I wore my humongous fro to go grocery shopping one day and I had a friend with me who had a short weave hairstyle in her hair. She told me I embarrassed her by walking out of my house like that lol. It was picked out clean and everything but it was still an "embarrassment" to her. She said people kept staring but what she didn't hear were the people's comments when they said WOW your hair is beautiful. I love my natural fluffy hair I don't understand why some women hide theirs underneath all that mess it damages your hair too. I make my own products and my hair responds well to it. I managed to grow my hair from my neck to almost the middle of my back in one year from the organic hair butter and creams I made. We don't need weaves to grow our hair or to keep it protected.

@ashleytyler1386 Hi Ashley. Please tell me how you made your hair butter. What other products did you make to contribute to your hair growth? How do your wear and maintain your hair? Thank you in advance.

@NubianQueen68 Now my method may not work for everyone but I use LOTS and lots of oils, raw Shea butter, and herbs. Rice water and chebe conditioning treatments (only when I wash my hair) I usually wear my hair in plaits and I cover it. I don't wear my hair loose when it's too hot or too cold and I use a heat protector when I do or lots of moisturizers like leave-in conditioners and olive oil or castor oil. Tbh, I think leaving it alone is what helps it grow. I don't put weave in it often and if I do it's once a year. I don't straighten it because I'm far too lazy to sit there for hours just for it to puff back up in minutes 😆😆. I don't over or under-wash it just once a month and I'm super careful when it comes to combing through it. Oh and when I'm not wearing the chunky plaits I do Updos that don't create much tension. It sounds like a lot but me describing it sounds way more stressful than it is 😄😄. I wish I could connect with you another way I'd send you video on how to make some.

I do wash and go’s sometimes because I like my curls and I diffuse it so it doesn’t stay wet. I have what I think they call “3c & 4A” hair so it is pretty manageable. However, i still have to freshen it up or run my hands or a denman brush through it with a refresher mid week, if not it will tangle by the next wash day and is a b*tch to detangle, in turn causing stress and breakage.

In the end, people have to do what works for them. I've been doing coils for 3 years. I wash my hair every 7-10 days religiously with products i've investigated. I do a deep conditioner every week. I go to my stylist every 8 weeks, and my ends still look good. Now that my hair has grown and does get tangled, I switched to wash and go's. My hair is growing. I like doing wash and go’s for me because I’ve finally found products that soften my hair, give good hold, shine, no tangles, and length retention. It took years for me to figure it out. I don’t do twist outs because I hate those heavy creams and butters in my hair. (Ive tried mousse but it’s terrible for a twist out for me.) My hair strands are fine, those heavy products break me out, and provides no hold for me. I live in a humid state and that style typically lasts 2 days max until it’s a fro. Now I wouldn’t have a problem with wearing a fro, except my hair is see through! There are women like me who have no issue with their texture, but hair strands and density. My hair looks fuller with the products I use for a wash and go, and I don’t like twist/braid styles on me simply because my hair isn’t thick.

Sometimes I’ll style with accent braids in on the front and connect it to a ponytail. Butters and cremes, and soufflés and milks are my favorites and my hair cannot thrive without them. We need to stop trying to go against what our hair naturally does and work with what it naturally does. Our hair is different and we need to accept it. I think a lot of ppl avoid the moisture because their hair frizzes up and sticks out of the straight braiding hair. The kinky hair is much more light weight and I can squeeze in moisture easier. Also I only do twist now since they’re less tension and easier to moisturize.
Also it matches my texture so the frizz doesn’t bother me nearly as much. My problem was I was wearing my hair by itself for so long I got tired of it looking the same length in plaits/twists thanks to shrinkage

Great advice. I did wash and gos for years and no growth. A lot of breakage. My hair akways grew with braiding my own hair without extensions and two strand twists. Also, when I see Black women with veey long hair in oerson or RUclips, all of them where their own hair in two strand twists or their own hair is braided. Also, I hydrate and lightly moisture my hair frequently through the week.

You are dropping bombs all over the place. You are helping me understand why I struggle with dryness at some points.
Also, many stylists ask for clients to blow dry their hair before coming to get it styled. I on the other hand, when I do my hair, I do it without blow drying it beforehand and that was how hairdressers did it when I was younger too. I also hate gel and mousse irritates my skin which is why I often prefer just doing it myself. I didn’t realise mousse could irritate the skin until you mentioned it here.
I wear my hair in an Afro one week in every 4 months or so and that’s when I get the most tangles, dryness and brittle ends. It means I need to trim more often than when I leave it in single plaits.
Thank you for making things make so much sense.

My hair thrived on WNG..my hair was tailbone straight 2x and thats blowout bcus I wasn't putting high heat on my hair and rarely blew out or trimmed. When i decided i could switch up is where i went wrong. Aka doing to much😢
My WNG i didn't touch much and i used grease or oil with the gel bcus i hated that hard feeling so it stayed moisturized. I wanted my hair straight and got heat damage had to cut 60% of my hair😢 i got it back but i stopped doing WNG after i got permanently injured. I recently had to cut my thinning off so im starting over again. Like Narada said, 2strand twists are magic. They will grow your hair quickly, well it will appear quick.

Wow I intuitively knew that twist outs and wash and gos as well as wearing my hair out in an Afro would be stressing my hair. I would only style my hair in that manner for big upcoming events lol. And the detangling once wash day was on😩 yeah, twists are my every day go to. But sometimes I also open my two strand twists and leave the two strands out without separating them. That makes it so much easier for me to wash and retwist.

