  • Sligo Style showcases the breathtaking musicianship, skill and virtuosity of four of Sligo’s finest traditional musicians - Declan Folan, Philip Duffy, Oisin MacDiarmada and Seamie O’Dowd - as they give Waterboys fiddler, Steve Wickham, a master class in the subtleties and unique beauty of the Sligo Style of traditional fiddle playing.
The Sligo Style of fiddling is renowned in traditional music circles and represents a unique cultural phenomenon which was exported to the US by a handful of local men, whose subsequent recordings were to have an enduring legacy in the way the fiddle has been played since.
Produced as a series of fiddle master-classes by the Creative team of Ocean Media, a subsidiary of Ocean FM, with funding from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

Such a pity there were never any recordings of Johnny Gorman--a flute player from Sligo. His Ma went out with Michael Coleman before he emigrated and he had such a beautiful style. It was full of life and so natural--he said he played the flute in the same way as someone might didle. He had lots of free spaces and so much energy. I always think of him when I think of Sligo style.

One thing I've noticed is the stillness in the body of most traditional flddle players, all the movement goes into the playing, whereas Wickham moves about a lot.

Martin Hayes would move more and plays very well.......I think its more about 'control' and building in an effortlessness rather than a panicked 'edge of disaster' feeling with less fine players.

Oisin is very economical with his bow and I note he is classically trained too from the straightness of his violin hand.

There wouldn't be the same tradition with guitar but that would be really interesting. You could definitely do this with the flute though
