a nice bright red, ok. But no. It just looks like you’ve left it out for too long on the sun.

One that I really dislike and if it was given to me, I would immediately pass it on is the P. Orange Princess, yuck. And I would never purchase the A. Jacklyn and the P. Birken. I agree with everything on your list being ugly/not for me.

I don't really like the S. Strawberry Ice at all - to me it looks like somebody projectilve vomited strawberries and cream on the leaves. LOL!!
I do like the Jacklyn, though. And I like the Birkin as well, personally.

I have a Strawberrry Ice 😂🍓 I did pay a fair whack for it and definitely won't make the investment back, but I do kinda love it all the same, when it puts out growth with really high variegation I love the cream and pink. But I get the dislike for the darker leaves it can look muddy.

LOL I love my Paraiso Verde -- but I had to park it directly under a grow light to get the variegation back (and I don't disagree with a single thing you say about it, either!)
I don't quite love my Birkin, but I don't hate it, either. It's almost the opposite of the Paraiso Verde, too much light and the leaves turn all white and die and it just gets ugly fast. I've had to chop off all the top twice because it was all white and sickly. I picked a plant (from the garden center) that was one Birkin and a pair of Congo Reds in the same pot. Reds are enormous and healthy and look so much better than the Birkin ever will.

Also I find Syngoniums quite ugly in generall. I know they have a lot of fans, but there is something about the way they look and grow like that I just can't get behind

I got the birken in 2020 I think and I think I spent mayyybbbeee $20. I wouldn't have spent much more than that. It's still thriving. The older leaves do fade a bit with the striping. I don't know. I wouldn't buy it again, but I don't hate it.

Hoya undulata Red, maybe it’s too OBVIOUS lol it looks like a dead plant with ash sprinkled on it. I’d still add it to my collection because of just how unique it is. Also Hoya umbricata.

To each her own. It's awesome that there are so many varieties of plants so people can get what speaks to them.
IMO, the Birkin depends on the variegation. I love mine, but it's quite light colored. I love my Jacklyn and Godzilla. I think my Brandi is stunning. Strawberry Ice is on my wishlist. I love the mix of colors.

I think, scientifically, we are attracted to symmetry. The farther we get from that, the more ugly they are, like the Adansonii Mint and the Jacklyn. I would add Alocasia Flying Squid, I literally don't get the draw. And the "attitude " of plants make them ugly to me, the more dramatic and needy, the less I like it.

Birkins give me house that’s been staged for listing pictures vibes. If that makes sense? I’ve also never understood the hype around strawberry shake philos because they look gross to me. If you do another, I think some of the variegated alocasia should be on the list. When you have to post in a plant group asking if it’s unwell or sport var. that says a lot imo.😅