1:08:20 oh humectants are hydrators? I thought they are moisturizing since they are usually found in products marketed as moisturizers, yet absent in many pure leave in conditioners.
But marketing can be deceiving too i guess. Comapnies really do add to this natural hair confusion 🙃
To add, I also find that leave ins can affect/soften the hold of gels. This is why BGC says they arent necessary and classify it as a "no hold styler"

My hair doesn't even like cornrows in general so it was a fail from the start. And I didn't even wear them more than 2 weeks, and sprayed with water and leave in 🤣🤣

I think the one thing that Anthony Dickey doesn't make clear is that he doesn't recommend WNGs for super tightly coiled hair every single day. A month of his routine would be...a week of WNGs for max hydration, then blow it out with leave-in. Then 7-10 days of a low manipulation style like flat twist, two strand twist, etc. on straightened hair, then 7-10 days of a twist out, braid out, etc. And then back to WnGs. So its a mix of remoisturing the hair with intense hydration, being very gentle with finger detangling and using a lot of conditioner for slip. Then 14-20 days of low tension, low manipulation styles with the hair in a stretched state to avoid a lot of tangling, and then back to WnGs. So its not that different than the AHG method. Right now Im trying Dickey's method because its helping learn what works best for my very fine 4a/b strands. Ive moved to WnGs to 3x during the moisturizing week to cut down on manipulation

I personally wouldn’t trim that frequently. Many stylists LOVE to cut cut cut. They could possibly be cutting off more than you actually need to. Many stylists don’t look close at the ends of your hair to observe actual splits. They end up trimming the hair that just snapped off and grew back (and is still growing) that is shorter than the strands that didn’t snap and grow back. He talks about the preference for uniformity over simply leaving unlined up strands. Of course, each strand grows at a different rate, wane at a glance can be mistaken for split ends.

I sprayed water daily b/c they were BOHO braids. Babyyyyyy when I took those braids out the 3rd time my hair was literally snapping where the healthy hair & damaged hair met!! There was a harsh line of demarcation. I literally couldn’t take it so I BIG CHOPPED!!! I have about 3 inches of HEALTHY hair now. 😂 I’m gonna wear my hair & I’ll see you in 6 months to assess. Love youuuuuuuu ❤

It feels like there’s always a bunch of videos about new things we can’t do. I appreciate the advice and knowledge but at this point I’m so discouraged that I’d rather just have short-medium hair and do what I actually want with it

Did you watch the video? I actually started many times that you can and works so what you want to do with your hair. You just need to be educated and knowledgeable about what you are doing so that you know how it's affecting your hair. I think you are listening in frustration and not listening to learn and be equipped to move forward with your hair. You are probably also getting conflicting hair information from other people so you are thing to be overwhelmed with trying to decipher Good information from bad information.

I use water and natural oils and put my hair in a high ponytail or bun and my hair is past my waist. No wash N Go for me because my hair tangles bad when I tried WNG. I shampoo and deep condition every 2 weeks then up in a bun. I wear it down on special occasions or for professional photos etc.

Thank you so much, for all your information, I really think this information is so valuable, it helped
Me, I have been natural for so long over 10years, my hair, is doing pretty good, I don’t do a whole lot of manipulation either, but not walking around with my hair all over my head
Thank you so much, be blessed❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Twisting and braiding tangles my hair.

I would love to come for an appointment and assessment. I have a positive, curly stylist story. And i think my hair is relatively healthy after wearing it in a wash n go state.

He spoke the truth about the hairbraiding with "jam," mousse, etc. The techniques are terrible for natural hair.

Lanolin in hair grease has a comedogenic rating of 4. I have acne prone skin so I get break outs from using it. Instead I use dermatological grade liquid mineral oil or silicone serum that have comedogenic ratings of 0-2 to moisturise my hair.

I was a hard core wash and go-er. Recently I decided to do a press and curl and wow - the amount of split ends was crazy and unknown when my hair was curly. I’ve been wearing my hair straight for almost two months. I did do the no oils and no butters regimen and omg I believe most of my damage was from it. I think the wash and go hairstyle is fine, but my gels (wetline) I think damaged my hair in addition to maybe henna. My goal is to be straight natural (no damage) cause the method I use. My hair reverts no issues. Trying this method for the winter to grow out this damage. Cut again next season all this damage. Then I will try again with more natural gels and usage of oils again.

I can definitely attest to this. I do my boyfriend’s hair in some plaits or two strand twists with some cream and grease and he definitely retains more length than me. I’m a wng /slick back bun girlie

You are the truth. Everything you have said about wash and go's I have experienced. Yes I love how my hair looks but the damage to my hair was alot. I took your advice and got a haircut, did K18 and keep my hair in twist styles with grease and water. When I took my hair down for wash day, my hair was so moisturized. Thank you

Thanks for speaking the truth about many of us just not liking the way our hair is or looks completely natural. I’ll never understand why so many BW are choosing politics over truth but we cannot began to resolve what we refuse to address 💯
Also thx for explaining the phenomenon of wash and go’s on different hair lengths. When my hair length was between my shoulder blades, everything was fine until the undoing of this style where any type of detangling was plain dangerous (loss quite a bit of hair). I’ve since cut about 80% of my length off and the same exact style using the same exact products and method on my short hair. I experience no breakage, excessive tangling, or drying whatsoever. Took me a while to figure out what was so different but your explanation reinforces what I’ve discovered. Thanks for the Q&A.
